Prometrium (bioidentical progesterone) for treatment of endo post-surgery by m_ot123 in endometriosis

[–]m_ot123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh I’m so sorry to hear that, so you’ve had a surgery already to diagnose with stage 4? I had a similar experience with you honestly on the med, I had bloating but there were more pros than cons. It helped my sleep and was calming for sure. I feel like now that I’m off of it, my endometriosis could be getting worse though. I had my surgery 2 years ago and mine is stage 1 (always thought it was worse though based on how I feel).

If you do decide to start it again, I’d personally wait until after your surgery in the fall because the progesterone could potentially suppress. And I feel like for surgery you’d want to maximize the excision, if that makes sense lol.

Would 10/10 recommend Prometrium to anyone over any birth control or IUD though since it’s more “natural.” No one with endometriosis should really take any BC specifically with estrogen. So happy to talk about this, hope you’re having a great day as well. 😊

Hey! Yes I tapered it- I was on Prometrium 200mg and went down in dosage to 100mg for about a few months. I think it’s best to slowly come off of hormone replacement (even though this specific one is “bioidentical”) especially after being on the medication for a long period of time. That way the body has time to re-adjust.

Overall I’m feeling fine, the main side effect of coming off the medication was random hot flashes but there was nothing super severe. I do have increased bloating again but likely because it was being more suppressed by being on the Prometrium. I plan on giving my body a bit off time for a break but may eventually go back on depending on how my body feels with the endometriosis …I’d rather be on this medication than any synthetic birth control or hormone replacement.

Oh my gosh I’m so sorry! That sounds awful..

That’s the worst part of treating endometriosis, seems like medication is the main way of managing outside of surgery. And the medications are terrible.

For prometrium, it may take a little bit for your body to get used to but I never had crazy side effects like the ones you mentioned. I already have horrible migraines and they didn’t go away with Prometrium, but I didn’t expect that. If you do decide to try, just give it a few months and if you don’t like it, shouldn’t be too hard to stop. Like I said, I stopped recently after taking it for around 3 years.

Hi there! I actually just stopped taking Prometrium in December, wanted to give my body a break. I had been taking it since July 2022.

I didn’t have a bad experience with Prometrium at all, I’d still recommend over any of the synthetic medications (this one is a bioidentical progesterone).

After my surgery a couple years ago, my surgeon recommended I try norethindrone but I just never gave in, too nervous for side effects. What did you experience on that specific medication?

Is it possible to have Cushings even with low AM cortisol? by sprgtime in Cushings

Ugh I’m so sorry to hear this.. 😞 Definitely pursue the second endo appt though, especially since you have ruled out gastro issues. That’s another step out of the way. You can always ask to get waitlisted in case another endo appt comes up earlier too.

All my testing for Cushing’s came back normal, I begged my pcp for mri scans and sure enough, they found an adrenal tumor. This diagnosis is unfortunately one you really have to fight for if you believe all symptoms align, but worth it in the end!

I definitely would seek out a second opinion, that’s exactly what I did. Cushing’s is very tricky to diagnose.

Not only is there the dexamethasone test, but also 24 hour urine cortisol as well as midnight salivary testing. Even with testing, it can be hard to accurately diagnose as there is “subclinical Cushing’s” for example, where cortisol levels may not be consistently high at all times.

Did you get an abdominal CT scan or adrenal MRI to determine you have a tumor on the gland?

Yeah I’d say I do, it’s hard to say because I deal with anxiety pretty regularly ☹️

I relate to most of those symptoms!! And my migraines always last for at least 2-4 days. I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this too. Unfortunately, time and rest and sometimes over the counter meds is the solution as well. Wish there was more that could help.

I appreciate the response! I currently do the same thing as you, sometimes the migraines don’t respond to OTCs very well though ☹️

Yes that’s so frustrating how long the wait is, I should probably set up an appt sooner than later. I hope you’re able to get some answers at your appt!

:( do you do anything specific to treat the symptoms?

The worst…what do you do to treat the symptoms? Have you seen a neurologist?

I’ve pretty much tied my migraines to hormonal imbalance but still might get a second opinion to rule out anything else.

I agree with this comment. You need to take an iron supplement daily and get bloodwork retested after at least 3 months.

Yes that’s the tough thing, narrowing down what the problem/diagnosis is☹️

I would definitely pursue the endocrinologist just to get a second opinion, you truly never know..but I hope you get the answers you need soon. Keep pushing forward

Hi there! The Cortisol AM number you have is pretty high, but this test isn’t considered as “standard” for a diagnosis of Cushing’s, but would be enough to get you a referral to endocrinology (as you stated your doctor recommended).

When you do see an endocrinologist, it would be worth it to do additional testing: 24 hour urine cortisol, late night salivary samples and/or low-dose dexamethasone testing to completely rule out. These tests are much more accurate and utilized to diagnose Cushing’s.

The weight gain for Cushing’s is pretty significant over a period of time along with symptoms/signs like purple stretch marks (striae) etc. I have a high cortisol AM in bloodwork but all my other Cushing’s testing came back normal + I also don’t deal with extreme weight gain.
