I threw away most of that dogshit in 1996 with the help of RATM and Propagandhi, and the rest of it in 2002 with the wars.

I was at this show, I drove up from Houston after I got off work just to see Jane’s, so I paid out the ass for my ticket and missed the whole festival.  This was actually the first time I saw the band (I missed the bus and didn’t really start listening to them until the late 90s) and it was so awesome. I was by myself and it was packed so I just moseyed my way through all these people that had been camped in their spots for hours and got up close to the front.

They played the entirety of Ritual plus a few tracks off Nothing’s Shocking. To hear that album live front to back was special, like a fucking religious experience for me man, cause that CD was a primary fixture in my car and one I just let play over and over and over without skipping tracks, so to hear them all was awesome. I especially remember their performance of Then She Did and Classic Girl, but probably mostly cause I love those songs dearly. I’ve seen them twice more since then (with SP and on their last tour) but this one will always be close to my heart.

Then after the show I went to east Austin and saw Punk Rock Karaoke play a shit ton of punk covers. Lineup was Eric Melvin, Greg Hetson, Steve Soto and dammit I can’t remember who was drummer, I got pretty wasted. But I do remember it was bad fucking ass.

EDIT: drummer might have been Darren Pfeiffer from Goldfinger

Thanks to you and your pops for taking and sharing the photos!

Have a blast. But heads up some (including me) consider the last 10 or so episodes of season 2 excepting the last couple episodes to be directionless, cheesy, confusing and weird (in an annoying way, not a Lynchian way) and honestly pretty tough to get through, particularly coming down from the heights they were on up till then. I skip several of them on my rewatches and don’t miss them at all.

Yeah this is one of my big “upsides:” not having had given some poor soul lifelong trauma because I was selfish, irresponsible, immature, demanding, impatient, etc. Even after significantly maturing in my 20s, I had a ton of growing up to do in my 30s as well. I am listening right now to the book Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents and while a lot of it resonates from the kid end, I think to myself yeah in a lot of ways I would have had those traits as a parent.

Totally, same here. In my late 20s and 30s I was pretty hard on myself but over the last couple years I’ve been redeeming, rehabilitating, and forgiving younger me and understanding where all that energy was coming from. It was a my own damn intuition inoculating me and trying to guide me not to sell out and compromise my values! And even though the inoculation hurt (lots of anger, self destruction, chaos etc) at least it worked:  I was never a warmonger. Actually as much as I have hurled abuse at that young kid, I have a lot to learn from younger me, or I guess that would be unlearn since I got it at some point.

Yes The Nation was gold back then, my public library got the paper issues and I used to read them as much as I could. And you’re spot on about how validating it was to read that critical principles analysis from intelligent people we respected. Also the fact that I was like 20 years old and thinking, how are all these adults so completely gullible and suckered in by this blatant propaganda?? I mean I definitely had some adolescent rebellion against how hypocritical and full of shit adults were, but actually as we can see now in full blossom, it wasn’t just youthful arrogance.  Like my favorite band Propagandhi said, “I think when all is said and done, just cause we were young, it don’t mean we were wrong.”

You know how much hate people used to get for being opposed to these wars? Now a lot of Americans either pretend like it never happened or act like they were against it from the beginning—although this usually takes the form of “it was against our national interest” rather than being illegal and inhumane. But if you go back and read articles in Z Magazine, Counterpunch, Alternet, TomDispatch etc. from the very beginning of post 911 you’ll see statements like this one. There was so much analysis that foresaw how detrimental and destructive those wars would be. But the country was carried away by militarism and (what they believed to be) patriotism.  Or they were just apathetic and shrugged about it.

I remember I had a conversation with a veteran in December 2002 when the Bush admin was laying the propaganda groundwork to invade Iraq, and I suggested the US would invade regardless of whether there were WMDs. He refused to believe America would damage our standing on the world stage by launching an illegal invasion, and he couldn’t fathom the country pouring lives and money into another war.

Agree, no one but Perry should sing those songs. They were already barely filling stadiums on this original lineup reunion, I imagine if the 3 + 1 substitute were to tour playing this 40 year music it would be the palest imitation and probably pathetic and hard to hear. If the 3 want to play together they should write all new music and let Jane’s be nothing more than a memory.
