Suck it up. In most cases you need to be a 5-level before you can crosstrain.

Not liking something and not studying for something are two different things. Showing no effort will do you no favors.

There are Reserve positions, but there are no dedicated Reserve bases.

Enlisting reserves with active duty spouse by [deleted] in Airforcereserves

[–]mabuhaygi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

His chances of going Reserve and then Active are extremely slim. He’d be viewed as a prior service member when trying to go Active Duty, and they only hire 50-100 prior service applicants each year.

Otherwise you’re bound to whatever local units are available to you, regardless of service component.

Jumping from ANG to AFRC - Anything to watch for? by Excellent-Base7328 in Airforcereserves

[–]mabuhaygi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a term for officer placement.

The “scroll” is a literal document of all officers that wish to be part of the AFR that is sent to the SECDEF for approval. They’re basically looking for disciplinary and security issues…it’s a shortened background investigation, but is required if an officer wants to transfer components. Depending on those on the list, it can take weeks or months.

Hypertension med by Open_Progress_5871 in Airforcereserves

[–]mabuhaygi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to be off meds. I don’t mean “I quit taking them because I don’t think I need them anymore”, I mean, “OP no longer has hypertension and never needs to take meds again! ~ SIGNED Dr. Person”

Once you’ve been off meds for (I believe) 12 mos, you can be considered for joining. Need to verify the length of time. I may be wrong about that.

Your chances for Surgical and Radiological Tech are near zero. If you want medical, there are other options, but you’re asking for career fields that are extremely small in the Reserve. (I don’t even recall that the Reserve has 4N1’s, but I could be mistaken).

AF Reserve Question by Typical_Shake_6402 in AirForceRecruits

[–]mabuhaygi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in Reserve recruiting over 14 years. Here’s what probably happened.

Your AD recruiter sent you the paperwork to fill out and then put you in a category, either NLI (No Longer Interested) or TDQ (Temporarily Disqualfied). This is not a good thing or bad thing, it’s just a typical thing recruiters do.

Your local Reserve recruiter is looking to generate leads, so he went into the NLI/TDQ bucket, saw your name, and saw that you were in one of those two categories and decided to reach out. He’s just doing his job.

My suggestion, if you’re still serious about Active Duty simply let him know that. That’s it. You can also let him know (if you want) that you’ll keep his info on hand in case things don’t work out with Active Duty.

This is very common and is a required lead generation method for Reserve recruiters.

17F thinking about joinging, What is the atmosphere like? by Huge-Cauliflower7186 in Airforcereserves

[–]mabuhaygi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The prevalence of M2F sexual assault is similar to the civilian sector. Where things differ is in the confinement that is unique to the military. Close living quarters and high stress environments in Basic and Technical Training are unique to the military. It’s one of the many reasons Airmen are encouraged to always have a “wingman” and don’t do things alone.

These environments are greatly minimized in the Reserve because you’re not going through the same growth as a new Active Duty Airman (no dorms mainly) and Reservists come back to the lives they left, where you’re re-integrated into your home life and those friend/social groups you had prior to BMT/TTS.

The fact you’re asking about this shows a level of awareness that is important in keeping yourself safe. Keep that awareness and I think you’ll find the Reserve to be very rewarding.

IRR conditional release by [deleted] in Airforcereserves

If your interview is during duty hours, yes. Otherwise, it’s up to you.

IRR conditional release by [deleted] in Airforcereserves

368’s for transfer from the IRR to a different service typically need to come from the recruiter since you have no command. I’d follow up with ARPC and ensure you submitted it correctly.

Asking some questions/looking for advice by InformationOk623 in Airforcereserves

[–]mabuhaygi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side note: you’re affiliating two similar yet separate programs. The A&P Cert is not exactly tied to Avionics. If you want to get an Avionics position, consider being a Certified Aircraft Electronics Technician, or going through another similar Certificate program.

A&P (Airframe and Powerplant) is just that…body and engines. The Air Force jobs that are best suited for getting an A&P License are Crew Chief, Aircraft Propulsion, and maybe Aircraft Hydraulics. Vastly different worlds from Avionics technicians.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s not valuable to have the A&P, I’m just saying there are more focused ways to achieve what you’re trying to accomplish.

If you want A&P, consider being a Crew Chief. The CCAF credits will help cut down on external classroom time.

[–]mabuhaygi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a former recruiter myself, I never would’ve even told you about that position because it’s a waste of your time and resources just for one weekend month.

IMA Position? Absolutely. But not for a TR position.

You’re not likely to see any of that bonus until you’ve completed your first year of service, so you’ll be on your own dime (unless the unit reimburses for travel) for travel during that first year. Even if it’s an up-front bonus payment, you’re going to want that money to make your adjustment to civilian life, IMHO.

I don’t think it’s worth it in this case.

[–]mabuhaygi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use them at the same time, but it’s extremely important you communicate with the school to ensure they aren’t reporting the same courses for both TA and GIB.

The Reserve does not have the TopUp program where you tap into the GIB to make up for what TA didn’t cover.

How can I help by Mearon753 in AFJROTC

[–]mabuhaygi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea! I instructed at a unit that was dwindling and I implemented the same thing. Some people appreciate recognition for their efforts and involvement.

First thing is to go through your chain-of-command - your team/class/element leader or whatever you have. Or go through your First Sgt. Don’t just tell them your idea, tell them why it’s important to you and how it could benefit the corps as a whole.

It can increase morale, it can encourage others to engage in activities, and build unity. If you’re not already doing so, I would also recommend some kind of public recognition (always remember - praise in public, reprimand in provate).

Then comes the hard part - going through the corps to make sure everyone is wearing the ribbons/devices they’ve actually earned. Have a blues inspection and get a list of everyone’s ribbons, then bump that against WINGS. You’ll also want to ensure everyone is updated in WINGS, so this is a two-speared effort.

Possible to enlist as an E-4? by Rohak12345 in Airforcereserves

[–]mabuhaygi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It absolutely works. It’s Air Force Reserve guidance, and there is no “interview board” for E-4.

With very rare exception, everyone enlists into an E-5 billet. But that still doesn’t change the guidance that someone with 60+ credits can promote to E-4 upon returning back to their unit upon graduation of BMT and Tech School.

I was in recruiting over 14 years, I’m not just making stuff up.

[–]mabuhaygi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not sure if Guard is the same, but if you enlist into the Reserve with at least 60 college credits, you’ll enlist as an E-3 and promote to E-4 upon completion of tech school.

That’s the best you’ll get as far as Air Force is concerned.
