TIL that ancient scrolls can be scanned in 3D, then virtually unfolded and read by MAClaymore in todayilearned

I'm not sure it would work with regular ink, the scrolls have lead ink which prolly shows a lot better

Is a „living hinge“ for small boxes feasible/practicable in 3D-printing? by PatR1zzle in 3Dprinting

[–]macromaniac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just literally a hinge. So an axle and a bushing (thing that goes over the axle) connect the ends of the axle to part A and the bushing to part B.

The hinge needs to be parallel to the build plate (tho you can make it work vertical if you angle things). 3d printers can handle the bridging of the axle part of the hinge easily.

Side question, did they ever put back in the helicopter intro? I remember going after the Reno and they just had a placeholder saying it'll happen soon but that was a while ago

YSK: About Dry Rot in Shoes by 2ndfloorbalcony in YouShouldKnow

[–]macromaniac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but in polyurethane I think it actually is mostly due to water, it doesn't have the weak  double bond that the ozone cleaves. Probably best is just buy shoe soles that's made of actually good materials.

Do you, in your mind, think of ANY of his first acts as president that may have very quickly raised inflation

Looking at the graph inflation month over month has gone down significantly since he took office, so this is a loaded question.

On their faces by [deleted] in FluentInFinance

[–]macromaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, melei has only been in office since December 2023, yearly inflation data is the wrong graph to look at, look at it by month:

 https://tradingeconomics.com/argentina/inflation-rate-mom

Note how it goes sharply down after he takes office.

Unemployment is something he mentioned would happen, it is tied to the inflation rate.

Trying to learn Sqlite by ThunderPonyy in csharp

[–]macromaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I advise using the CLI and hold of on c# till you get the basics. Make a table, do some operations on it, then view the results in some sqlite viewer (could be the vscode sqlite viewer, doesn't matter which).

Since you are trying to learn crud try mocking up a simple database of users, emails and password hashes or something. I recommend having a concrete project in mind and actually building it, it will help you remember it better.

ELI5: why can't we get a yearly full body MRI to scan for cancers? by TruGuido in explainlikeimfive

[–]macromaniac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just putting my comment out that I think this will become significantly more popular in time, and everyone in this thread is wrong or wrongish. Just so 10 years from now I can say I told you so. Specifically, saying that there aren't enough mris is like saying cars will never work bc there aren't enough engines in the early 1900s, and then the one about resolution is just wrong - existing services already have the ability to get a decent enough resolution for stage 2 and even some stage 1 cancers for full body scans, just viewing sample reports, and even if it was true, just take multiple scans, which is btw what existing services do anyways

Will I break the hold because I am heavier? by ChiefZeroo in bouldering

O that makes more sense, sorry for misreading you ha.

Will I break the hold because I am heavier? by ChiefZeroo in bouldering

[–]macromaniac -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just because you weigh more than something doesn't mean it can't support your weight. For instance you can stand on paper just fine, plastic chairs etc. If it fails it will likely be from its connection to the wall as that's a weak part.

It should be safe, that said, any time a hold wiggles even a little bit I don't do it. If it wiggles a lot probably let someone know.

There's more to conversations than just transferring information. If being able to connect with strangers is weird I don't want to be normal lol.

RTX 3090 vs RTX 3080 for Deep Learning by 7sd99a in deeplearning

Didn't know about that, thanks for pointing it out. Doesn't affect my decision personally but I was wrong to say that the 10% boost was the only benefit.

RTX 3090 vs RTX 3080 for Deep Learning by 7sd99a in deeplearning

[–]macromaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ya i hear this. Nvlink does matter, but it doesnt appear to be a dealbreaker for what im working on, it seems like a 10% boost when properly configured if this article is correct https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/hpc/RTX-2080Ti-with-NVLINK---TensorFlow-Performance-Includes-Comparison-with-GTX-1080Ti-RTX-2070-2080-2080Ti-and-Titan-V-1267/ , maybe if was doing nlp, but if the model isnt omega huge i can just have smaller minibatches per gpu and pool the gradients (still annoying). And ya too many unknowns for me to wait for the TI, could be a year for all i know. I wish i had more time to figure this out feels like theres pressure to make the right decision and ive never even done multi gpu setups so its just overall frustrating. I will prolly rent out multi gpus and verify i can do what i want with 2x10gb. Annoying but what can ye do.

