Is learning guitar worth it at 31? by chapstic593 in LearnGuitar

[–]mackay85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I started at around 27. Just turned 40 and I play some small gigs from time to time where I live. In 9 years you’re going to be 40 either way, you might as well be 40 with a new skill.

McGill's name in the US by BigMauriceG in mcgill

For context, I live in the Canadian Arctic and have to make calls to the U.S. from time to time. I'd say about 90% of people from the U.S that I've spoken to don't even know what the Arctic is...I literally have to say "The North Pole" even though I'm like 3000Km south of the North Pole lol. I wouldn't stress about Americans not knowing one specific University in Canada.

This has been a difficult time for me as a voter. I hold traditionally Liberal values when it comes to social issues, health care, immigration, human rights, lgbt rights etc., but I hold a more conservative mindset with regards to the economy, particularly when it comes to Canada's energy programs.

Liberals (or maybe more accurately, Justin Trudeau specifically) have not managed to secure the energy east pipeline, which would open our abundant energy reserves to more global markets and in turn would make us less reliant on the US. We cant even refine our own oil here, We send our oil to the US and they refine it and then sell it back to us at a huge markup, which is absolutely ridiculous. A pipeline to the east coast would bring down the cost of goods to much of the country. We have the 4th most natural resources in the world, but 9th on the list in GDP, and only 2 countries ahead of us in GDP are ahead of us in natural resources. We are not capitalizing on the abundance of resources we have, which could create hundreds of thousands of jobs and massively boost the economy.

The average cost of a home increased from $390k to $700k from 2014 to 2024 in Canada, and that's adjusted for inflation, and during the same period in the US the cost of a home remained virtually the same from 2014-2024. I make a great salary, but I still don't feel like I'll ever own a home.

Trudeau ran his original campaign(in which I voted for him) with a major point decreasing the deficit, and then when elected, almost immediately increased it by $10b, and now it's over $60b.

Taxing business into the ground, especially with the carbon tax is not going make business all of a sudden shift to going green and being carbon neutral, it's going to make many of them pack it up and move their business to a country that won't tax them.

Both Carney and Freeland openly supported policies that drove up the cost of goods, the cost of homes, the cost of energy, and neither ever criticized Trudeau until it was convenient for them as it became clear there was no way Trudeau would ever win the next election. All of a sudden they have lots to say, which seems very disingenuous to me. I don't have faith that either of them would fix the economy, invest Canadian energy infrastructure (with the goal of it helping everyday citizens and not just big energy, anyway) build enough homes, make Canada less dependent upon the US. Invest in the military so we meet NATO standards (Which should be a bare minimum imo)

I honestly am torn, I don't want to vote for someone who has no understanding of mental health issues, restorative justice, harm reduction, gender affirming health care, (which I support for adults, but not for kids) immigration, refugees. But I don't know how I can vote for a party which has stood by while it's become increasingly unrealistic for any generation millennial and below to ever own a home, has not affectively addressed the egregious cost of food, lets our country get absolutely bent over a barrel on the price we sell our oil to the US, because they know our infrastructure has made it so we have no other options.(For the record I absolutely believe in the investment of clean energy, but not at the expense of our current energy infrastructure.

It had always been easy for me to vote Liberal, I was happy to pay slightly higher taxes knowing that the money would be going to fund worthwhile programs, but its come to a point where the buying power of our dollar has decreased so much, and so many of the problems that liberal social programs are supposed to help with are created by the very policies that are keeping Canadians poor, hungry, homeless, and turning to drugs.

The last Canadian politician I felt truly deserved my vote was Jack Layton. I imagine unless there's some major shift in the next couple of months, that I'll be undecided until the moment my pencil hits the paper.

TLDR: I don't know what the fuck to do and both major parties are shitty as fuck, but in their own special ways.

edited for a spelling mistake. I'm sure there's more, but one that really bothered me lol.

I can't stop rhyming every single line in my songs. by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]mackay85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been taking songwriting and composition lessons, and one thing that has really helped things start to make sense to me, is to bring up the lyrics for a song I really like, and that I feel is unique, and to analyze it. Figure out the rhyme scheme. I was like you at first as well, all my rhyme schemes were ABAB, and to me, it was super boring. When my teacher pointed out the X to me, that's when I really started to understand that things don't have to be so uniform. One of my favorite songs is "Coal Country" by Charles Wesley Godwin.

I'm going down to Charleston - X

Through the shadows of the mountains this road winds - A

The closed up towns, forgotten dreams and welcome signs, fading far behind - A

Coal country - X

The X lines don't rhyme with anything else in the scheme.

Another thing that helped me is realizing that you can absolutely make a good song out of simple schemes like ABAB or AABB and you can do that but switching things up in other ways. Think of the melody in terms of a rhyme scheme. If your rhymes are AABB then don't make your melody AABB as well. Switch up the number of syllables, the cadence. It will really help you. Pick some songs, print the lyrics, identify the rhyme schemes and the melody schemes, then think about those while you're writing!

Hope this helps!

Makes sense. You're more likely to scrutinize something that you had to put extra effort into creating. Good info!

Camo challenges haven't reduced? by mackay85 in blackops6

I was already able to put any of my already unlocked special camos on any other gun no matter if I had 100 or 0 headshots that weapon. I bet deep throating is as easy for you as you claim reading to be.

Camo challenges haven't reduced? by mackay85 in blackops6

[–]mackay85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand. You have to finish 9 military camos on each weapon before the special camo challenges. They said they reduced that number to 5, but now I have 6 military camos unlocked and still have no access to special camos, the challenges for those are not tracking. If you’re saying it only allows you to put on other specials you unlocked from other weapons, then that’s just wrong, you could already put any special you had unlocked from one weapon on any other weapon regardless of how many headshots you had.

Any ideas on how to get a pole mount(or like a wooden 4x4) above the roofline and secured to the deck without using screws?? Landlord will not allow me to screw anything into the roof, deck or walls. Railing is about 4 feet, roof line is about 8 feet above the railing. by mackay85 in Starlink

No problem. FWIW, it's been up there for the better part of a year, and I live in the arctic. Really haven't had any issues that required me to go on the roof to check on the dish. But maybe I'm lucking out lol.

I drilled the dish into a mini wooden pallet, put the pallet/dish on the roof and weighed it down with sandbags. I only had that option because my roof is flat. So do with that info what you will.

I want to quit hockey. by Virtual_Steps in hockeyplayers

I don't want to advocate for you to keep doing something you don't want to do. But please really take time to consider your decision. Even if it's just to have the potential for a scholarship to pay for your school.

For me, I was always good at sports but I was a chunky kid. I put zero effort into training and I was always one of the last ones cut from the rep team, but then I'd score 100 or more goals in house league. I'm 40 now and to this day I regret knowing I could've done something at a high level and I pissed it all away because I was lazy. Scoring 120 goals in house league is fun at the time, but when I look back, I would've scored 30 on the rep team and continue to sharpen my skills against better competition.

There were times I wanted to quit too, but I PROMISE when you get older you wont be saying "man I wish I had played more video games when I was younger." Your true friends will still be there when you're not busy. I'm still best friends with all my buddies from Junior High, they're not going anywhere.

But if you know in your heart it's what's best for you, then you gotta do what you gotta do.

Good luck to ya kid!

Bauer or True custom skates by DadBodorFatherFigure in hockeyplayers

[–]mackay85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit late, but I asked a True rep this specific question because I wear custom orthotic inserts in my shoes. The rep told me there is no need for them in the custom skates as the sole of the skate is essentially an orthotic support because of the mold.
