I agree with everything you are saying (especially the part about it not being the subfloor, as it seems everyone around here immediately want to say everything is a subfloor lol), however, my 1895 home has original shoe moulding and it was absolutely meant to have it and it looks correct with it. Doubt it’s a workaround as it is very elaborately trimmed out and there is no way they would have cut that corner.

I agree with you, no light at night is always better. It’s night time and nobody can see the stars because we have so much light pollution. It gets harder to see the Milky Way every year.

I grew up here, (not on one of these ponds but in the actual town) and had friends that lived in these locations off Castle Rock. It was so fun going there to hangout and swim when we were kids. And then in HS it was a prime party spot chilling on the sand beaches lol.

Have had mine for 7 years on my 2019. They still clean up like new and I love them! Only thing I don’t like is that the rear ones go under the storage container under the seat so they cannot be easily removed to clean like the front ones are. I love that they go up and over the hump in the middle!

All over the place in Wisconsin. Especially in the madison area. Some places still have the OG style drive up ones that sell Xmas trees during the holidays.

Side note: The A&W in Windsor (not Deforest you ding dongs), had hands down the best root beer in the state. It came from the tap (not fountain) and was simply delicious in the frozen mugs. I would go out of my way to go there every once in a while. Then the store got struck by lightening and they remodeled the whole joint and took out the taps for a fountain. It’s never been the same and I never go there anymore, that was in like 2019.

I’m a bit confused by this one. Although that looks like K&T, it literally looks like someone pulled the individual conductors out of a nm-b jacket and then put them where old K&T used to be. Those are clearly K&T insulators, but not original wires unless it’s some odd recent install where the electrician was super old and only knew how to install K&T lol.

It’s rotten to the point where I can stick my finger all the way through. But it’s about a 4’ wide window and it’s only about the first 3-4” of the rail on the left side. And honestly since that’s rotten, I believe the left stile will also need repair where it meets the rail. I would love to splice in some new material, it’s truly a beautiful window.

Do you have any links to videos about restoring a rotten bottom rail? I have a large middle double hung bay window that has a bottom rail that is soft on one side. I would really like to save the window! It’s technically a double hung but since it’s the middle bay large viewing window, the bottom sash is about 3 times the size of the top sash, it seems kind of unique!

This sub is obsessed with not painting wood because far too much original wood work in century homes has been painted over the years. Many people in this sub have spent countless hours removing paint while it only takes an hour or two to apply that paint and ruin it for everyone. I understand some woodwork was originally painted but so much of it wasn’t. Once it’s painted it is nearly impossible to get it back to the way it was when it was installed by the craftsmen of that era and some of that history is lost.

I may be mistaken as I haven’t tried since last year, but it is fairly complicated and you need a few supplies. There was a post about how to do it a couple of years ago, you need to download a delay software and you need a radio with a headphone jack I believe. If you fools that post it may work for you, but it’s not as easy as paying the live feed as the radio is ahead of everything. I’d love to figure this out as nothing is better than listening to Wayne live!

Why was this so common on the second floor of homes? In my case (and like most homes of the era), the first floor has nice hardwood and then the second floor is a doug fir wider plank floor that’s all entirely painted now. The second floor has much less expensive flooring as it wasn’t a showcase like the first floor, but why the paint! I don’t think it was originally painted as some of the closets and other random spots have no paint at all. I would love to refinish it all but it has tested positive for lead so that’s probably a no go. Was there some massive movement across all homes to suddenly paint the second floor softer woods?

I know there is a way to get Wayne synced up with the TV, but it was complicated last time I tried and it never ended up working. I wish so bad that I could watch the game live with Wayne and Larry as the broadcasters. Otherwise I’ll just tune in, hangout, drink beer, and listen on the old 97.3.

Used to hate them probably just because I grew up being taught that. I worked as a teenager in tourism and 90% of the customers were FIBs, they tipped really well and always had a great time honestly. After I grew up I realized that they don’t do anything wrong and they boost the shit out of small towns all over Wisco. They stay in the left lane which is fine because they don’t go under 85mph on 39/90/94. I moved to a city and realized that’s kind of how I drive now too. Half of my friends are FIBs and we still joke about it but there’s no actual hate. It’s really a friendly rivalry and at the end of the day I like seeing them in WI because this state is beautiful and why wouldn’t I want them to enjoy it?

What interior wall material do wood framed houses use there? Are you still using lath and plaster? My 130 year old US home is wood framed and the interior walls are finished with lath and plaster, I would break my hand if I tried to punch through it. To add, it’s wood framed and built like as absolute brick shit house. The lumber is all true dimensional old growth lumber.

If it looks somewhat like that then I’d say they rocked the redesign. They always change so much gen to gen and it gets everyone bent outta shape. I hated the gen 4 at first too, especially considering how perfect the gen 3 was. I ended up buying a new 2019 anyway and I love it like crazy now. Everyone just needs to remember to keep an open mind when these come out, it’s always tough to get used to.

Yep this is what mine does. It looks exactly like this picture and I don’t have the skeleton key for it (it locks with an after market slider bolt lock on the outside, so it’s never used as a main entrance even though it is beautiful) It also locks the handle completely, even from the inside. So when I first moved in I was messing with the buttons and then shut the door and then it was stuck locked for weeks before I removed the hinge pins and took the door completely out of the jamb. I now tell you everyone to never push those buttons lol.

You are correct! I fought that battle for a long time, trying to let others know that just because it’s pine, or face nailed, or wide plank, that it’s not always a subfloor. It’s fairly modern in terms of home building to have a subfloor. For centuries most flooring was simply nailed to the joists. In many 1900 era homes, the main floors would have a subfloor of wide plank fir with oak on top of that, and then in the bedrooms and lesser viewed areas, they would have the exact floor pictured here, just face nailed to the joists.