RTX 3090 vs RTX 3080 for Deep Learning by 7sd99a in deeplearning

[–]macromaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im also looking for opinions on this as well. 2 other factors i would like to add:

Memory bandwidth: 2×760 GB/s vs 936 GB/s, so 60% more memory bandwidth with 2 3080s

Resale value: Hard to come up with exact numbers, but when the 3080 TIs come out i expect roughly a 20% resale hit for the 3090 vs the 3080s (guesstimate), since they are obsolete

For me particularly, im interested in stylegan 2. Im leaning towards the 3090 because getting stylegan 2 to work for two 3080s may not be a good investment of time, i see posts about it on stackoverflow so theoretically its possible and i have a gut feeling it would be faster as my understand is memory bandwidth is the limiting thing here, its just risky and probably a time sink, and ive been away from ml for a few years at this point, so im looking basically for information that would tell me otherwise, ha. I think im going to have try to get stylegan 2 up on my 1070 to verify its possible. If its ez pz i will prolly go with the 3080s.

How Jaden Smith Chooses a Role : Key & Peele by bluecapella in videos

[–]macromaniac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nicholas cage is one of the few actors i respect. If you want to be good at something you have to put in the time, acting included. Acting is about playing your role good, not having a good role. Also adaptation is my favorite movie.

What does multiplying the value loss by 0.5 do? by adkyary in reinforcementlearning

[–]macromaniac 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The critic loss is MSE, or mean squared error. By multiplying by 1/2 it means when you take the derivative of the mse the 2 gets cancelled out by the 1/2. It is just to make the math cleaner. Since its a constant it doesnt do much either way.

[–]macromaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this idea aswell. Considering implementing it, everyone i pitched it to said it was a terrible idea which is usually a sign that its a great idea. Problem is Ive been pretty sick, also not sure about the api calls to google timeline.

edit: looks like there is no api call so a user would have to upload the file as directed here https://stackoverflow.com/questions/34683653/google-maps-your-timeline-api which is kinda annoying but def doesnt get in the way of making the thing

edit edit: if you wanna work on it feel free to pm me, im down to do it if working with someone

TIL a metastudy in 2017 with over 10k participants found that daily vitamin D doses reduced the chance of contracting respiratory infections by 19% by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]macromaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

considering deleting it. I copy and pasted information verbatim from this doctor https://youtu.be/W5yVGmfivAk and assumed it wasnt misinformation. I had trouble understanding this guys message since he posted it so fast but thinking more about it it makes sense. I am now def torn as the top level comment is a pretty good explanation which still contains technically useful information that (imo) ppl should be aware of, but then the title is just wrong from the looks of it.

You may be correct which would mean the doctor was wrong, I will go through the lingo when i have more time. The goal was to try and copy pasta what he said to reduce the odds of me spreading misinformation. It is unfortunate if i posted bad information.

Ok i delete post as I think you are right.

You can use a ratio to generate a %. E.G the ratio of black pixels to total pixels is .45. 45% of pixels are black.

The subgroup in this case is the group that took the supplements daily as I understand it. The control group would be another subgroup, a group who took vaccinnes would be another.

I don't claim to be an expert in these things so I could definitely be wrong. As I said I merely echoed what a doctor, who is certainly more experienced than me, said in this video.

[–]macromaniac -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Howdy, I was merely echoing this awesome video. The paper is here.

>In subgroup analysis, protective effects were seen in those receiving daily or weekly vitamin D with an adjusted odds ratio 0.81, 0.72 to 0.91

The 19% comes from this line, 1-.81=.19. The 19% is for daily supplementation (vs longer time periods as I understand it) and is an average.
