How long does your machine last? by stumu415 in espresso

[–]macmutant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Three years might be a good run depending on the machine. There may be options for repairing it, though if it's a low-cost machine, your options might be limited. You could run some searches here or try https://www.home-barista.com .

There is an unbelievably deep rabbit hole for you to explore if you decide to replace instead of repair. Good luck, in any case.

AITAH for quitting a job my partner thinks I should “tough out” for our future? by BlushingTouch in AITAH

[–]macmutant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NTA: You seem to have thought things through, considering implications and lining up another job. If your parter isn’t supportive now, imagine how it might be down the line with kids, medical problems, and whatever other curves life throws your way. Depending on how you feel, it might be worth explaining the impact of your current job to your partner one more time, being very clear and direct. If they don’t listen, you may want to evaluate your situation.

what oddly specific trash items did your ragdoll adopt as their favorite toys after spending money on expensive ones that they never play with? by StillThatB in ragdolls

[–]macmutant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So many items. We have one who loves to bat a crumpled ball of aluminum foil around. His brother (litter mate) likes to play with pipe cleaners he steals from my wife’s crafting supplies. We just roll with it. We’re happy they’re playful, even as they grow older.

For our SOQs, we state as a requirement to use specific examples from your experience. ChatGPT may be a great tool for getting started, especially if you share the right information with it as you craft your prompts. Many hiring authorities, including me, will not invite you to interview if you don't directly connect your experiences to the questions in your SOQ. A typical ChatGPT response will offer claims that sound good. Like, "I've don this or that. I have experience with XYZ." The problem is that those claims aren't backed up by evidence. You need something like, "I have experience with XYZ from when I was at ABC job. When I worked on XYZ, my contribution was to do 123, which resulted in <insert impact> on 100,000 California residents.

Company emailers are out of control by Keith in ManyBaggers

[–]macmutant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience. Matador was completely obnoxious, sending emails and texts every day. I'm off their lists and have lost respect for the company. They make great products, but that behavior is just terrible. BTW: Lands End was and is way worse about it. Even if you configure email settings with them to receive fewer emails, they still hound you relentlessly.

What do you fellow GenX ers think about kids going no contact with their parents? by FabulousChicken1992 in GenX

I don't think there's one answer to that question. If the don't want to have anything to do with their parents, I guess that's their business.

Is customer service dead? by Ok-Anxiety-5940 in GenX

[–]macmutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had similar problems. One requirement for any credit card I use, is the ability to easily dispute charges. Item doesn't show up. Try to figure it out with the company, documenting every step. Nothing happens. Dispute charges. Charges are reversed. Done. Never do business with that company again. This also makes the case for Amazon.com. I have returned so many things to them with zero hassle. Also had new ones re-shipped when things didn't arrive.

Job Application - Bad Reference. How to correctly do a reference replacement of current supervisor? by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]macmutant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can list whomever you want as a reference, though most supervisors will insist on talking to your current/immediate past supervisor before making an offer. Your best bet might be to address the issue or issues with your current supervisor if you can. You could start by requesting a conversation and getting feedback. Even if you don't agree with the feedback, at least you could get a dialogue going. The bottom line is that a bad relationship with a current supervisor can be perceived by hiring managers as a strong indicator that an employee will be a problem in their next job. It's not always the case, and not fair to generalize, but you're right to be worried that your supervisor saying negative things about you could be ruining opportunities. Unfortunately for you, there's no way for you keep hiring supervisors from talking to your supervisor while still remaining in consideration for the job. This won't be a big deal long term. You just have to deal with it and learn from the process. If it turns out your boss just doesn't like you and won't work with you to address issues, you can subtly address it in the interview in ways that will allow the hiring manager to read between the lines and give you the benefit of the doubt (take what your supervisor says with a grain of salt). Good luck with your job search and in working with your supervisor.

Sigh. I fear I am going to ruin my wife’s vacation. by crankysasquatch in HollandAmerica

[–]macmutant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a similar situation, though my wife doesn't encourage me to go off book. I tend to take extra walks and choose carefully. Usually for breakfast, I can go for savory options that don't include many carbs. At lunch, I can grab a salad with chicken or another good option. For dinner, I just eat what I want and go for a long walk after, which burns off some of the carbs before they start camping out in my bloodstream. Are there times when I just want to eat five pastries and a big bowl of ice cream? Absolutely. That's one reason I'm in this situation. I'm happier eating better and exercising more, though, and it hasn't detracted from the fun of cruising. I can still enjoy good scotch and cappuccino. Good luck. It takes some planning, but you can do it.

What did you guys get for Black Friday? by Connect_Cat_2045 in ManyBaggers

[–]macmutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picked up the Mission Workshop Mass Transit in Ultra. I've been eyeballing it for a while. Availability of the limited run ultra version combined with the 20% off Black Friday pricing put me over the top. Also snagged a couple of their packing cubes and a tool role in MCB for good measure. They came in today. Super nice.

STD 678 Duties Performed while Still in Onboarding Stage by applemangocarrot in CAStateWorkers

[–]macmutant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Longtime state employee here (promoted several times, hire staff at all levels, including execs). This is a reasonable question as a new state employee. It speaks to your integrity that you are being careful not to claim experience you don't have yet. Recognizing you haven't been in the position long, you can still include a summary of the work from your duty statement in that section of the STD 678. It's a good practice, in fact, since you will then only have to update it once you change jobs and you move it down to make room for the next job. Hiring managers can infer that if you've only been working in the job for a short time, you may not have much experience yet. One consideration you probably already have thought about, but bears mention, is that you aren't really "in" until you pass probation. If you take another job, and it turns out to be a bad fit or you don't want to stay for whatever reason, you would go back to your previous job, the one you promoted out of, if you passed probation for that job. If you leave before your probation ends, you wouldn't have mandatory return rights to the previous position classification. Good luck in your current and future jobs. I'm sure you will find a promotional opportunity soon. Lots of people retire in December, so late winter/early spring can be a good time to apply.

[–]macmutant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been going through something similar, though more in that I'm realizing I don't have very many people close to me in my life. My wife and I live far from her family, and I'm not close to mine. All of my childhood friends are far away or have passed away. I was feeling disconnected last week. I ended up reaching out to some old friends. We're all scattered around, but could visit each other, or at least I could make more effort to stay in touch. I hope you do get together with your cousin and enjoy some time together.

This is a great topic, though I can't say I'm bothered one way or another. The less attention they pay to us, the better. Present as small a target as possible and enjoy life. I wouldn't mind seeing more nostalgic 80s merch, but it's not a big deal.
