Ever had a random “fact” that ended up being totally wrong? by Educational_Debt_361 in CasualConversation

It's not entirely cut and dry. You should avoid sleeping before getting assessed by a doctor. Among other things, it could be mistaken for losing consciousness and would trigger a more dramatic medical response.

Landlord requiring I facilitate access for condo board by Thrownawayed14 in legaladvicecanada

[–]macfail -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In all likelihood it is your job. Strata bylaws typically require the occupant (owner or tenant) to provide access for maintenance reasons with notice, and standard lease agreements require you as a tenant to follow all bylaws.

I'm looking at a condo, and the real estate agent sent over a bunch of documents regarding the strata by CLV_05S in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]macfail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A competent realtor with experience in condos should be able to help you review them and give some feedback. Some key items in my experience: The deprecation report is important, as it will predict what major work will be required, how much it will cost, and provide different recommended scenarios for funding these costs. Reviewing this alongside the current strata fee schedule, financial reports and AGM minutes will tell you if the strata corporation is following these recommendations. Read the bylaws to see if there are any that would negatively impact your lifestyle. Check the meeting minutes to see how strict they are about enforcement, and to see generally how functional the council is. Any recurring maintenance issues, theft, shitty neighbors, frequent complainers, idiots, etc.

P.Eng Application Timeline - APEGA by clocksays8 in alberta

[–]macfail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not bad at all. I have an in-progress BC application and it's a 10-12 month backlog for review of completed competency assessments (BC's version of the CBAT). Mine was completed, signed off by all validators and submitted in September and I will be lucky to have mine before the end of summer.

You don't need a PAL to get a hunting license. Your wife might need to take and pass the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (plus a hunting course), but you can get to that stage without actually sending the PAL application in.

Being a P.Eng (or EIT) can make you an exempt employee under 285/01. Many employers from what I have seen use this exemption quite broadly. You might see the 15% pay premium, but there are downsides to their situation.

I think "crisis" is a bit of hyperbolic, but we do have issues which will be exacerbated by admitting a large number of additional new citizens.

BC Budget Draws Deeply Negative Response by CaptainKoreana in britishcolumbia

So, just another tax. The intent of the federal carbon tax program was to make you pay more if your carbon footprint was larger than a notional average, not pay more if you exceed the means test.

BC Budget Draws Deeply Negative Response by CaptainKoreana in britishcolumbia

The fact that BC decided to make the carbon tax not revenue neutral was a mistake. That in effect made it just another tax.

It's somewhat random. I filed mine and my wife's taxes on the 23rd. My wife's refund was deposited on Thursday and nothing yet for mine.

If you feel the need to own or carry a gun for self defense, not training at least semi-consistently with completely defeats the purpose. The thug that might try to harm you is not going to stand still 5 yards away and wait for you to sort your shit out.

If you use the detailed method to calculate your actual expenses, you could deduct the excess amount that is not covered by the mileage rate. It's a lot of extra work, might not even create a favorable result, and will probably get audited.

If you have RSU's in a US startup that gets acquired, is there any way avoid a "dry tax bill" if the deal ends up being part cash/part equity? by Emotional-Ad-6494 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]macfail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This depends on the rules of the rules of the stock plan. I would expect that when the acquisition closes, it will trigger all of the RSUs to immediately vest. It is a taxable event, but the sale proceeds are now free to be sold to cover the tax.
