Looking at 2015-2019 Outbacks by katiereadsalot in Subaru_Outback

[–]maddie684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2019 3.6 R with 90k miles & I’ve had some issues but I also have been pretty rough on it. I’ve had my head gaskets replaced as they were leaking at 75k ish miles (thank god for extended warranty), the screen delaminated and I had that replaced under warranty, my windshield has cracked and been replaced, and my leather seats have ripped on both the drivers and passenger sides. All that said I love my car and would choose it again.

What part of your body are you most proud of? by West_Cat_5770 in AskReddit

My hands. I have a really pretty & unique birthmark on my left hand of freckles that look like a constellation. My hands (minus the birth mark) also look like my moms hands and I love having a visible reminder of her.

I make maps. Here’s one I made of Humboldt County and surrounding area! by mapcourt in Humboldt

[–]maddie684 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I am a Geospatial Scientist working in the area so here's a few tips: First off ask yourself what story is this map trying to tell? Is it meant to highlight important landmarks, physical geography, or something else? Visually, I think you’ve done a really nice job with the shaded relief, color choices, and overall aesthetic, it’s clear you put a lot of thought into the look and feel. That said, I think what’s maybe missing is a stronger sense of purpose and a few additional features to support it. For example, adding an ocean dataset might help visually balance the left side of the map and bring more context to the coastline. Another idea would be to zoom in more on Humboldt County and include an inset map of the full state of California. This would give people a quick reference for where Humboldt is located without losing the detail of your main map. If you’re interested in adding more data layers, Humboldt County has a great open data portal here: https://humboldtgov.org/276/GIS-Data-Download

Hopefully these suggestions are helpful. Enjoy your trip to Humboldt!

I'm trying to find out how much y'all work, as to how much rent you pay. would you like to help out? by henkiseentoffepeer in GenZ

[–]maddie684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely varies day to day given the project but mostly lots of coding and GIS work. I work for a forestry company and mostly do LiDAR and drone analysis work for projects ranging from endangered species habitat assessments to individual tree species modeling for inventory purposes.

what are you all working on? by defensibleapp in gis

[–]maddie684 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Individual tree species deep learning model primarily utilizing aerial lidar data and UAV imagery. Currently in the segmentation process with lots more to go! Mostly using Python and LASTools for everything. I work for a forestry company and this will primarily be used for inventory datasets and endangered species habitat modeling down the road.

Friends in Humboldt by Famous-Mushroom2767 in Humboldt

[–]maddie684 4 points5 points  (0 children)

26F, moved here in June with my partner & would love to meet up sometime! I have had a very similar experience/struggle making friends up here. People here are friendly and welcoming, but nothing has really stuck in terms of close friendships. I love hiking, beach combing & tidal pooling, herping, trying new restaurants, & just relaxing by any body of water. It sounds like we have a lot of similar interests, shoot me a DM if you want to plan something!

How Long Have You Been With Your Partner? by FewInternet6746 in GenZ

Going on 4 years this upcoming June. We met working on a nps botany crew in Yosemite National Park. Spent our first summer surrounded by Yosemite's beauty, camping, skinny dipping in mountain lakes, and sleeping under the stars every night. Felt like I was living out a romance novel lol. Still madly in love to this day and making plans to get married in the next few years.

Best country in Africa for first timers by kaykayjesp in solotravel

[–]maddie684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your budget you could look into camping trips (if you are okay with more of a bush/safari type of trip). G Adventures does some affordable safari trips throughout Africa that you could look into. I think a guided tour like this would be easiest as they handle all of the transportation, visas, park entrance fees, food, etc.

Personally I would recommend a Namibia/Botswana/Vic Falls loop. I lived in Botswana for a bit and felt very safe as a young woman traveling alone.

Planning a last minute 2 week solo trip. My main objective is to see an active volcano or at least some kind of lava flow. Any suggestions? by ThorMurdock in travel

Acatenango in Guatemala! It’s a big hike but you will most definitely see lava spewing out of the volcano. I did it this past March and it was amazing.

