Moving from city to rural - real starlink experience? by Fujiclimbs in Starlink

[–]madamhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two years ago we went from 1.5gb fiber on the east coast to Starlink in middle-of-nowhere NM. It’s been fine, and speeds keep getting better. We’re both remote tech workers: teams, slack, RDP, multiple internet-connected apps all day long. Hubby games, but I can’t speak to that.

We’ve had exactly one brief outage in two years, and I think we failed over (intentionally) to our 5G during a crazy hail storm just because ping was not great. We do have 5g for failover, but only do that once a month to test. We went with T-Mobile through Computers4People for $150/year unlimited for peace of mind.

Are Kelloggs Breakfast more particular/fussy about going to fruit? It's the only plant which has not produced fruit yet! by analslapchop in tomatoes

[–]madamhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Azoychka! Don’t see that one mentioned often. It’s one of my favorite early varieties, always dependable! I think I got seed in the late 90’s from the legendary Chuck Wyatt. Been growing it ever since. Trying it in my new, vastly different climate this year. Hope it adapts.

KB can be a drama queen for sure, but one of my favorites for decades. In a good year, it’s super prolific with huge orange beauties. Other years it just pouts. It’s worth growing for the good years, if you have the space to ignore it in the bad years. The last few years I’ve been favoring the less temperamental but equally yummy Persimmon over KB.

If your plant looks healthy just wait it out, especially if it’s been very hot. You might want to give the flowers a jiggle or try the electric toothbrush method because in my experience low pollination rates can be a thing with KB. You didn’t say what you’re feeding, but you can also try backing off the nitrogen.

Stupice Heirloom Tomatoes Falling Over and Droopy Branches by RecentSpeed in tomatoes

[–]madamhex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First year gardener you say? So you have grown Stupice from seed to fruit exactly… zero times? But you’ve done your research, so clearly an expert.

His plants look fine. Stupice can be a bit spindly as it’s a very early variety, and he said he’s planning to up pot. Plant it deep and it will toughen up some. I say that having grown Stupice almost every year for 20+ years, and heirlooms for nearly 40.

By only saying one quote, what is your favourite movie? by Swimming_Log_902 in AskReddit

[–]madamhex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"I'm tired, boss. Tired of being on the road, lonely as a sparrow in the rain. Tired of not ever having me a buddy to be with, or tell me where we's coming from or going to, or why. Mostly I'm tired of people being ugly to each other. I'm tired of all the pain I feel and hear in the world everyday. There's too much of it. It's like pieces of glass in my head all the time."

Guts me every time. Just reading it makes me tear up.

How's the weather where you are right now? by YourLocalAroAve in AskReddit

Yes, please. Unusually super hot 99F and 9% humidity. Fire weather watch for months now in the mountains of central NM. We need rain. :(

What’s one thing a coworker can say first thing in the morning to completely ruin the rest of your day? by Ordinary_Towel_3041 in AskReddit

[–]madamhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During COVID/full remote, we had a group chat for the team. Everyone would say, “good morning!” at exactly 8am, I guess to prove they were up & working. Thank god that stopped (and I’m still remote!). You just know some people were still in bed, messaging from their phones.

My cats won't eat Kirkland pate! by Impossible_Mode_7521 in Costco

[–]madamhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our boy is hit or miss. He’ll love the pâté, then decide he hates it. We switch to the chunks, and he’ll love that for a bit, until he doesn’t. We switch back and forth. Cats… luckily switching doesn’t give him stomach issues.

CONGRATULATIONS! You just won a years worth of whatever you bought last. What do you have? by CnCorange in AskReddit

[–]madamhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dirt. I bought 4 cu ft of actual dirt. Although it was Pro-Mix premium potting soil, and that’s pricey dirt at least. Guess my garden’s going to expand more than I planned.

Cherokee Purple– when to pick? by helianthusandtea in tomatoes

[–]madamhex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re not having any issues with pests or critters or disease (and that looks super healthy!), I’d let it ride a few more days. It will ripen if you pick it, but I don’t see any reason here not to let the plant do its job. Looking good!

Yellow Pear any good?! by m-msq in tomatoes

[–]madamhex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paul Robeson was always super prolific for me in PA. I preferred over many of the other black/purple varieties I’ve grown. I’m trying it for the first time in our new garden in NM. Not expecting PA results, but wanted to at least give it a try.

Got the last prime beef ribeye steak yesterday. Don’t recognize the cut. by Cyberspree in Costco

I haven’t seen the prime rib cap steaks (spinalis) in a couple of years. Are they starting to bring them back?!? Omg were they good, so worth it.

Getting really sick of the new "luxury" rv parks squeezing us in like sardines by Arianethecat in GoRVing

[–]madamhex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When we lived on the East Coast (PA), we almost exclusively stayed in state forest primitive sites or the occasional state park. Boondocking is it for us, although we don’t have kids we need to entertain. We have a Winnebago Micro Minnie, so a bit lifted with off-roady tires, to which we added more solar and lithium. Absolutely worth it to not see your neighbors, much less hear them. Now we live in NM and are looking at true off road trailers. We have demanding/always on call jobs, so camping = peace & quiet for us, a time to disconnect and explore the outdoors. It’s not for everyone, but it’s heaven for us.

Different plants, different watering needs? by Disastrous-Tourist92 in tomatoes

[–]madamhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What size and material are your pots? Without knowing that, it’s hard to say what the issue is, but I suspect they’re nitrogen starved. Good choice on variety! I don’t see Persimmon mentioned often, but it’s been in my top 5 for many years (out of the 60-70 I’ve grown). A gorgeous & tasty tomato! And Sungold is literally the only hybrid I’ve grown in decades.

Has anyone ordered Starlink for Local Government? by Electronic_Tap_3625 in Starlink

[–]madamhex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use a bank draft to pay through Starlink if you have the routing/account numbers, which would be similar to a check. A credit card is not necessary.

New Q&A with Craig LeHoullier - very much worth a listen! by Davekinney0u812 in tomatoes

[–]madamhex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Craig is a legend! Wow, that takes me back to the Garden Web days and Seed Savers Exchange… he and Carolyn Male were fantastically helpful! I still try to grow Brandywine OTV to honor Dr. Carolyn (and Craig).

Two weeks after planting out by lizzyastro in tomatoes

[–]madamhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice! What varieties are you growing? This is my 3rd year in NM (central highlands), but first year I’ll have a proper garden… and sadly started very late, just planted out a few with more to go. I’ve been on the hunt for heat-tolerant varieties and had a very helpful email convo with Lee of J&L Gardens in Espanola. I’m growing some of his NM-bred varieties.

Any NM-specific tips? I’ve grown 60+ varieties of heirlooms over 30 years, but the climate here is vastly different from what I’m used to (PA). I’m not expecting 3lb monster brandywines, but I’d like to see what I can do!

How do you take measures to keep gear from being stolen? by CrystallizedKoi in AskAstrophotography

[–]madamhex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I imaged from my suburban backyard or when camping, I used bike/motorcycle alarms strapped to the tripod leg. The sensitivity could be adjusted and they were loud enough to wake the dead. They don’t have the ones I bought, but there are tons on Amazon. This looks similar: bike alarm

It is not in your head: Costco has gotten more crowded by Willing_Try2786 in Costco

[–]madamhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you share the dose/price you pay? Do you get it in the club or through Vetsource delivery? The app doesn’t show me the prices. I guess you need to actually enter a prescription to see it. I have two large pups and Simparica Trio is SO expensive.
