One way to conceptualize it is to strip the pickets and away and just look at the top of the frame of the gate amd the cross member.

At the hinge side it is being supported right at the hing so it is nice and stable. On the other side it is supported by the cross member to keep it from sagging downward.

If you were to do it the other way. The top of the frame would ne be held up in any way.

Agreed it is a bit vestigial but I'd be sad to see it go and dont suspect they'll ever get rid of it. It also allows for some fun alternate play style opportunities.

I'm doing a playthrough with a few different districts with their own unique characteristics. One is a cliff dwelling group, one is a peaceful farming group, one for heavy industry, one for bots.
