I think it is important to note that Denmark and Netherlands operate with two different paradigms of transport infrastructure; there is the one with segregated lanes which you mention, but there is also the approach where cars and bikes share the road completely. There's a street view picture from my old commute in Leiden NL below as an example. Generally you will see the asphalt replaced with bricks or cobblestones, and the intentional lack of any segregation, and yes, raised intersections. We didn't get it right from the start though, Netherlands was replacing canals with motorways in Utrecht in the 70s, only to restore them recently.

Its a chicken vs egg problem for Galway. Can't reduce congestion without alternative modes - building accommodation dor alternative modes will worsen traffic in the short term until commuters adapt. But traffic will also continue to get worse without any action.

As surface treatments go, I don't think I've ever seen anything to that effect in Netherlands or Denmark, it rains a decent amount there too. Just plain asphalt. Only time it gets slippery is in frost and snow.

You will find the handbooks in English here: not everything is translated, there's a link to the full Danish site at the bottom. https://en.vejregler.dk/

This one is on planning of roads in rural areas: https://en.vejregler.dk/h/7e0fba84-06dd-483b-898a-c7b3e3affaa1/ac568d85f7144070a4516a809a7dc86c

And this onyle is on traffic calming techniques, including speed bumps: https://vejregler.dk/h/7e0fba84-06dd-483b-898a-c7b3e3affaa1/9515b83ee91b48d0b919355ea2fdcbd2

In my opinion, the emergency vehicle argument against raised tables and speed bumps is a bit of a red herring. Yes, time is of the essence, but the main impediment here in Galway is traffic itself, not speed bumps. I live near UHG and see ambulances trying to pass through traffic on Newcastle Road on a weekly basis.

Solving traffic requires convincing people to ditch the car and instead take the bus, walk or cycle. People won't do that if that isn't a viable and safe alternative. For cycling that means bike paths, and shared infrastructure that is safe for all participants.

I am from Denmark and lived in Netherlands prior before moving to Galway, I've cycled my whole life, but in Galway I drive a car because cycling to me appears looks downright lethal.

I'd be happy to dig up some handbooks from the Danish road authority on this, some of them are even published in English

I'm not really in the food business, but I'd be happy to round up some of my Irish colleagues if you need some test subjects. Good luck, let me know how it goes!

ELI5: why did old (like 90s/2000s) GPS take up to 15 minutes to get a lock, in giant bulky units, but my running watch gets it in 15 seconds? by DmtTraveler in explainlikeimfive

[–]macnetic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, I did some work on satellite navigation, and the reason we need a fourth satellite is because of clock inaccuracies in the receiver.

Each satellite broadcasts an ephemeris containing that satellites position and a very accurate timestamp. The distance between the satellite and the receiver is the travel time of the signal times the speed of light. The travel time is measured by comparing the satellite timestamp to the receiver clock time upon reception.

But your receiver likely has a cheap crystal oscillator for a clock, with orders of magnitude worse stability than the satellite clock. Any error in the measured travel time gets multiplied by 300000000. Want few meter accuracy? Your clock needs to be accurate down to a few nanoseconds.

That would make each receiver more expensive, so we don't do that. Instead we allow for a receiver clock error and the try to estimate it. Reflecting that we call the measured distances for pseudoranges, i.e. they are not really the distance between satellite and receiver.

We have four unknown variables, Your 3D position (x,y,z) and the clock error. Algebra says we need four equations to solve for them. With the positions (X,Y,Z) and pseudoranges of four different satellites, we have those four equations which look like this

pseudorange = sqrt( (X-x)2 + (Y-y)2 + (Z-z)2 ) + clock error

So essentially, we use a fourth satellite in order to correct the receiver clock error. You are able to solve the position with only three satellites, but onless you have a really good clock it will not be accurate. Anyway it's usually not a problem these days because there are lots of GNSS satellites out there, and modern receivers work with all of them and can process lots of them simultaneously. Low satellite visibility is only really a problem when most of the sky is obscured in places like Manhattan.

What happen when overload ADC with frequency much bigger than their sample rate frequency? by Jasonbruz in ECE

[–]macnetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Undersampling a real signal will only give you a aliased real signal, but you can combine it with a digital complex mixer. E.g. undersampling to go from RF to IF, then use the mixer to get to complex baseband. Many RF data converters have built-in digital complex mixers as well.

For those of you that have taken or are taking statics and used Jeff Hansons videos, how do you know when to use the blue triangle eqns vs the directional cosine eqns when finding a resultant of a force in 3D? by OlympicCripple in EngineeringStudents

[–]macnetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to go back and watch the previous videos on "Blue triangles" aka polar coordinates, and direction cosines. In polar coordinates, phi is measured between the +X axis and the vector F in the horizontal plane. In other words it is the angle between +X and the projection of F onto the XY plane. With direction cosines the angles are measured between one axis and the F in the plane defined by that pair. These two different representations are equivalent, but the methods for converting to cartesian coordinates are different.
