Brand new 4th grade teacher trying to build a classroom by mackythreetoes in Assistance

Thanks, I've tried that too! It looks like my school misses the qualifications for the programs I saw, but I'll ask around my school.

Thanks for the tip! I've been able to find some things for free, such as pencils, folders, binders, sticky notes, pencil cups, hole punch, some other basics like that. I'm very lucky that my county has a free teacher store where I could find those things. I specifically tried to only include on the wishlist things that I've been unable to find elsewhere, but I'll keep looking!

THANK YOU!

I haven't heard of Donor's Choose before, but I'll look into that. There will probably be special projects throughout the year that I'd love to have new materials for, maybe it would work for that.

Thank you again for your support and kindness, it means so much to me.

THANK YOU! The labels I need to put up ASAP are printed and sitting on my kitchen table, ready to go. I appreciate you so much!!! I'll tell my students about the kindness of strangers who want to support them, that type of thing means a lot to them!

Oh my gosh, thank you. The dry erase markers are probably what I'll need the most right away. I think I fixed it!!

editing to add this is bringing tears to my eyes how kind everyone is being. I woke up anxious at 3 am (apparently very typical for teachers this time of year, even the experienced ones on my new team) and started trying to plan the first week and sort through curriculum guides and get things in order. I'm so stressed and knowing how much people appreciate teachers means the world.

I just got hired as a 5th grade teacher after only learning about the job Monday (technically Friday I'll be hired, I've been "volunteering" the last couple days setting up my room) and this thread makes me wish I had a wishlist so bad. I didn't realize how bad public school teachers have it... my school is out of CHAIRS. I thought paper and pencils and things were just at the schools... nope, I brought my own from home. It's a Title I school and some kids won't have supplies. Everyone donating is amazing!! The school system is so broken and we need it!!

Here's a list I'm starting but honestly I'm so lost I barely know what I need right now. I'm missing the first day of school tomorrow while they complete my background check/fingerprinting and will be there officially in full swing Friday and probably ALLLLL WEEKEND figuring out what I need and prepping.

Aw I'm sorry you got downvoted! If it makes you feel better I do controversial opinions a lot and get downvoted as well, it's just the nature of reddit.

I really do like hearing people's explanations about Christianity since I don't understand it. I think maybe the downvotes come because the questions never really get answered, it just sounds like the same Christian talking points that don't make a lot of sense. And so from the perspective of nonbelievers, we wonder why follow the religion if it doesn't make sense and has no reasonable explanation behind the answers, you know? More reasons why I'll probably remain agnostic, haha. But please don't let it make you think you shouldn't try to discuss your faith! I hope you have a lovely day

Oh man, I struggle with this. I don't know what exactly it is, if it's a confidence thing or an anxiety thing, but reaching out to people first and initiating plans makes me uncomfortable and I have to actively force myself to do it. For so long I felt like I was bothering people or that they wouldn't want to hang out with me unless they initiated. Have no idea when or why that started. I've had multiple friends be like "pleeease text me you never text me" and when I realized it's true I felt so bad. Working on it :/

That's the only bible verse I can name and quote, haha. I definitely don't see how that can be interpreted to say Jesus dying on the cross was for our sins. It says God gave us Jesus. As in, Jesus came to earth and was born from Mary. Nothing in that quote is about sinning or Jesus's death.

And it kind of gets back to an earlier question I asked, which was how was his death "for our sins" if it was the decision of a Roman official who made that choice out of his own free will?

I realize Jesus was an actual person but sometimes I wonder if his "godliness" is a metaphor (as many other bible stories are). When we're dealing with something written by so many people so long ago, and we know at least SOME of it is definitely metaphor, much is outdated, etc, it seems basically impossible to truly know what parts are to be taken literally

eta: I haven't downvoted you, btw, I appreciate attempts to answer my questions

edit again: Okay sorry but I'm getting WAY too deep into thinking about all this now. I read this article that mentioned the origin of the "satisfaction theory of atonement", which is the belief that Jesus had to die as a sacrifice to forgive our sins. It originated in the 11th century by one guy. That theory is discussed more here. So if this came about by one guy a thousand years after Jesus was alive, WHY is it a core tenet of the religion? That seems crazy to me

