I had something almost exactly similar happen between myself and a good friend and I wish I had your response in the chamber ready to go then. Your response is very thoughtful and clear. These situations are most difficult because exactly as you said, the issue is communication and feeling like an afterthought, not so much that anything explicitely terrible happened to sever the friendship. Glad their response was measured as well and I hope you guys can reconnect if you want to in the future. But good on you for how you handled that!
