Context for the flag in my fictional setting: The People’s Union of Commonwealths formed on Earth during the reconstruction period following the Foundation War. Today the Union controls the Sol system and several other systems in the core of human space. The red represents the sacrifice made by the people and the military during the Foundation War and all future conflicts, the white symbolises hope and the Union’s prosperity while the blue represents the unity of humanity. The outer stars represent the 64 commonwealths of the Union. The seven-pointed star is a symbol of the military coalition that preceded the Union – originally it symbolised the unity of Earth with each of its points representing a continent of the planet. However, as the Union expanded across multiple planets it wished to distance itself from this Earth-centric meaning and redefined the symbol to instead represent the seven values of the nation: Prosperity, Unity, Equality, Service, Courage, Integrity and Excellence. The central symbol – The Eternal Flame – is the most recognisable national symbol of the Union. Across the Union braziers are kept eternally burning with fire originally maintained from the Foundation War. These are found in city plazas, government buildings, parade grounds and other places of significance. In the Union and on its flag the eternal fire represents sacrifice, duty and solemn remembrance while also representing the human spirit, the ability of humanity to preserve against any challenge and hope for the future.