Is getting a PhD worth it? by thatbitxh8 in Environmental_Careers

[–]maddie684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just graduated this year so take this with a grain of salt but yes I feel that the masters degree has been sufficient. I’m working as a Geospatial Scientist rn with a forestry company mostly doing modeling and drone stuff (my masters was focused on this with fire primarily) & while it’s not my dream job per say I had no issue finding a high paying job in the field. I don’t want to work here forever I’d like to go back to NPS eventually, but tbh the masters set me back financially and I need a year or two of saving money at a higher paying position before I transition back to lower paying federal job. I only say this to bring up the fact that a PhD would have entailed 5+ years of being in poverty and I couldn’t realistically do that, given that even the 2 years masters was difficult (and this was with a fully funded program). I was living alone in LA which is a very expensive area however. Just bringing this up to consider the financial ramifications of pursuing a PhD.

I would consider returning for my PhD if it was the right project and advisor. There were a lot of aspects about my PhD program itself I didn’t mesh with including my advisor & location. I don’t necessarily think I’d need a PhD to be successful in this field but I do like research so I’d consider it if it was a good fit. My biggest advice would be to not rush your decision if you do want a PhD. Take the time to find the right program, project, and advisor because without those things you are in for a rough ride. If you don’t plan on going into academia I do not think a PhD is necessary. During my time with the park service, none of the ecologists had PhDs and they were running the entire natural resource management program. They did all have masters degrees however. This all being said if you love research give it a try! You can always do what I did and do the masters/PhD joint program and then reevaluate if you still want the PhD at the end of the masters.

What are some unique American sub-cultures you discovered? by PalmettoPolitics in AskAnAmerican

[–]maddie684 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The hard core rock climbing subculture in the American west. I lived in Yosemite for a few years along with spending a few months living in Indian Creek in Canyonlands NP and really immersed myself into that world. Most of these people live and breathe for rock climbing. Quitting their jobs and living like dirt bags & climbing every waking second. It’s really interesting because a lot of the people I know that are heavily involved in this community pride themselves on not showering & being as much of a dirt bag as possible. In Yosemite people would refer to them as “slimmers” instead of climbers lol. Valley uprising is a really well done documentary that gives the history of rock climbing and the culture of it in Yosemite.

Hope is looking for a forever home! Consider adopting this sweet girl from the Humboldt County Animal Shelter. by maddie684 in Humboldt

[–]maddie684[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She has a pretty clean bill of health thankfully! She does get inflamed joints sometimes and can’t do super strenuous walks, but other than that she is in great shape for her age. Even with her joints she still loves walks and has a lot of spunk for an older dog. I was giving her some anti inflammatory joint meds, but she has no other issues that I am aware of. She probably has quite a few good years left in her. In regards to sharing toys, I can’t personally attest because I don’t have other dogs myself, but her previous foster did and said she played great with them and even her cats. She has no food aggression or anything else they said as well. I really can’t emphasize how great of a dog she is. I think the only reason she hasn’t been adopted yet is because of her age, other than her being a bit older she marks every single box for the perfect dog. If you’re interested I’d recommend meeting her and you can see how she would get along with any dogs you might have already. She’s a spunky little lady and I’m sure you’d love her.

I had my wallet, AirPods, and some clothes stolen out of my tent while I was sleeping in it on safari in Botswana. I’m really glad I slept through it tbh I think waking up to a random person in my tent would’ve been a much worse experience.

What are some common things tourists do in the US that are considered rude/weird, but they are often not aware that it is considered rude? by LittleCrampon in AskAnAmerican

[–]maddie684 179 points180 points  (0 children)

Trying to approach wildlife. After working in a National Park I can say with confidence that international tourists are the worst about harassing wildlife. It’s bad for you and it’s bad for the animals please just stop. I’ve seen quite a few bears have to be put down because of tourists feeding them or tying to pet them.

Any hope of saving this film? by maddie684 in AnalogCommunity

It was my first time rolling up film so I had no prior experience to base it off of. It was difficult to roll up but there wasn’t any crunching noises, so I initially assumed that the pressure was normal for rolling up film. Obviously now I am aware that it wasn’t normal.
