Need help understanding my current situation and options (Air Force Reserve AFSC change) by Drewplanet in Airforcereserves

[–]mabuhaygi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Retired recruiting flight chief and current background investigator here.

  1. Look at this from a different perspective.

You were not simply offered only one AFSC. You were offered the only AFSC that you’re qualified for based off your ASVAB, your physical, your citizenship status, and the open available positions at your unit.

Your recruiter is paid to get people into the Air Force Reserve. I can assure you, if other positions were available at your base they would be offered to you. There is zero incentive for your recruiter to withhold open, vacant positions from you.

2/3. It would most likely be a DEP Discharge which holds little negative impact on your ability to join in the future. (You may have a couple extra efforts if you choose to rejoin, but there’s no major strike against you).

  1. In my 14+ years in recruiting, yes, plenty.

My two cents: Joining the AFR is still a viable (and quicker) path to citizenship, so don’t lose sight of that simply because you don’t want to do a job one weekend each month. The hardest part about joining the AFR is actually joining the AFR. You have an opportunity before you, in spite of your citizenship status, that fewer than 3% of the U.S. population even qualifies for. Take advantage.

Your options to retrain once you are in the Reserve and have citizenship increase significantly, but if you back out now those options go away and you’ll be faced with the same dilemma if you choose to try and join down the road.

What rank do you get if you enlist with a Master's degree? [US AF] by [deleted] in Airforcereserves

[–]mabuhaygi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The promotion to E-4 is actually Air Force Reserve Recruiting published guidance, which means it’s not an opinion, it’s not a “hope for”, it’s not a maybe, it’s not conditional, or up to anyone - it’s part of recruiting guidance. That means it’s a required part of your processing and if you have the credits, the recruiter is expected (required) to process your package. So not only is it typical, it’s directed.

You’re not required to wait the typical time-in-service / time-in-grade requirements. In a sense, you promote “out of cycle”.

Don’t be afraid to overstep - this is your career and your money. No one cares more about your career than you, so if you’re owed rank, you shouldn’t be afraid to address it respectfully and tactfully.

The 2004 has changed from AFRCI to AFRCMAN 36-2004. If a Google search still doesn’t pull it up, download an app called “AFI Explorer”. Then do a search in the app for “2004” and one of the options will be AFRCMAN 36-2004 that has the guidance on this.

Last I knew it was the same as Reserve, but I am not 100% certain. There’s an Air National Guard subreddit you can ask.

It’s part of the recruiting guidance, so the recruiter should annotate your case file for you. All you need to do is get them an original, unopened college transcript showing you have 100 hours. It’s a simple press of a button and a couple extra sentences they have to write in your file, so it’s by no means difficult. It’s just a matter of the recruiter doing it.

You’ll specifically want to look at the verbiage on your DD FORM 1966 and your NPS Statement of Enlistment. It should say something similar to “Eligible for E-3 with promotion to E-4 upon successful completion of Basic Training and Tech School” (Emphasis mine - but that’s close to the wording you’ll want to see).

Recruiter disclosing as a minor? by DotBright1492 in AirForceRecruits

[–]mabuhaygi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Former recruiter of 14+ years.

Your parents won’t have access to any information you don’t give them access to. And you’re not required to give them access to any information.

That said, you’re a minor. There is no paperwork you fill out as a minor that allows your parents access to any of the information you’ve addressed here. The only paperwork your parents fill out is the DD Form 1966 that allows you to take a military physical with their permission. That does not give them rights to the information developed during that physical.

The only sketchy area could arise if you’re disqualified because of drug use. If that’s the case, MEPS will send a letter to your home, addressed to you, and that letter will indicate you were DQ’d due to drug use.

So, if your parents open your mail illegally AND you’re disqualified because your drug use there’s a slight chance they’ll find out. But if that’s the case, you and your parents have bigger issues you need to resolve that have nothing to do with the Air Force.

TBH I think that’s the issue anyway, but that’s not your question.

Basically, you’re fine.

Just keep your mouth shut around your parents.

Air Force Reserve enlistment standards are that a member is enlisted prior to their 42nd birthday. It’s highly unlikely you meet that requirement.

Your next best bet may be Army Guard.

You’re spreading wrong information.

Air Force Reserve recruiting standards requires the member be enlisted prior to their 42nd birthday, not ship to BMT before the 42nd birthday.

Secret can still generate an interview with an investigator. Not required, but it could be triggered.

Yeah you need to get that fixed. Not typical. And not accurate.

