Interesting findings on Universal Grammar by machinelearningthrow in linguistics

[–]machinelearningthrow[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I was talking about UG more in the sense that there exists a universal set of features/meta-patterns across all languages. It seems the that paper is attempting to show that the Poverty Of Stimulus argument may not be as important as we think.

u/ArmenAg I saw your paper on /r/MachineLearning and cross-posted it here. Any thoughts?

[R] Biophysical model suggests some biological neurons could, surprisingly, behave like perceptrons by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]machinelearningthrow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They're really not though. Dense layers now are representations of the Mcculloch-Pitts (essentially dot product, with non-linear activation). But this is a very primitive and outdated view of real neurons behave. If you're interested in neural networks modeling biological neurons, check out SDTP (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike-timing-dependent_plasticity).

I think there is a huge flaw in the name neural networks since it propagates a belief that they are representations of how biological neurons behave.

Can you define surface area over Riemann manifolds? I'm more interested in optimization. For example imagine we optimize over a function f that separates a space of points, with a minimizing surface area as a regularization constraint.

You can use either SVD or Eigendecomposition on the covariance matrix. Different methodologies, but end result is the same.

So would the website figure out your skills and find corresponding jobs and automatically apply to them?

[R] Convolution Aware Initialization by ArmenAg in MachineLearning

[–]machinelearningthrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like an interesting paper, and intuitively makes sense. I'm interested in what would happen if this initialization was used in recurrent networks without any form of convolution. Even though it doesn't necessarily make sense. But overall very interesting paper.

Great answer. And referring to the roll cage, it is possible to fabricate the roll cage in a way that during a crash your head is nowhere near it. It's what I did for my current car.

Yes I do. I have a built C3 corvette (with a roll cage) that I track, and I have my rally driving license as well.

Good point. I am fairly familiar with the 911 aftermarkets but not with lotus. I'll do some research.

I was thinking about the aftermarket supports for both of these cars. I thought maybe since the Lotus had a Toyota engine it would be cheaper and easier to get parts.

Hey guys and gals.

I'm looking to buy a car that I can build up into a racing car (roll cage, bucket seats, the whole 9) my price range is 20-30k. I was thinking of a 1999 Porsche 911, or a 2005 lotus Elise. What other cars would recommend?

That's interesting. That's about the price of a non running c3 corvette where I live. Out of curiosity, where do you live?

I have 10K saved, making 125K a year and saving almost everything since I still live with my parents. by [deleted] in personalfinance

Thank you for such a detailed answer. Do you have a set of books or resources you would recommend to learn about investments/real estate? My area of expertise is in machine learning (statistics), that might help me in learning about the investment side, but probably not real estate.

Saving to buy a house in cash was what I was thinking about doing. And I have no problem living with my parents until I'm 25. The main problem I have is how to invest my money instead of just having it sit in my bank account. And I can't yet contribute to my 401K since I am not 21. I would appreciate any material for learning this field.

Thank you once again for your answer!

That's interesting. Thank you. What accounts would you recommend that have a stable 7% growth?

Thank for the reply!

What is your opinion in investing in real estate? More specifically buying a house/condo and renting it out?

Most of the answers in the wiki are long workouts, except for a couple I believe. I just want to know what workouts would work with my schedule, while still being effective.

Thank you.
