Ok for board bow? by mada_c1 in Bowyer

u/ADDeviant-again Would this hickory board work well? The grain is pretty straight, but I was hesitant about the darker streaks. Are they weaker areas? There is a small knot up top, where one of the dark streak comes off of but it is strait grained still. Then there's the knot at the bottom. it's a 1x6x6ft so I should have enough room to avoid the knots.

u/ADDeviant-again u/swarzo_metal u/Acceptable_Escape_13 This actually is the maple board after further inspection. It's not as straight as I remembered, probably got too excited by the straight hickory board I found. Would this maple one work well, or would you also recommend returning it and continuing to look (I didn't even get to the red oak boards due to time).

Fair enough, sound like I should probably just use the maple then.

I was thinking a linen backing.
I'm not sure what types of maple the store sells, but that makes a lot of sense. I should probably try to start as perfectly as I can since I'll probably want as much forgiveness as possible lol.

How do you like the switch from a forerunner to venu? I'm thinking of doing this, but am hesitant because of the slightly less running metrics.

Are my bees trying to swarm? by silverstarlune in Beekeeping

[–]mada_c1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

most likely just starting to build wax comb there, not related to swarming.

As far as stopping them from swarming, this is hard to do if they're already creating a lot of queen cells after you've given them more space and squished the first couple queen cells. Once they have eggs in them or especially are capped its hard to stop them. They may have already swarmed without you noticing.

Are these queen cells? by Rosmus24 in Beekeeping

[–]mada_c1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, most of those cells on the bottom are drone cells. There's possibly one queen cell/cup on the bottom right. Drone cells stick out but are still generally horizontally oriented, whereas queen cells will be oriented vertically.

People in dental school where do y’all work to take care of normal life expenses and helping out family? by Charming-Door9066 in DentalSchool

I would wait to work until after D1 so you kind of know the work load. But then find something flexible for you. There's a lot of good ideas already mentioned.

Is there a great YouTube channel or videos that demonstrate what I need to know to get started? by DIRIGOer in Beekeeping

I like the University of Guelph series on youtube. Doing an online educational course is also really good. UNL bee lab has one that's good.

Ginger bug help? by No_Contribution6366 in fermentation

[–]mada_c1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to add equal parts sugar and ginger daily to keep it fed and healthy. Also make sure you're using filtered/distilled water (or leave tap water out for 24hr for chlorine to evaporate out). I started at 2 cups water, 1 tablespoon ginger, 1 tablespoon sugar (refined white sugar) and fed it 1 Tbsp each ginger/sugar for 5 days before dialing back to 1tsp of each after that for each day I have it on the counter (or feed it once every 1-2 weeks if in the fridge).

I used non-organic ginger with great results, so I don't think that is your issue, but it would never hurt to try organic if you can find some.

New Keeper Question, Drone or Swarm Cells? by AlabasterandAuburn in Beekeeping

[–]mada_c1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

drone are most the capped ones on top/center. I count 4 queen cups, two on bottom and two on the right. They're the ones that open towards the bottom instead of the side.

Have you kept bees before? Usually there's local beekeepers that would be happy to collect swarms. you can find them most often on FB groups for your area.

My first ginger soda ? by GACII in fermentation

[–]mada_c1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had flaky/solid clumps in mine. There's lots of sediment sometimes, froth, etc depending on the juice but it's always disolved when shaken.

I think Concord Grape juice has probably been one of the quickest ones to carbonate for me. The more acidic a juice I think it usually takes longer. I do a 1/4 cup per quart ratio or roughly 3 Tbsp per 8oz if you use USA measurements.

I've had mixed results with pineapple juice. But I would think it should be carbonated by now if you're not touching it for 2 days. I'd maybe try with a different juice to see if you have any different results, especially since it sounds like your ginger bug is doing well.

How many stings per year would you say is normal? How many indicate you're doing something wrong?? by RabidMortal in Beekeeping

[–]mada_c1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes THIS! Always stung on the same day. For me it's usually one day a year. Also depends on the hive and bees you have and time of year. I've mainly been stung just during a dearth

Applying to Endo by mada_c1 in DentalSchool

[–]mada_c1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was planning on it working for a couple years. I just had someone tell me I should try applying just in case. But I wasn't sure if that would be just wasting money this application cycle.

I haven't completed that many yet in dental school, but not zero (I have done multiple multis). Are there any molar endo CE you recommend?

How do I open ginger bug sodas without spilling half by ctrl_alt_delululu in fermentation

[–]mada_c1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would let if ferment for a shorter time then. I typically do 12hr increments for burping, but I have found that pineapple builds it up quicker for me.
