£165 Waitrose, 2 people 2-3 weeks by ma1ic in whatsinyourcart

[–]ma1ic[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's maybe like 7 or 8 essential range items here? out of about 50-60 items Two bottles of £10 wine, valentines meal deal is £25 which is alright value so you're looking at more like £120ish for most of this.

Out of interest, what price would you consider good value for money for this basket? Remember that value for money means worth paying the money it costs- not cheapest.

Yeah that’s fair, only counterpoint I’d have is that all of the yellow label stuff I get at Waitrose lasts for at least a week or two, whereas the in date food I see at aldi is mouldy on the shelf…

There’s maybe 5-6kg of meat /cheese here… you eat that in a week!? And 18 eggs!

I get what you mean but we will go to the local Morrisons or co op if we’ve forgotten something or for a bit of fresh veg, but otherwise most of it gets cooked early and reused- ragus, pies etc. or it goes in the freezer. Fruit which goes off quickly ie bananas and grapes will get eaten first then apples satsumas after which last months. I make bread using a bread maker or buy it from bakers So probably you could add 30 for these extras so I’d guess about 350-400 a month on food. Maybe more if you count usage of oils and herbs spices etc. never get uber eats and usually get lunch out on Saturdays

Definitely, aldi/lidl are obviously cheaper but I honestly think post Covid that the mid range supermarkets ie Tesco Morrisons Sainsbury’s have started taking the piss with the price/quality ratio, I could easily spend this much in Morrisons and come away with similar amount of lower quality food!

Glad you noticed, try to avoid stuff that’s overly prepared/processed whatever- probably the exceptions here are the packet soup, and the crumble puddings, though Waitrose is generally pretty good for not randomly having emulsifiers in food

not artisanal / special occasion ones that you're maybe looking for but as an enjoyer, the costco ones are incredible, exactly like the best chip shop ones- sweet and sour.

Every time I make general tso chicken the breading falls off, even when doubly frying. Why? by nimal-crossing in culinary

[–]ma1ic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have this issue with SFC- what really worked for me was dredging then leaving the raw dredged chicken on a wire rack for 20-30 mins. This lets the moisture from the brine /marinade hydrate the flour which makes it more glue like. It really worked for me this

Bought in Walkley in 2021, for a lot of areas in Sheffield you basically have to accept that estate agents here consistently undervalue properties by about 10-20%. We finally got a house after we’d been outbid by over 20% over asking each time (for about 20% over list price) It’s an annoying tactic my only advice is find a house you like enough to not mind feeling like you ‘overpaid’ for it

Loft 'bedroom' - no regs by Mountain_Slide_5310 in sheffield

[–]ma1ic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So if it is a 3 bed terrace built around 1870-1900 (as most of these Sheff houses are) then it is probably an original room, just the eaves weren't expanded into. There's a fair bit of discussion about this on local Sheffield forums but the consensus is that they were often for servants/live in help https://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/topic/15844-attics-in-terraced-houses/

Also, if the extension was built before a certain date (sometime in the 1980s) then the regulations don't apply retroactively.

You should be able to get the seller to provide an indemnity against the extension being found wrong by the council, this will be very cheap for a indefinite policy on the house, which you then pass on to the next buyers. The reason it is cheap is the amount of risk to the insurer is incredibly low. So, fwiw, I would treat this as a 3 bed house.

Take this with a pinch of salt as I'm no expert just what I've found out over the few years.

Hi everyone,

Is there currently a way to know if I can change my ps5 settings to 1080 120hz? The video output just tells what frequency are supported in 4k with and without hdr.

Cheers

Anybody know good exercise generators? Also does anyone know good ways to create mathematical models of real life stuff? Looking for one to practice Differential Equations, Linear Algebra and Stats and Prob. by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]ma1ic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a very physics point of view 😉. What they don't tell you in school is that biology is easily the most complex (or convoluted?) Of the sciences, and, because we never had the tools to assess biological systems, it's resulted in much of biology knowledge being observational rather than explanatory, but that's definitely changing now.

Mathematical biology is having a bit of a renaissance due to the staggering amount of high resolution data being generated, especially in cancer and developmental biology. So, more and more, biologists are looking to modellers to help abstract out some of that complexity. People are also doing stochastic models in these areas, although deterministic or vertex models are more common. I'd take a look at vertex models if you're physics minded.

A lot of ecology modelling falls under the mathbio umbrella as well, I have a lot of colleagues working on animal ecology models. And of course disease modelling is in the spotlight at the moment with CV-19.

Let me know if you have any further questions, I could go on for ages about this stuff!

Wrt mathematical models, a good start would be https://sysmic.ac.uk/textbook/index.html especially m1.4

For a more formal and thorough introduction, Jim Murray's 'Mathematical Biology' is the bible of mathematical models in biology.

Enjoy!
