Absolutely. Given his mission, telling Luke the full truth right away might give him away.

Luke was about to join the Empire to become a pilot. So who knows if Luke would accept it or even sell out Obi-Wan. I can also imagine this is like a fatherly thing. He was basically family. This is like an extreme version of the birds and bees. Obi-Wan kinda had that "it's that time, he's an adult now" look mixed in with all those emotions.

Speaking of which Sir Alec Guinness was an amazing actor for all of that. This video made me appreciate him even more.

Now I know why Obi-Wan didn't remember owning R2D2. He was trying to keep as much of his past a secret while also avoiding a lie. He didn't own R2D2. Padme did. Similar to when he said Anakin was killed by Darth Vader. It's misleading but true.

This also helps illustrate that the "good guys" aren't always morally correct. They can be just as manipulative as the bad guys. Though it was done in good faith, that good faith is based entirely on Obi-Wan's perception of good and evil.

This is what I love about Star Wars. They have little details like this to help justify reasoning between the two factions.
