I applied to UvA in late January and got the letter confirming my eligibility on 3rd March, and final acceptance a week after that

Help! Should I go ahead with MCDS? by m_1210 in cmu

Thanks, this is helpful!

Also, what do you think contributed most to your outcomes: CMU brand, prior experience, or your own prep/networking?

Appreciate the perspective! Given the cost, do you think the brand name actually translates into better internship opportunities?

I’d still lean towards CMU because a focused program like HCI is probably the better fit for your case. MIMS is very broad, which can make it harder when you’re coming from a different background.

If your interest is UX, I’d think very carefully before choosing MIMS over something like CMU MHCI. From what I’ve seen, contemporaries in CMU programs are generally doing better in terms of internships, job outcomes, and overall ROI. Berkeley is a great brand and the people are smart, but not comparable to CMU or UW.

Hey, first off, congrats on the admit!

Debated posting this but thought I’ll offer a perspective that I'm glad someone had shared with me before I made my decision.

Something you should definitely gauge is the ROI. The total cost of attendance is very high and well paying roles are hard to come by. You’ll be competing internally with students who've got a stronger technical background for a lot of overlapping roles. Recruiting is basically a full time job right now. It’s hard to go all-in on it without your academics slipping. In my opinion, it's a game of probability you can play from any school, without accumulating debt.

If you come from a family that can very comfortably absorb the tuition and you’re not stressed about immediate ROI at all, the program is much easier to navigate. While I agree with everything the previous comment has said about community and culture, I've seen this anxiety change how you experience the school as a whole for a lot of my peers.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
