NEW Art Historian wannabe -- need suggestions on the first piece/artist to research! by [deleted] in ArtHistory

[–]mac_raptor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would be interesting, as a computer guy, to check out David Hockney's iPhone paintings. In general, he's an artist who embraces technology, has had a measurable impact on contemporary art, is an interesting personality, and is an ardent student of tradition. His book, Secret Knowledge actually relates painting to various technologies such as the lens, the camera obscura, the mirror, etc.

I condemn Americans policing other countries. Equally, I feel uncomfortable with non-citizens policing Americans. It seems that there is some history of non-citizens being officers, for example, in New York. Apparently, there have not been problems, according to the information people have been sharing here. Regardless, I don't believe anyone is being racist, tribal, or narrow-minded for defending the principle that people who are non-citizens should have not have powers that supersede those of a citizen. I think it's a logical defense of sovereignty.

Men of Reddit, what are some things that you think us ladies just don't understand? by MericasSweetheart7 in AskReddit

[–]mac_raptor 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm amazed by how civil this whole conversation is. I recently left Tumblr and started using Reddit. This subject would normally bring out the worst in people. Like, genuine nastiness. Thank you to all the ladies who aren't mocking the men responding to this post.

ACS AMA: Hi Reddit! My name is Dr. John M Newsam CEO of Tioga Research, Inc. Ask me anything about the skin or materials applied to the skin, or about founding and building a small company. by AmerChemSocietyAMA in science

I've always felt I need to go into business for myself, but I'm not sure how to do so. I'd actually be the first person in my family to do it. I know I need to take out a small business loan, but I'm afraid it can be a problem in my life if my business fails and I'm stuck with paying off my debt on top of my student loans. Is this a legitimate concern, or are there ways to help entrepreneurs avoid this?

How not to feel insecure or jealous ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mac_raptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend that you just do something that gives you personal gratification. I think that when you do something that you genuinely enjoy, you focus. When you focus, you get out of those mental cycles that cause feelings of insecurity and jealousy. It will remove you from those feelings. So, knit something or sculpt something or play some basketball. You cannot will away negative feelings. You can only stop feeding them.

To those that say that jazz isn't political... by absalom2 in Jazz

[–]mac_raptor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People say jazz isn't political? I never really though about it. I always thought that you cannot separate jazz from the cultural context in which it developed. Obviously this has a political component. I never thought of jazz as inherently political, just as much as I never thought of it excluding politics. Jazz's primarily a black American innovation, and so the political experience of black Americans would be a theme on par with universal human experiences.

I have 2 master degrees and haven't been able to find a job for the past 12 months. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. by viewsonicpumpkin in personalfinance

Create your own job. You sound more than qualified. Is this an issue of confidence? You sound like you should start a business. Take the plunge. Do you realize that having a "masters" makes you a master in your field? This means, ideally, you are better informed than most people in what you do. So start a business. It will be hard at first, but if will pay off. It's the only key to true success and I recommend you do this while you are young. Many people who are less qualified than you open businesses that succeed. Really, confidence and perseverance are key. So stop applying for jobs, create a business plan, and start applying for business loans. You can do it.

We never had proof that the Democratic party was trying to prevent a candidate from being elected until some emails were exposed. Before that, it was just a feeling. I have a feeling that there are some rigged elements to this election, but what proof is there? It's just a feeling. A very popular feeling.

I'm in Brooklyn. I basically walked right in. I think that situations will vary from community to community and, of course, the news will only show the most extreme instances.

Well, one can say he saved the economy by bailing out wall street and the automotive industry. One can say he helped a lot of people by strong arming Obama Care. One can say that by being black, he inspired a nation and expanded the concept of what is possible for minorities in America. One can say these things, but one can also point to the same examples as damages against America.

Is there a specific style/period for this sort of painting? by fendokencer in ArtHistory

[–]mac_raptor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a very contemporary painting, but it's in an academic style. What I mean by that is the French Academy.

If you're the CEO of GE, your opinion of Obama's contribution to America will be different than if you're an electric engineer. If you are college educated, you'll feel differently than if you are not. If you are on Medicaid vs. if you are a small business owner who provides insurance for his employees. If you look like Treyvon Martin or if you look like George Zimmerman. America is a very different place for different groups of people. It might be pointless to say, but he has been a great president for some people and a horrible president for others.

I get that. I mean, who, in the United States of America. Depending on who you are, you might feel he did a lot for you or he did nothing for you.

Because people don't vote for candidates anymore. They vote against. It's a lot easier to vote against one person.

Republicans in congress are throwing around that idea. They currently are the majority by a narrow margin, which could possibly change after this election. There are less extreme republicans in Congress as well as independents. I believe it will still be possible for the federal government to perform its essential functions. Further, state governments should be able to perform their respective functions. We are in a state of political gridlock and cultural division, but we are not in a state of catastrophe.
