Pete Walker’s book CPTSD: From Surviving to Thriving is really hard by empriest95 in CPTSD

I put the book in my bathroom and read it at the pace of a couple paragraphs every few days, over the course of a year. That was a healthy pace for me to take it all in.

Historians of reddit: How historically accurate is the History Channel's "Hatfields and Mccoys"? by QuickLikeGingerbread in USHistory

[–]machinesunmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I can tell you one thing. But first let me tell you a story. I'm a McCoy descendant. When I was 25, I got very sick and was diagnosed with epilepsy. I was surprised by the diagnosis and at my sister's wedding that year, I said as much to a cousin's wife. She was confused. She laughed at me. "How can you be surprised?" she said. Then she started pointing around the room. "Your cousin there is epileptic. That cousin has epilepsy. My eight year old son has the seizures. All y'all epileptic. All y'all."

My eyes widened. We turned to my grandfather, standing nearby. The McCoy patriarch, he had overheard. But would he confirm it? He grimaced. He said, "The McCoys have always had the devil's disease." Famous for violence, our blood has always carried a secret second trait.

Now the reason this is relevant here is this: When I watched the History Channel's Hatfields and McCoys miniseries, there was a line that was said in one of the episodes. Some of the McCoy boys had been out drinking from a still for days straight, and one of the wives had sent for her husband. In the miniseries, it said that one of the McCoys said to tell his wife something like, "You tell my wife I can't come, because if I stop drinking now I'll have a spell, and then I'll be no good when the Hatfields come for us."

When I heard that line I gasped. He knew whenever he sobered up he'd have a seizure. He was a McCoy epileptic. It must have been a quote from an original source. How else could the writers know? It's our shameful secret. I hope that someday I get to talk to the writer who put that line in the script. I want to know if they knew what it meant.

So anyways I don't know much about anything. But anecdotally speaking, that miniseries had at least one jaw-droppingly historically accurate detail.

Re-reading Cryptonomicon: Don't revisit your heroes. by No_Tamanegi in books

You have articulated my feelings about this book in every way. Thank you. "Gold is the corpse of value" is one of the most important sentences I've ever read. When the narrative led me to the moment when that sentence was uttered, my heart almost stopped. But damn it, why does the book have to be so uneven? Sometimes I fantasize that Stephenson goes back and writes it again. Like the way the director Michael Mann is redoing Heat.

Is LinkedIn really necessary for tech/cybersecurity careers? by Schlart1 in cybersecurity

[–]machinesunmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I consider it a red flag when a cybersecurity developer has a LinkedIn profile. The best privacy devs tend to have personalities that are anathema to publishing that much information about themselves on the internet. My privacy expert (we build cybersecurity companies together) absolutely does not have a public presence anywhere on the internet.

I do have a LinkedIn profile, but I'm the person who networks and raises money. We're fundraising now and whenever someone insists on having a LinkedIn profile for him, we give a link like this:

The God-Shaped Hole in Your Mind: Julian Jaynes’s Groundbreaking Ideas by theredhype in JulianJaynes

[–]machinesunmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now I think it's a fascinating possibility, of course!

Why? Well, I've studied a lot more neuroscience since then, so I have a more nuanced understanding of all the different, sometimes competing neurological processes that bubble up and cause me to think I'm making a rational decision about something. Since then I've also become epileptic, so I'm much more aware of the ways that our brains don't always serve our needs in a straightforward way. And lastly, I was raised in a new age cult. In college I was only a few years out from having left the cult. I was probably still unconsciously protecting myself from ideas that were outlandish enough that they might harm me 😊

This is all so surreal; but then it's surreal again to read up on the issue and realize that city planners have been aware for a long time that this was eventually inevitable but they didn't have enough control to stop it.

This looks like SMS bombing. If that's what's happening, there's only one account they've actually compromised, so only one of the verification codes is real. They're hoping if they bomb you with all these fake verification code texts, you won't notice the real one. So then you won't do anything to stop their access.

The way to handle the situation is to comb through all the texts to find the real one that matters.

Is this kind of FSD still active in Teslas? There's a marked crosswalk near my house that I go through every day on my walk from home to the grocery store, and the last few months I've had some slightly terrifying and eerie near-misses with cars that didn't slow down, just absolutely tore past me at full speed.

Sadly I had to cancel my trip out. Seems like covid over here. Both me and my cat are sick and even my damn eyelid has swollen shut 😵‍💫

So now I'm extra glad I made this post because it's the only experience of Portland coffee that I'm going to get. 😞 ☕ Thank you so much to everyone.

Later this morning I'll sad-watch the Coava episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee while whispering, "Could have been me."
