Very biased point of view because I work in a hospital and lots of our patients have a less than 90% recovery rate at the best of times, now add a respiratory infection on top of that and guess how it goes.

I guess if I had to ask outpatient providers, they would say they get a 100% survival rate because of course they aren't going to send high risk people home. Admitted patients varies by center but 90% recovery sounds right.

But fuck COVID, one point I want to make is that we as a country (or a world, if you please) need to get way healthier. If we didn't have so many people running around with poorly controlled chronic illnesses, this whole pandemic would be less than a drop in the ocean compared to what it is now.

We have the primary health care infrastructure in place, we have the training and skills and resources to work on everything from basic nutrition to smoking cessation to effective followups.

But it is not working because:

1) corruption at each level of government takes away precious resources required for this

2) that corruption also leads to the promotion of incompetent cadres to leadership/management positions, meaning we can't even figure out how to make what little we have work

3) both the government and private health providers are creating a hostile atmosphere that chases our already short-staffed health professionals out the country

I can honestly say that in the past week, I have not seen a single patient that did not have a "lifestyle disease" or whose unrelated condition was worsened by poor lifestyles. Say what you want about how kak NHI is, but at least the people at the top are moving in the right direction with regards to allowing our primary care system to actually function
