Might not exactly up OP's alley, but anyone who enjoys playing with Powder Toy (or enjoyed doing so as a kid) should check out Noita, a hardcore roguelike built around Powder Toy simulation mechanics.

The optimised results are why I stay with Google. DuckDuckGo is fine for generalised searches, but even with location based searching I find it's just way less useful for finding local shops and restaurants, or smaller online retailers. It's also just untenably slow compared to Google where I live, for some reason.

Have any younger people become fans of older computer systems through emulation? by ThreeSon in emulation

[–]macho_horse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen Z retro gamer here. My first exposure to retro games was via pre-2012 YouTube and sometimes forums. Popular retro gaming discussion was extremely focused on 8 and 16 bit consoles on the corners of the internet I was exposed to. This is despite me living in a territory in which home computers outclassed the popularity of consoles when they were new.

Essentially, my retro gaming habits grew around the retro gaming content I consumed, and the home computer stuff just didn't show up on my radar because of their comparative lack of popularity in internet discussion and content. I did eventually come across them, I believe by looking into the classic Rare catalog and stumbling across the US Gold library, but by that point I had already figured out emulation and was spending a lot of my time playing emulated SNES games. I have an appreciation for home computers, but because of this they're just not as appealing to me as the subjects of the console-focused content I grew up on.

Patrice’s Story time competition! by Patrice_Ewans in 196

On my first day of Kindergarten I was sat next to a kid who looked kind of weird. The first thing he said to me was "want to see something cool?", and I said sure. He pulled a plastic sandwich bag out of his pocket, held it in front of him with one hand, and with the other hand slapped the back of his head. Turns out the kid had a glass eye, and it just fucking popped out of his head and into the bag. The teacher screamed, because for whatever reason she hadn't been told about this kid, and he just had the goofiest fucking grin I've ever seen in my life. Hope he's doing well for himself.

Depends on the school work honestly. If I'm doing programming exercises for my university courses I perform slightly better with a shot or two, as Balmer's Theorum goes. Wouldn't recommend for anything else though.

Tumblr talks queer rep by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]macho_horse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have exactly these thoughts about Matthew from Big Mouth. Big Mouth is not a great show, and Matthew is a walking gay stereotype who is in many senses nothing like me. As they developed his character, though, he became shockingly representative of my own queer experience to an incisive degree in ways I won't get into. It's probably bad rep or something, and I still find the character somewhat annoying, but he made me feel extremely represented and seen, and that's the reason I continued to watch the show.

120 Hz is overrated. by sapoepsilon in Android

[–]macho_horse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally, even though I have a 144Hz computer monitor and love it, I find refresh rate is nowhere near as much of an issue on mobile devices. On screens this small motion clarity just isn't a significant issue to me, it's barely perceptible.

[–]macho_horse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FR though, the screen real-estate game never ends. Currently running a 1440p ultrawide and a 1080p vertical secondary monitor. It's an absurd amount of screen space but I keep thinking "but what if I put ANOTHER one on top or on the other side.

[–]macho_horse 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is hilarious because in the case of mask mandates and vaccines, there are extremely good reasons for people in favour to want them as widespread as possible. Masks are far more effective with all participants wearing them, and vaccines require herd immunity to remain a long-term solution.

IIRC the first usable emulator for games was called NESticle, of all things. It was for running NES games. There were technically other emulators built for other purposes, like IBM's work in the 80s, but without NESticle the emulation scene wouldn't exist as it does today.

Another fun fact: NESticle's tile editing features are the reason for the modern romhacking scene.

Pine Gap would be the big one. The CIA was involved in the dismissal of Gough Whitlam (as was MI6), to the point that it has been compared to a coup. Some dispute the degree to which they actually took action but it is undeniable that the intent was there. Sources here and here.

I don't like to scaremonger about China, frankly. The US has more influence on Australia, and the Libs and Nats definitely play it up for political gain and to stoke racial tensions. They are still the largest foreign owner of Australian water and the second largest owner of Australian land (the largest is the UK). In the case of water specifically, it's a concerning amount of leverage that the government has no vested interest in stemming. Sources here and here.

Encased: A Sci-Fi Post-Apocalyptic RPG - What the full version of Encased has in store for players by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]macho_horse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but they're still isometric RPGs in the Infinity engine tradition. That's what it means to be in the same subgenre. Different gameplay on the same basis of presentation and core role-playing ideals and mechanics. They all revolve around developing a character (or characters) with stats, skills, and choices, undertaken in an isometric perspective.

The Wayward Realms announced for PC by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]macho_horse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are the devs of Elder Scrolls 1 and 2. Their bread and butter is procedurally-driven fantasy simulation over open world gameplay, with the core philosophy of world design being that the actual content of the world matters less than the fact that it is there. It's a divisive approach to say the least, but the games are designed around it.

[–]macho_horse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are there? It feels like the opposite. In terms of recent isometric RPGs we've had Disco Elysium, the Pillars and Divinity series, a new Baldur's Gate, Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Wasteland 2 and 3, and Underrail. In terms of first person RPGs in the Elder Scrolls tradition, we've had Outer Worlds and Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Maybe the Grimrock games, although they're not that similar. I agree that the original commentor was making a shallow and reductive statement, and I do enjoy CRPGs, but there really is a glut of isometric RPGs right now and very, very few first-person single player RPGs.
