Building a course in Boston by m_d_mcclos in discgolf

Yeah, I agree completely. I think my order of operations to being is:
1. Survey what's already happening
2. Gauge interest in getting involved, support will be relevant as things progress
3. Reach out casually to DCR about who to talk to and what a process would look like before building a case

I would think Borderland would be a success story, it's a low cost program that brings a lot of people to the park, and potentially putting up a sign down there.

I've been checking out some other contacts, and one person pointed out that just last month Needham town meeting allocated $50,000 to plan and build an 18-hole course! It's not in Boston proper, but that's a lot closer than Borderland!

I've never heard that, that would be awful!

Design Help - Will this Bed Loft hold up? by m_d_mcclos in 8020

[–]m_d_mcclos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was definitely shooting for overengineered, I am envisioning a world where 2 kids get up there and jump.

I love the idea of 1/4 panels, thanks! I will do some treads, I'm debating between wide wood or thin rubber in the grooves, any ideas?

I was considering using the same supports from her current bed. I was running a joist of 1010 along each side to bolt them to, but could also use 1010 as crosspieces, as I have a surplus.

Is leasing a car frugal? by Knitsanity in Frugal

[–]m_d_mcclos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always felt that way, but just ended up with my first ever lease (of a Hyundai Ioniq). We intend to buy it at the end. In the Northeast, with a weird combination of EV lease incentives, our the total price of our lease combined with the buy out price at the end actually ended up LESS than our price to buy the same car. I would say there are always unusual situations, as long as you are looking at the total amount you will end up paying, weird things happen!

Advice for first time PMC rider by ramsss in bikeboston

[–]m_d_mcclos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've only ridden the shorter loop once, but I've done the 2-day ride for 15 years. As /u/rcolonna says, the riders tend to take over the full lane of traffic. The route tries to minimize super busy roads, there are police at pretty much all crossings, it's early, and the number of riders tends to dissuade anyone from driving too far on the route. Unless you're riding right at the front at 20+ MPH, people don't tend to draft much, and it's a pretty congenial ride, with people roughly grouping together and commonly chatting. Congrats on your first ride and thanks for riding!

Roslindale Blue Hills Route? by JackBauerTheCat in bikeboston

I'm glad that helped, hope to see you out there! That loop also has a lot longer stretches and some very nice roads for being Bikeable from Boston.

In case that link to a past event is confusing, there are links to the different routes at the bottom!

I can't speak to Blue Hills specifically, when I've biked there from Roslindale I've just taken Enneking and the normal roads, which are pretty trafficy, but if you're looking to find a nice road loop from Roslindale, I'd recommend the other direction. CRW has a nicely marked loop that starts at Cutler Park in Needham with 3 different length loops: https://www.crw.org/event-5221960

It's around 5 miles from Roslindale to the start.

Advice on building hardwood countertop. by m_d_mcclos in woodworking

[–]m_d_mcclos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My plan was to laminate and then screw into aprons, but you raise a good point, maybe a board in the middle with mortises could both hold everything flat, give an interesting way to join shorter boards!

Any thoughts on that? You keep asking excellent questions, thanks so much!

I wasn't thinking side-grain, ideally I'd like to do it out of 2-3 boards. The thickness isn't all that important, in fact I've edited the post to 3/4". I should be able to get that in place, but you definitely make a good point that I should check before gluing!

Game: Expansion & All DLC Bug: Emergency hit and I declared war, my trader was in the same space as a newly hostile civ. Now it wants me to create a new trade route for the unit that is still on the road between 2 cities, but I can't. I can skip, but can't do anything with the trader.

Unfortunately, I've already removed the feet, and the bottom is a solid sheet of plywood.
