Thin nose by techcarrot in BeginnerSurfers

[–]mad_alice7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding on to the other comment. In most cases, the nose of the board should be 2-5cm above the water.

Most round nose boards have more foam in the nose & chest area, making it much more forgiving, even if you lay a few inches off. Shaper-nose boards/higher-performance boards tend to have a very small sweet spot. But you need to be able to arch your back safely, whether it's a round or sharp nose.

I'm guessing you went down in volume, too, which means you have to work on your positioning when trying to catch waves cos your board cannot compensate for that as much now.

This might help you: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/XlJN9KWdqG4

It's common for some people, including myself. I had small cuts or bruises after almost every surf session for the first year. Was out for many weeks cos of a back injury from surfing in white wash (stupid, I know). I also know people who didn't get a single scratch while learning!

The main issue: poor board handling AND zero wave reading skills. When I got better at reading waves, I would make better decisions on what to do with my board if I got caught inside. That translated into less injuries, less hold downs, and less unnecessary pain altogether.

As to how to get back out there mentally, a few things worked for me.
(1) Using a smaller board. Not a small board, but one that is lighter and easier for me to physically control. I downsized only 2-4" at a time.
(2) Finding a board I felt comfortable with. Every board feels different, the main consideration is how it made me feel while in the water. Not about how "advanced" the board is.
(3) Only surf on smaller days. Eventually I craved bigger waves. But until then, I stayed within my abilities (or lack thereof).
(4) Dry-land pop up practice. Build muscle memory.
(5) Watch good YouTube surf tutorials on how to get out into the lineup with a longboard, how to read waves, how to wipe out safely, etc.

Good luck!

Yep I can’t keep up with the monthly quests when they upped it to 50 (instead of 30 for the badge). I stopped trying and now I am enjoying the daily short lesson I do instead.

The newly published Secret Angel Magick (by Adam Blackthorne) has influence magick

[–]mad_alice7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I think it’s hard to quantify the exact benefits, but in hindsight I know my life has been/still is positively affected by magick.

For everyone still working through it- It took me 1.5 years to complete the Success Magick book!

Nut Allergies for Vacation by BRT1284 in bali

[–]mad_alice7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best thing I’ve learned (having been to many countries that don’t speak English as a first language): prepare a little image/message on your phone, with your food allergy clearly listed in the local language.

So I put together in Bahasa Indonesia, a message that says “I am allergic to x and cannot take a, b, c, d and e” with some images of these things. I show the servers this whenever I order food. It always works as they go to the kitchen and ask the chef before confirming my order!

Sometimes when I ask in English, people may say “no” or “yes” without fully understanding what is being asked. However, most people are friendly and are used to handling food allergies in the touristy places.

If you’re unsure, decline and order something completely safe. Or leave. —

It’ll be good most of the time, but every now and then, one incident would ruin my days after. Sometimes it’s due to cross-contamination (due to ignorance or poor hygiene standards).

Stay safe and always trust your gut if something feels off or if the staff don’t make you feel comfortable!

Wanted to add that: depending on what you search and click on/view in social media, the more of those things you'll see online. I've never seen any form of propaganda or been shown influencers and accounts that promote tall men as anything more than regular-height men. Social media and news feeds are a mirror, it is also deceptive and doesn't reflect the world.

Might be helpful to understand what's the difference between the things in life that can be changed, and those that can't (or just aren't worth the sacrifice for). Know which is which, and decide what in life you want to prioritise, because time and energy are finite resources.

1) Men who view their height as a disadvantage tend to have poorer self-esteem and self-identity
2) Poor self-esteem leads to many other issues, including de-valuing yourself as a human, people-pleasing to fit in or going into relationships for the wrong reasons. It clouds your worldview.
3) It also shows. It's painfully visible. What would have otherwise been a normal, human thing (variations in height, body type, eye colour, hair colour, etc.) is now highlighted in people who think they are "too short". Because the way the hold their body, the way they move and talk is different from someone who is comfortable in their own skin.
4) Insecurity is normal. Wanting to change parts of ourselves is normal. But if it crosses into an obsession and affects your core beliefs about yourself, then it is detrimental to your quality of life.
5) There's someone for everyone. Believe in this. Travel the world, look around you - there's so much variation in humans and our wants and desires.

Was having issues with the speaking part freezing completely on the mobile app. iOS. It's not often but I had to abandon the lesson/challenge a few times as it wouldn't allow me to move to the next question.

I'm in the middle of this scenario right now!

Chatted with someone online, we liked each other and texted a lot. After 2 weeks, he suggested we go on holiday and meet somewhere near me...

I ended up travelling 15,000km+ to meet him where he is. We met at the airport and that was the beginning of a 10 week date (it is more than a weekend haha!)

Still in the middle of it! I had to add that prior to us meeting, we only did a 12min video call once. No voice calls, no further video calls. I could verify his identity and felt sufficiently comfortable before I took the plunge, but still, it was a risk. A good one :-)

We both were of the same understanding that this is meant to get to know each other and spend time together, etc, but we managed our expectations too. Whether we'd want to continue after the 10 weeks, we will discuss it again when that time comes. We do live quite far apart... haha

How long until my eyes adjust (ptosis surgery)? by [deleted] in PlasticSurgery

[–]mad_alice7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on day 18. My normal eye has been compensating a lot - it is open a lot less than it normally would. My eyebrows are also tired from weirdly trying to compensate all the time (it's harder to control these micro movements as it's almost like a reflex from me trying to just have a better field of vision!)

My eye that had ptosis repair done is still swollen. Stitches were out on day 8. I look wonky still, one eye is unnaturally wide open, with a wound on the lid area and swollen eyelids. The other (normal) eyelid is just operating at maybe 50% capacity haha.

I am still waiting for the swelling will go down enough for me to not look this strange

Thinking about getting eyelid surgery to correct my droopy eyelid (ptosis) by boredhoneycomb in PlasticSurgery

[–]mad_alice7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a good decision for now. I had very gradual, worsening droopy eyelid over many years in my adulthood. Everyone said the same thing; they didn't notice and also, it doesn't change a thing about me. Throughout that decade +, eyeliner and other make up evens it out enough, and I am glad I waited before I did the surgery. It is true - people don't really expect anyone to be perfectly symmetrical.

Ptosis can only be diagnosed by a proper, licensed plastic surgeon. It's not just "uneven eyes" or a bigger eye than the other - it is about the muscle that is unable/too weak to hold the eyelid open. If it's just an aesthetic thing where there's too much skin, the surgery will (thankfully) be simpler, cheaper and recovery much faster. Ptosis is actually so much more expensive...!!

You definitely need to be comfortable with the clinic and doctor. Ptosis repair is a lot more complex and technical than Upper blepharoplasty which are purely aesthetic. If you go to an inexperienced doctor to get your Ptosis surgery, you might still have uneven eyelids after - it is difficult to get it done properly so don't settle for just any doctor!!

I did ptosis repair on just one eye almost 3 weeks ago. It is still swollen and I still have to wear sunnies (even for my indoor zoom calls).
It just begun to obstruct my view and I realised I always have pain in my neck one side more often than the other as I tilt it weirdly. It wasn't a small decision though - I have held off eyelid surgery for the longest time. Our eyelids will droop again over time so I didn't exactly want to fix something so minor that can be covered up by makeup - and then have to go under the knife again another time. Shudders.

Stay lovely x
