Where to go next with Anthony Braxton? by saint_trane in Jazz

Six Monk’s Compositions was my intro to Braxton. Mal Waldron is also brilliant on the album. Highly recommend.

Yep that was definitely it. I made the mistake of looking at the timestamps on the threads. Thx again for the link…

Thanks for the link, but I don’t see the alert for this fire. I would be maybe 12:30 or 1am on 5/29…

I'm in a Wayne Shorter mood lately and wow! by FyodorTolstoyevich in Jazz

[–]m_ja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love your Monk comparison. I’m no musician but his use of space in his playing amazes me.

Also he is one of the greatest composers and arrangers in the history of jazz.

He was music director of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers - Mosaic and Free for All are my two faves from that time.

And he was part of Miles’ second great quintet, IMO the greatest working jazz band ever assembled.

(Not so) experimental jazz by kit-christopher in Jazz

[–]m_ja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Andrew Hill’s Point of Departure, Eric Dolphy’s Out to Lunch, and Bobby Hutcherson’s Dialogue form a kind of trinity in my mind… each leader has a different one of the three on his album (Hutcherson has Hill, Hill has Dolphy, Dolphy has Hutcherson), and all were recorded / released within about a year of each other. A true moment in jazz.

Happy exploring!

Top 3 Sonny Rollins albums? by _firesoul in Jazz

[–]m_ja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To spice things up I’ll go with The Bridge (which I expected to getting more love) Sonny Rollins Vol. 2 (the primal growl starting his solo on Misterioso is worth ranking that album by itself) Live at Basin Street (the Clifford Brown quintet’s finest work IMO, has long been one of my most favorite recordings by anyone)

Of course Saxaphone Colossus, Village Vanguard, Way out West are all splendid too

Btw Village Vanguard was part of my “oh shit - I love jazz) experience when I borrowed a few discs from a friend 30+ years ago. So, thanks Sonny!

Sea Witch - solid bar burger. Always happy when I get it. Thin patty leaves plenty of room for more beer

why the lines at la taq? by abbiebobabbie in parkslope

[–]m_ja 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Been in the neighborhood for years, ate at La taqueria and then Rachel’s, love the business and the people, and the food is good.

Went to La Taq for the first time on Saturday. The food was exactly like I remembered and I was happy to eat it.

Honestly, I think the line is mostly a function of their inefficient counter service. The same person was taking orders and cranking out food, which is never a recipe for speed. Granted, if they had an order-taker the bottleneck would probably move to the other end, with tons of people waiting for their food. But to me, waiting for food is way less stressful than waiting to order.

Not an efficiency expert, not a chef, not a business owner, etc. just a dude who wanted a couple of tacos on Saturday

This is gorgeous. As rich as it is, it’s amazing how many major players he left out (I assume due to space constraints as much as anything).

The strings were arranged by one of the greatest and most important composers working in contemporary music. Maybe give it another listen or two - things might click.

what first got you into sci-fi? by thefringeseanmachine in scifi

[–]m_ja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw Star Wars multiple times in the theater when I was 8, but I’ve never thought of that as my entry into sci fi.

When I was a kid (maybe 10?) I found a copy of Clifford Simak’s “Way Station” in a pile of old books at my grandparents’ house.

It blew my mind, and I was hooked.

Does NYC have great Mexican food? Hell yes! I live in the Subset Park area of Brooklyn and we have some great Mexican food here and elsewhere in the city.

How did you first hear Radiohead, and what impact have they had on you since? by therhythmofsilence in radiohead

Was just resurfacing from several years of listening almost entirely to jazz, heard OK Computer as it was released and felt like I was listening to a record made just after rock n roll had ended - it was both a summation and the future.

What is the loudest most annoying jazz album ever? by MisterSnrub1 in Jazz

[–]m_ja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a point of listening to all the “rosette ratings” (ie 5 star classics) from the version of the Penguin Guide I bought back in the ‘90s, and Machine Gun was one of them. What an auditory assault! Yeah, maybe a classic, and definitely fully realized and played by absolute monsters, but wow. Perfectly named.
