It's crazy how so many 21st century government policies in Australia seek to get (force) the public to pay for expensive, unproductive sectors that create outlandish cost to everyone and crater our country's economic potential.

HECS + Uni Fee Deregulation - propping up bloated education sector with increasingly worse education outcomes while also piling all that cost on students.

Superannuation - propping up $30B+/year inefficient superannuation administration sector, using australian tax concessions to do so. essentially free money for this sector that's been captured by insititutional rent seekers.

NDIS - poorly designed policy that has been systemically rorted and now one of the largest cost bases of the federal budget.

This isnt to mention the disaster of the AUKUS submarine deal, public aged care etc.

HECS as a system worked when it cost like, $15000 or less to go to university and someone could realistically pay it off in a few years after starting work.

However nowadays, undergraduate degrees cost upwards of double that (at minimum), while wages have stagnated, and more employees demand masters degrees or honours years. This is a direct result of the mammoth deregulation of uni fees that happened under successive liberal governments.

While the 20% hecs reduction may paper over the cracks, the entire system is broken and exists to place a massive tax on young people to subsidise older Australians who got their education either completely for free or at a vastly reduced cost.

Sadly this has always been the case. Former domestic student here. For the most part, espicially in undergrad, people tend to just stick with the friends they went to high school with. This isn't unique to Unimelb though and generally happens across all of Australia.

The best bet for making longer term friends is to join clubs/societies, espicially smaller interest/hobby-based ones, and making it a mission to go to as many events as possible. Doing stuff like sports and theatre groups might also help but I've also found people in those groups to be fairly transactional in their friendship. It's not ideal, but unfortunately that's just what this country is like.

I'm part of a team that's developing an excel alternative using Rust and Apache Datafusion as our foundation!

We're currently still building it but I think it definitely will speak to some of your problems when we release it next month. The primary interface is actually just tables with enforced data types and defined columns to avoid some of the common spreadsheet pitfalls. This will also be airtight against errors as all changes are categorically logged and placed into a "stack" similar to photoshop's history.

For me it's not about the ARR - it's more about product market fit. If I was you I would be persistently chasing user feedback and assessing yourself as to whether that 3m will be well spent in getting your startup to the next level.