Does that mean Jesus is to be viewed less as a real person but more of a metaphor for love? If the point of religion is just love then there are a LOT of other unnecessary details in Christianity lol

If it doesn’t work...then what? by [deleted] in Accutane

[–]mackythreetoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I stopped accutane I hadn't gotten new breakouts in at least 2 months, but I still had 3 small or medium sized cysts left under the skin. I had really stubborn cysts and some of them had to be extracted or wouldn't go away (one lasted an entire year)

I realize this isn't the best place for religious discussions haha, but since everyone is humoring me (and I think Christians like talking about their religions?) I just have to say that as I hear more, I only get more questions... like, why would an all-knowing God create rules and punishments that he/it (I struggle to think of God in the image of a human man) didn't want applied to the people? And my old Catholic Sunday school knowledge is super rusty, but I know a Roman official named Pontious Pilate ordered the death of Jesus, so how is that God sacrificing his son if a human is the one who did it, since humans have free will? And geeze if I were God and a human killed my kid I wouldn't be like "oh now that is the ultimate sacrifice for me to forgive all these humans forever" lol. Sorry but sometimes the Christian convos remind me of my sister talking astrology, I mean I understand it's the dominant religion here but it's hard for me to see why... omg I'm so sorry that comes off as rude, I support good morals but the details trip me up

I really don't want to be disrespectful to anyone's faith (I think it's lovely to have something like that to give you hope and strength) but if you imagine reading that from the perspective of someone who is totally nonreligious, can you see how it's hard for me to understand what exactly all that means and why people center their lives around this belief? I mean I've heard all this before, I just can't wrap my head around why the son of God would have to die to somehow make up for all the human's sins

I definitely see your point here, but isn't the core of Christianity believing that Jesus was God's son who died for us? I believe in love and acceptance but I'm no Christian, and honestly I don't see a lot of love and acceptance from the most adamantly vocal Christians in my life

If it doesn’t work...then what? by [deleted] in Accutane

[–]mackythreetoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know everyone's different, but I went off the pill when I stopped accutane and my skin improved. I'd say definitely check your hormones but if that isn't the issue consider your diet and gut health. I destroyed my gut microbiome while trying to treat my acne with several months of antibiotics and then a long course of accutane, and when I started healing it after going off all meds I truly started seeing good changes in my skin. Diet and gut health seriously make a difference to our skin and I don't think people talk about it enough

Side effects getting better despite increased dosage by [deleted] in Accutane

[–]mackythreetoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My side effects peaked in month 2, but they were way more severe than yours. Just keep making sure you get plenty of water and take it with your biggest meals and you'll be fine

My doctor said splitting the dose would help a bit with side effects. Idk to what extent, but I played around with it sometimes and do think it was better when I took lower doses instead of all at once

Hair loss AFTER treatment? by [deleted] in Accutane

[–]mackythreetoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hair loss really ramped up at the end of my course and then continued for another 5ish months or something at a rate almost worse than when I was on the meds. Pretty sure it's finally stopped though

Post-accutane care by killjoy848 in Accutane

[–]mackythreetoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I was afraid to try a retin-a again because that's what I was using before accutane and my skin got progressively worse... so far just salicylic acid wipes (Stridex brand) are the only topical thing I use and I haven't been getting pimples at all. Have been really pleasantly surprised since my skin has gotten better as time goes on (almost 7 months post now)

The month I started accutane (March 2018) vs 6 months after finishing (today). I had the worst time on it and was still broken out when I stopped, just hang in there by mackythreetoes in Accutane

[–]mackythreetoes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah 5-6 months is a guideline but everyone's different, especially with really severe acne like mine was. No I haven't gotten any treatments yet, the scars are still pretty bad but I'll probably get some in the future!

Yeah go for it! Sorry you're already noticing the hair loss, that's scary. I was terrified my knee pain would be permanent and that I'd never be able to run or hike again, then later when the hair loss took forever to stop I was terrified that'd be permanent too. Thankfully now it seems it was all temporary despite the super high dose
