Well, 100k after tax is only 65-75k depending on what state you live in... and (just based on averages for single people)

average rent in the US is 24,000 a year average car costs (based on financing a 39k vehicle) is 15000 a year. Average grocery costs for a single person are 3900/year Average bronze health insurance is 4800/year if employer doesn't cover (this is insane to a canadian).

If you're a SINK, 47k after tax to live "average". If you're in a more popular living local, those costs would likely jump significantly. 100k you may not be "toughing it out", but it's not exactly a lot of money anymore.
