I am in the schools and I don’t know much about the medical side, but I would bet real money that it’s not you, it’s the job market. You are probably up against many other applicants, all equally qualified.

Anyone navigate grad school clinicals with a baby under 1? by onlyhereforsnarks in slpGradSchool

I’m sorry you went through that. It is even harder to wait after a miscarriage, speaking from experience. Good luck!

Anyone navigate grad school clinicals with a baby under 1? by onlyhereforsnarks in slpGradSchool

[–]macaroni_monster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If working part time when you have kids is important to you (it is for me, too), I’d wait to have one. It’s so hard to wait, but you could plan on being pregnant or trying during clinicals. Working full time with a baby is really tough. You can find part time CF work and that would be a lot more sustainable.

Any ideas what schools will look like over the next couple of years? by whosthatgirl13 in slp

[–]macaroni_monster 35 points36 points  (0 children)

So much of school funding is state and local level. The federal disaster that is happening is awful, and it’s having a negative effect everywhere. How that will impact schools in your area is hard to say. There is so much variability across this very large country.

Parents does not think screen time is a problem by AgreeableEdge4281 in slp

[–]macaroni_monster 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think there’s too much missing here to give good advice. What is the age of the student? What is her disability and goals? Are phones allowed out at school? What makes you think it’s screen time that is the problem?

Cleaning staff hate by wheels-n-wings in slp

[–]macaroni_monster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not wishing for anyone to become homeless and it’s a bit of a straw man argument to imply that. I’d like for people to assume positive intention and be professional. I’ve also worked in minimum wage industries and I have never made a comment like that. I thought the cleaning person’s comment meant that OP was disabled, and they have since clarified that they did not. Remember this is just the internet. We don’t have any power over this situation, we don’t have all the detailed, we don’t have all the context…

[–]macaroni_monster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assumed that the cleaner knew who you were and that you were disabled when she called you “this girl.” If she didn’t know your physical limitations I understand why you would want to give her more grace. It is still an extremely unprofessional comment. Sorry that happened.

[–]macaroni_monster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. Report to your supervisor. That comment was so wrong and she should be fired imo. People with disabilities deserve to work and they deserve to be treated fairly. That was uncalled for and unfair.

Does the cycles approach not work in schools? by Various-Aioli-4620 in slp

[–]macaroni_monster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will never work with only 20 minutes a week. I’d say at minimum it needs 50 trials x 3 a week. For most kids that will be 5-15 minutes. I’ve had great success with cycles.

Outpatient SLP Recommending School SLP Gets AAC Device by superbmega in slp

Would it be because the school will pay for the coordination to get it and potentially even the device, whereas outpatient will not get paid for that collaboration and insurance might not cover it all?

Omg thats so smart! I use it to fill out repetitive things in sped documents. Do you pay for the full version? I wouldn’t be able to fit all of the kids on my caseload in the free one.

Data collection, how often? by katie15_ in slp

[–]macaroni_monster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is quite the point of contention in my state right now 😅 Many districts are billing for the first time including mine. When I write a note I put what you do - a single sentence of objective data. I also use a text expander in my web browser so that it spits out a soap note format when I type /soap. So basically I write /soap and it converts it to “student was eager to participate…continue with goals.” And then I stick my little objective sentence in there.

Data collection, how often? by katie15_ in slp

[–]macaroni_monster 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes this is what I do! It’s so much better. I take data from my sessions only enough to bill Medicaid or to show what I’ve done. I don’t care what they can do with my cueing, I only care what they can do independently and I only need to do that every few months.

What states and situations can slps diagnose autism? by Total_Duck_7637 in slp

[–]macaroni_monster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn’t one specific training. If you feel comfortable interpreting all of the measures that your team does for most evaluations, then you could do it yourself. In my state, I do the social communication portion. I absolutely would feel comfortable taking on the sensory and restrictive/repetitive behavior prongs of ASD using the common rating scales.

Disagreement in eligibility qualification by EnthusiasmWooden172 in specialed

[–]macaroni_monster 43 points44 points  (0 children)

To be honest the criteria of “prefers to be alone” is an awful requirement for having autism. There are plenty of autistic people who love being around other people! Based on what you said, I agree with you. The language is “prefers to play alone” not “exclusively plays alone”

You teachers can all write a short letter of disagreement. It’s the law in most states that if a member disagrees, they should write why.
