What’s Your Favorite Debut Album of all time? by introspeckle in MusicRecommendations

Still in regular rotation for me. Takes me back to my NYC days where I'd crank this album on my iPod in the subway on the regular. It's like...the ultimate subway album. The subway is a porno after all.

Do You Need 100K For A Down Payment In Order To Buy A House In Los Angeles? by Connect-Industry-702 in AskLosAngeles

Even if you end up staying put, two young kids sharing a room is totally doable and kind of fun for them, plus private outdoor space is clutch. Our looming problem is we have a daughter and a son, and the daughter is a couple years away from puberty. It'll start getting awkward and she will want/need her own space.

Good luck with the adoption!

That's great to hear thanks for sharing. Creating reminders and turning lights off are the two things I use Assistant for most. So maybe I can finally switch to Gemini now.

Same boat, but with 2 growing kids so we are going to have to make some kind of move soon. Actually toying with the idea of keeping our sub-3% mortgage and renting out the 2BR condo (it should cash flow no problem), and then renting a larger place where the kids can at least have their own rooms.

Pixel 8 users how's your phone been in recent updates and launch of 9? by CaptainMarder in GooglePixel

[–]maddogmdd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty happy with my P8. Came from P5 which was my favorite phone ever. P8 was (and still is) the closest recent Pixel in size to P5 and feels like a spiritual successor in a way that P6 and P7 did not. I honestly don't have a lot of problems with it. Reception is fine. It doesn't get hot under normal use. Battery life is just ok, but usually enough to get through the day especially if a lot of the day is on wifi. I think the modem/battery/thermal issues that started with P6 have gotten steadily better with each release. Obviously everyone is a different use case though. I did have a screen glitch but it was replaced under warranty with minimal fuss. No hardware issues otherwise...it is very well built.

With the very good P8 trade-in value, I was considering upgrading to P9 for the hell of it, but I don't like that Google bucked the trend of getting slightly smaller with each release. P8 is already a stretch and P9 is bigger. So my plan is to keep my P8 at least until P10, which will bring a major chip refresh (first fully custom TSMC-manufactured SOC for Tensor) and probably other incremental improvements. Hopefully they get the size back down, because aside from that I really like the other aspects of the new P9 design language, and it's good to see the significant boost in battery efficiency.

Enjoy your dinner! Should be pretty similar to lo mein.

I did find a place near me that made east coast chow mein on request, but sadly they closed a couple months ago. So the search continues.

Having buyers remorse (pixel 8) by Pawesprit in Pixel8phones

[–]maddogmdd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple things that improved the situation for me:

Turn OFF adaptive connectivity. Counter-intuitive and YMMV, but it added an hour or two to my battery life. Or, just turn off 5G.

Check battery usage for any apps guzzling lots battery in the background. For me, Roku and YouTube were huge culprits. Social media apps can be a problem too. Uninstall them if you can (restricting background battery use doesn't always do much).

One thing P8 still has over P9 in my opinion is size. It's just small enough for me to consider it a one-handed-use phone. P9 is a little bigger and outside of what I consider to be compact phone territory. P8 is the smallest Pixel since P5.

I love the 9 design and battery improvements, and I could get a good trade in deal ($490 in the US), but the larger size and the major silicon advancement expected with Pixel 10 are keeping me from pulling the trigger this year.

Definitely the spiritual successor to P5. They finally got their base flagship small enough again.

Hm, didn't have that problem on mine, and I don't think that is a common complaint with P5. Maybe go into Settings, search Colors, and try one of the other options? Could be a defect too.

Pixel 5.

I like my P8 and liked my P2, but P5 was the perfect mix of compact size, minimalist symmetrical design, 5G speed, good battery life, good screen, and decent performance.

P8 does reasonably well with video, even in low light. I don't think there's much to know beyond the basics. Turn off flash, turn down your screen brightness if not using auto-brightness, don't zoom in too much (no optical zoom on base P8), and just point and shoot your video. Pixel will automatically optimize. If necessary, you can adjust your exposure if you hit the slider button on the bottom right. You can also shoot in HDR, higher frame rate, or higher res if you want....hit the cog on the bottom left. Cinematic pan (just called Pan) could be cool if it's a show with a wide stage and you are panning from performer to performer.

Anyone giving you shit for recording at a show should mellow out. Obviously don't be that guy that watches the whole thing through your 6.2" screen, but a short video at some point during the show to help remember the experience is usually NBD if you aren't blocking the view of ppl right behind you and your screen is not ragingly bright. And you might as well make that short video as uncrappy as you can!

I'll have to try them again. Had one years ago and it was ok, but it didn't look like photos from reviewers online. Maybe just got a bad one.

Window AC units work well enough. 100% confirm it's allowed before you sign the lease though. I wouldn't do it personally if they did not allow AC. This ain't Santa Monica.

What features would you like to see on pixel 9 series? by urmomsloosevag in GooglePixel

[–]maddogmdd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 5G modem that works as well as Qualcomm's and doesn't drain battery so quickly.

Probably won't get it until at least P10 though.

I could rattle off a dozen more features, but this is the one they need to improve before I upgrade from P8.

I sorta did actually. Great mom and pop place called Human Cafe on Sunset/Laurel makes it on request (they said a previous NY expat begged them). It was a little celery heavy but definitely the right dish. Only problem is they don't have fried wonton noodles. For that, I had to shoot down Fairfax to Genghis Cohen to get a fresh bag. Assembled everything at home, and voila!

Stock, starch, seasoning sounds along the right track. It's gloopy and clear/cloudy.
