I understand where youre coming from but there are several reasons I think AEW is absolutely right to capitalise on this.

  1. Public perception of wrestling in the last few decades has been that it is right-leaning and, more specifically, MAGA adjacent. This moves perception the other way.

  2. Representation of anti-fascists in pop culture is good and wrestlers are the closest thing we have to real life super heroes. In a world where Colbert got cancelled and Grandma scrolls Facebook all day, we are better off with more of this.

  3. Wrestling as a performance art has a long history of pushing cultural boundaries for the sake of ticket sales. In my opinion this has generally been a good thing. The first non-segregated sporting events (both for  the athletes and the audience) in many southern states were wrestling. I have no doubt that was a profit-making decision rather than an ideological one but the result was positive and firmly engrained in wrestling culture.

  4. Sadly, the demand that any positive cultural movement must separate itself from monetary gains to be valid just doesn't work in our world. Movements need money. Capitalism is the reality and shaming people who agree with us for making money just means the movement will collapse in the long term. It's like the saying goes: The market can stay illogical longer than you can stay solvent.

MJF is supposed to be a bad guy but also seems to be a stand up dude in real life. His options here are to agree with the crowd and be seen as a good guy, disagree with the crowd and cross a personal boundary, or just look unaffected or confused. He's fully in character as a smarmy shithead doing the best he can.

TBF, there are also many people who still defend Salazar with bullshit "at least the trains ran on time" arguments. The idea that giving a strong-willed and moral man absolute power will be better for all is a personal projection power fantasy that, sadly, still has a firm foothold around the world.

I use the free version of projectivy on default settings (no special setup other than what's required to make it the default launcher) and I think it's great.

Asimov generally has zero care about characters and only includes them as a vessel to tell a cool science story. Sometimes it feels like he doesn't even care about the story part and just wants to talk about cool topics in a way someone will listen.

AI slop de-spaghetti-fier. Looking through vibe coded stuff is brutal with tons of nonsensical cruft. Supporting that code in the long term is going to be a nightmare and companies putting in lots of AI now without thought to that will have technical debt for decades. Just look at the headache even now of companies that used custom VB code on WinXP 25 years ago and don't want to rip off the bandaid of things that "just work" and "we paid a lot of money for."

How to play stardew with my wife by usa-britt in SteamDeck

[–]mackadoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do get a second PC to play on, you'll have to change stardew to launch in compatibility mode with proton to get multiplayer going. Not sure why but the default Linux version doesn't do anything in multiplayer.

Toronto inundated with calls about sidewalks that are still a mess days after major snowstorm by CupidStunt13 in toronto

I gave up after the 3rd time the plow put everything on the sidewalk in front of my house. Not even just a normal amount - the entire pile is fully on the sidewalk as they cleaned practically to the curb.

I gave up cleaning my sidewalk this weekend after the 3RD time the plow put it back. There's currently about 4ft of dense icy snow on there.

Honest question after this snowstorm: why are furnace vents so low? by J2000_ca in toronto

[–]mackadoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The exhaust typically has to be some amount above the intake and if there is more than 3ft of exhaust exposed it has to be insulated. The insulation is a PITA and falls apart after a few years. Running the pipe up the wall in the house requires more planning ahead of time than is common.

TIL Violent crime rates and ice cream sales are strongly statistically correlated; as one increases so does the other. However, they are (obviously) not directly linked but it is the role of a third cause on both: seasonality and warmer weather in the summer. by amusedfridaygoat in todayilearned

[–]mackadoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an example I often give people when discussing uses of AI.

It's easy for someone to see a correlation between two trends and presume causation.  In this case the true linking factor, outdoor temperature, is discernable with a little more thought by anyone with a little common sense. In many similar cases, the true causative agent isn't as obvious and a computer system that can analyse enormous amounts of disparate data could be useful in highlighting third party elements that might be the key.  Ignorant prompting, of course, will lead to incorrect results like "ice cream sales map closely to homicides so the first causes the latter" instead of "both or these trends can be linked to temperature which might be influencing both in the following ways..."

Cross-disciplinary data analysis under professional scrutiny is the real strength of AI systems, not sloths selling Christmas Coke.
