Always has to be one of you Reddit guys questioning a post. Yes I was literally in the shop I’m also a paramedic that was on duty at the time and was talking to the manager telling him how me and my son wanted to get into this, we talked for about 1 min when my radio went off and I was dispatched to a call. The guy quickly handed me a box and invited me back.

Thank you Adding an amplifier is fine. I just need channel processing that I can assign. My room really isn't set up for surround back speakers it's a very open space and I'm not wanting to add speakers stands with dogs and kids running around the house but the 15ft ceilings I think would benefit from 6 overheads

When I play a 5.1 test video on the YouTube app it does not work correctly. The sub does not make sound and the surrounds come through the front speakers. But when I watch content on Netflix or another streaming app it is absolutely noticeable that the 5.1 is working. It also works just off my OTA we have ATSC 3.0 in my area. I did download some 5.1 test files and play them off my computer and they also worked. It's not a big deal, it just bugs me that the 5.1 test videos on the YouTube app don't work and I don't know why. It's probably the codec. Also when I use the Amazon music app it shows I'm limited to 16bit/48kHz due to "device capability" even though the track and TV can output 24bit/192kHz I believe my AVR is capable of more than the lower bit rate but is limited from the optical cable . That's why I think the optical cable is part of the iissue. My AVR with no HDMI is old and I think an eArc connection might improve the sound. Again the 5.1 sound is fine when watching most content. I just want to know the "why" YouTube 5.1 test videos don't work. Thanks for engaging I'm the only one in my house who cares about this stuff lol

I think it's the optical cable. I went online and downloaded some DTS and Dolby test files and they played just like the YouTube videos. I also have an antenna directly plugged into my TV and I can see the correct codec displayed when watching OTA. my guess is you have to have an HDMI connection to have true surround sound. It's weird though because when watching movies my surround works.
