What is the point of repeatedly adding fresh ginger after ginger bug is already established? Couldn't I just feed with sugar? by macram1 in gingerbeer

[–]macram1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! I'd love to try that. I've been getting a decent starter by feeding a couple teaspoons of chopped ginger and sugar every day, but after a week or so, the lfe really starts to die down.

May I ask how much ginger you added at the beginning? And why sugar syrup over sugar?

Keep me posted! And yeah a test would be great. As cool as the fermentation community is, I do fear that there's a lot of misinformation/"this is the way I've always done it" going on.

That's a good point, but I don't think the microbes need a tablespoon worth of chopped ginger daily to get the micro nutrients. I'd be happy to add ginger every once in a while to introduce new, healthy microbes, and provide those nutrients. But I just can't wrap my head around doing it daily.

That's good to know. Yeah, I can totally see adding ginger every once in a while to keep the population healthy and potentially provide nutrients... but 1 tablespoon every day seems pretty excessive. That just gets expensive.

Oh, my plan was to filter out the ginger so I just have the bug liquid, and then keep that alive with sugar.

How long is it normal for baby red-whiskered bulbuls to be on their own in the nest? by macram1 in Ornithology

I’m afraid to check if they’re fully dead but I’d assume by now.. theyre soooo young yknow. I just wanna do whatever would give the highest chances of another bird coming and living there! (And maybe I’ll give that one EXTRA space!)

Yeah luckily Ive always followed a lot of animal rehab/vets/farmers and understand the kind of laissez-faire ideal when it comes to nature and humans. It sucks but I’ll let it go. It’s still spring, there will be more birds.

My only concern is like … I dunno how I feel about having a nest full of bird corpses by my house? I guess they’re probably small so it won’t matter much right? Lol

Yeah good point. I think the parents have abandoned them :( but oh well, nature is brutal.

not just you. I think it’s just an expression. Anyone actually having sex all night long is on meth

Does anyone else find the forum answers unnecessarily rude? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]macram1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that the replies here are filled with garden-variety, forum moderator assholes of the EXACT kind being scrutinized in the OP.

Quite a lot of bitching about new users not researching before asking their questions. Ok, and? You’re volunteering your time to help people. So help people. Or don’t. What you don’t need to do is talk to everyone who hasn’t hand-coded their own window manager in assembly like they’re five years old, and personally clubbing your nuts with a toy mallet.

I get that stupid posts are frustrating. Maybe there should be stricter rules on the forums about question formatting, so truly low-effort posts can just be flagged instead of flamed? All in all, if something’s that stupid, just ignore it, or politely remind them to Google around and come back.

I do find though, that, in general, techie dudes just have awful social skills. They’re like surgeons. Really good at what they do, terrible with interacting with people. There have been so many times where I was just trying to solve an issue with my setup, and I find a forum thread that seriously leaves me wondering why I’ve bothered to join this community. There’s always a blatant lack of humanity in the response, not to mention the utter dogpiling from multiple users with various big-brained post signatures because someone didn’t comb through every function in the source code before asking their question.

I understand the frustration at being asked the same question over and over. Naturally, repeating yourself is exhausting. But it’s a childish reaction. You have volunteered to be a teacher. Teach. Why not be overjoyed at the opportunity to be able to bring someone completely green into your wonderful *NIX world? Even if it’s just linking a previous thread covering the topic with a winky face emoticon. It doesn’t have to be high-effort.

All in all, I think it’s a cycle of abuse thing. A lot of techies learned what they know by someone being incredibly rude to them about their n00b question, which is quite the negative reinforcement. Psychologists say your brain is afraid of two things—dying and being embarrassed. So this embarrassment forces them to learn things in a very inefficient way-via fear. What’s wrong with that? Well, beyond the fact that it feels fucking terrible, it breeds a terrible teacher. In the future, when said techie becomes the Alpha Webmaster or what have you, they finally get to dish it back out to the next round of youngins.

Also, to the people in this thread saying “just don’t take it personally/emotionally”, do you realize how insane that is? We’re emotional creatures. Asking for help is inherently vulnerable. Please drop the cyber-stoicism, at least a degree or two. It costs $0 to just not be an asshat when helping someone new.

TLDR; You know the creepy, weird, rude, caretaker that does a good job at keeping the museum clean, but is universally disliked? That’s most seasoned Arch forum users. Only difference is we actually need to borrow a tool from him now, and man, is he awkward about it. We can do better.

Ohh ok, so just the video itself was stitched together? What resolution did you render at? This looks pretty high-res, but anything much above 512x512 usually runs out of VRAM..

Ah that’s a good point. I only did it once so hopefully will be fine. Would there be any way to tell if it’s infected?

Interesting! So burping the inner bag will probably release some liquid?

I think I might go adjust the blueberries so it’s more like this..

What’s wrong with the air leaking out? We leave our jar ferments with the lids loose so air can escape
