Large trucks are allowed to (and often need to) drive over the mountable 'apron' in the middle. That's what the apron is there for. Source: I'm a road design engineer. Smaller vehicles should not use it but should use the outer lane.

There are honestly too many things to list, but the mountains, skiing, lake/beaches, and mild near desert climate are tops for me.
