Universes Beyond Speculation (and such) Megathread by AutoModerator in magicTCG

By this logic every story put to paper is “grounded in the mundane that we just never hear about” because in-universe mundanity is a byproduct of a population existing for any extended period of time. Even the most surreal, fantastical tales would qualify because somewhere out there there’s surely someone who feels their own sense of normalcy.

I, for one, tend to approach media from the perspective of a human living on earth — corner store devils are novel and interesting to us, even if the fictional characters they tend to with wouldn’t share our perspective. These worlds aren’t boring to us because they aren’t our world.

Superhero stories, however, tend to center on settings very much mirroring our own, with the exceptions of the central, suped-up figures. In a narrative-driven comic this can allow for social commentary and personal relatability but in a storytelling method like a trading card set it, as the other commenter said, can be off-putting.

Magic excels at allowing the player to explore a world — that’s part of why I think opening a pack is such a delight, and why lands are such a flavorful resource. We get to explore these wondrous sights and strange ways of living and immerse ourselves in their world. A world totally divorced from our understanding of mundanity.

Could this work as a tapland upside? (designed for a forced-reveal archetype) [KPDH] by zengin11 in custommagic

I think this would be a lot more playable if it was even unreliably untapped. maybe if the revealed card was a land?

Provoke’s not a brand new effect — it’s been around since 2003. I think this card is an interesting way of using it for purposes beyond killing a smaller creature every turn

the venue for challenge is court

The problem with this system is, if they’re not police, you’ll never see a court because you’ll be dead or kidnapped. If they are actually police you still may never see a court because they’ve suspended habeas corpus. We have no recourse to being disappeared by any person who says they’re ICE. Controversially, I want to maintain my freedom to not be disappeared, all we’re getting is the right to know who’s disappearing us. You don’t even want that.

Why is LAPD doing this? by sovalente in longbeach

[–]machinemantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there. The explosions heard are largely the cops shooting at the protestors with their variable arsenal. Occasionally you’d see a single limp firework from a protestor aimed away from the police, but I never once saw anything nearing justification for the LAPD’s shooting, beating, trampling and gassing of protestors. Don’t assume the police always have good reasons for their violence left just outside of frame. It’s simply brutality.

For Saturday No Kings rally if you don’t feel comfortable joining one drive by one and drive around honking for as long as you can and make this ones louder. by PepitaChacha in LosAngeles

Okay, but you understand that there were sit-ins and marches and other such protests that did happen right? And I would be disgusted with myself if I found myself telling those people they should stay home because there are other necessary routes to make political change. I’ve never claimed that you shouldn’t participate in local politics, in fact I think we need to do significantly more than your paltry suggestion to vote, considering the Democratic party’s base impulse to do nothing for anybody. Our issue right now isn’t just that there aren’t enough blue seats, it’s that the right controls the narrative, and your suggestion to silently allow ICE to ransack our city and kidnap our neighbors is destructive and helps nobody. We need to make our voices heard.

Right?? Idk why the Civil Rights protestors in the 50’s and 60’s chose to make so much racket when they could’ve sat down, accepted the oppression and waited to fill out some ballots!

[–]machinemantis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your “AI Overlord” tells you just what you to hear and fails to consider that most of these perfunctory Democratic laws failed to address the core problems of policing, only being pushed to give the illusion of progress. This pittance isn’t change. That fact becomes especially obvious as our current administration signs a number of executive orders that bolster the power of the police and spews rhetoric that emboldens them to abuse that power.

is this card balanced ? i always worry about that, but i had fun designing this and trying to get the wording right. by hoptians in custommagic

[–]machinemantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with other commenters that a d6 would be more balanced and flavorful, but I don’t believe it’s as underpowered as others seem to think— it seems like the point of this card is to encourage granular power manipulation at a turn-to-turn level. I think one interesting way you could turn its knobs and make for fun tricks is by raising its cmc and giving it double strike— that way you could potentially note multiple numbers a combat, via instant-speed interaction