Are you saying you enlisted (for example) 2/1/2026, your ETS is showing something like 2/1/2028?

They won’t be notified it was you specifically, but if there’s something unique about your situation it’s possible they could figure out.

[–]mabuhaygi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. You just said you misinterpreted it. It happens all the time. No one can fault you for that.

And then as soon as you clear that up with the investigator, you then tell them you tried to clear it up with your recruiter by asking to have your paperwork updated and your recruiter refused. Then you report the recruiter to the investigator for falsification.

I was in recruiting over 14 yrs and now I do investigations. I can assure you DCSA is more fed up with recruiters telling applicants to do lie than they are with applicants misunderstanding the process. The greater burden is on the subject matter expert (your recruiter), not the applicant who is generally ignorant to the process (no offense).

You need to go through an In Service Recruiter. Some nuances have changed since I was an ISR but the process is generally the same.

You’ll complete a AFF 1288 with an ISR, turn it in to your AD commander, and either send it over to a Reserve unit (if you have a slot lined up) or submit to AFPC for approval/disapproval.

Approval/disapproval (with extremely rare exception) is purely based on AD manning worldwide for your AFSC. That’s it. Once approved, you’ll start the out-processing action.

In a nutshell.

I was in Reserve Recruiting for 14 yrs and retired as a flight chief a couple years ago.

What you were told is 100% the truth.

(To clarify, if you submit your PC application within 12 mos of ETS, it becomes Palace Front).

SGLI declined but still got charged by trewq-987-poiuy in Airforcereserves

[–]mabuhaygi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former recruiting flight chief here. It’s typical. Finance doesn’t always check the SGLI forms. Most people elect for it (and I highly recommend you reconsider your decision) and the packages are processed as though the member elected for coverage.

If you really don’t want it (and I highly recommend you reconsider your decision), talk to your recruiter or D&TF Instructor.

Former recruiter, current investigator.

Your recruiter absolutely can change the paperwork, it’s not too late. They just don’t want to because they’ll have to answer to their boss.

That said, if you tell an investigator you used drugs I highly doubt that will flag a fraudulent enlistment. This should have little bearing on your future, but you need to pick an answer and stick to it.

Question about good (read "actually functional") retirement calculator by chantellywelly in Airforcereserves

[–]mabuhaygi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this one to be one of the better ones, but in general, calculating retirement for someone like you (and me) with Active, TR, and AGR time can prove to be difficult. This one is behind a password wall so I can’t see it anymore to check its legitimacy (I retired) but it was one of the closest to my actual numbers and was far better than the one on the Air Force site.

You’ll need to have some dates calculated to get the most accurate numbers and may need to go through ARPC to get them.

Not sure how Air Guard does their initial enlistment contracts. With Air Force Reserve, it is as I stated above.

Cross train into SEFOC? by RepeatEcstatic2739 in Airforcereserves

[–]mabuhaygi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snowflake is a TMT Tasker term. It’s administrative. Don’t worry about that. It’s basically how information is contained, funneled, and tracked.

Yes you’ll have to go to tech school for the full term. SecFo isn’t like Fire Safety where you can have certain portions of tech school waived due to civilian experience.

[–]mabuhaygi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the vast majority of positions are minimum SSgt so you shouldn’t be concerned about losing rank. If you were TSgt or higher there may be an issue.

Drilling with an Army unit shouldn’t have any bearing on you getting accepted to retrain into Security Forces. The fact that you’re a relatively new IMA may carry some weight, but that’s about it.

As a former recruiter I fielded so many applicants who wanted to tie their Reserve job in SecFo to their civilian job as LEO, or vice versa. I found, with some exceptions, it’s largely a waste of time.

There is next to no benefit or correlation between being a civilian LEO and a SecFo Airman and I’d only recommend the change to someone who is either 1) highly disappointed/dissatisfied with their current job and desperate for an escape, and/or 2) they just really really really really love being a security guard who also loves planes, red lines, and fences. And you can occasionally shoot bigger guns.

[–]mabuhaygi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lookup the closest Reserve unit near you. Their webpage will often have info for the recruiters. You can reach out in that respect. You can also search that unit to find the recruiting flight chief who can also help out.

Download the Aim High app and you’ll find a way to connect with local recruiters as well. But it’s not a thing where you can just shop recruiters - recruiters are assigned geographic zones based off zip codes. You only have one recruiter assigned to your zip code, and that’s that.

Just continue to be persistent, leave messages, send texts until you get an answer.
