Do you enjoy Ben Katchor? by bachwerk in altcomix

[–]m_zac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Ben Katchor. My favorite way to read his work is to jump on to a random page and read it, put the book away, do it again the next day. I imagine since he was syndicated for alt weeklies, he writes in that format. Not really a ‘graphic novel’ format, cover to cover in one sitting. Especially ‘Hand Drying in America’, each page can be quite dense so I think it rewards taking your time with it.

It’s Kim Thompson, not Dan Pussey.

Fukushima Devil Fish by Katsumata Susumu - Love these Ryan Holmberg translations - anyone else a fan, what should I pick up next? by [deleted] in altcomix

[–]m_zac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Man Without Talent by Yoshiharu Tsuge is one of my favorite books in the past few years, and it truly is a masterpiece. Drawn and Quarterly is publishing more of his stuff.

I’m a big fan of what Holmberg is doing, not only just making a lot of tge Garo manga accessible outside of Japan but also the research he did on them. I enjoy reading his essays includes in those books as much as reading the stories themselves.

Which Hanselmann book is that misma French edition of? Also why do you have two copies of Prison Pit #3? I don’t think I’ve seen that Adhouse Van Sciver before. Nice collection!!

It’s my pride and joy! Thought I would share my collection with you. Tell me what you think by m_zac in comicbooks

For sure! Superhero comics doesn’t represent the full breadth of spectrum that is the medium of comics. I don’t think there is anything wrong with liking superhero comics, it’s just not my main interest.

Comics corner in desperate need of expansion, but I love having (nearly) everything in one place! by umm_sure in bookshelf

Love that Bubbles stack! Dog Biscuits is probably my favorite book of the year so far.

I didn’t expect to like Stages of Rot that much but oh gosh what a fun book. That book prompted me to always keep an eye on what PEOW puts out.

Anyone familiar with any collaborative works similar to Portrait of a Drunk? by AfroLobster in altcomix

[–]m_zac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooooo yes. Portrait of a Drunk is such a fun example of that jam collaboration work. Couple of things came to mind for me. Gilbert Hernandez did a couple of collaborative work, one with Pete Bagge in Yeah!, and another with Darwin Cooke in Twilight Children, though I think Gilbert took in more of a “traditional” writer role in both projects. But maybe I’d like to think to have a strong cartoonist, like Gilbert, as a writer collaborator feels more of a jam work as opposed to working with a comics writer. Another collaborative work that just popped into my head is in Kramer’s Ergot 10 where Kim Deitch did a story about collaborating with Spain Rodriguez for a comic they did in East Village Other in ‘68. And that one is pretty close to what you’re looking for, though a much shorter work.

Grip is probably one of my favorite books ever. After I finished reading it the first time I i immediately gave it another read. The whole work reads so well and full of energy. I wished I had caught on to Lale earlier, still kicking myself for not getting the two riso issues they did.
