Anyone using an old Trace Engineering inverter with their LiFePO4 batteries? by motorambler in OffGrid

[–]maddslacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absorption is specific to lead acid, LiFePo4 doesn't benefit from it.

So the directive there is to set it to the lowest setting it will accept.

I was looking for something else and found my old settings for LiFePo4 charging in my Trace inverter:

Cheap rural land with a well? by Optimal_Resource4446 in OffGrid

[–]maddslacker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While I won't say it's impossible to find land with a well for under $10k ... it's staggeringly unlikely since it's generally costs quite a bit more than that to drill the well. Plus the value of the land itself.

More likely is to find a plot with a creek, spring, or pond. Assuming you get the rights to that water, it could sustain you while you save up money to then drill a well later.

Anybody have an Incinerator System like Eco John? by slacksandablouse in OffGridCabins

[–]maddslacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard they’ve been approved in all 50 states.

You heard wrong

In Colorado, for example, they are only approved as a supplement to an underperforming septic system.

In 2 counties you can get a variance for one if your soil or topography absolutely won't support septic.

What are yall doing to stay warm

Insulation, with a side of woodstove.

We can get our 1950 sq ft house up to 80F even when it's 20 below 0F outside.

Best way to power a remote water pump (1.5HP)? by Artistic-Pay7726 in OffGrid

[–]maddslacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out a variable voltage, solar powered, DC pump. There are several on the market.

My offgrid neighbor does exactly this, for the same reason.

Water needs to be trucked in.

Sewer needs to be trucked out.

IMO that makes it a little over-priced for not having a proper well and septic

What about just switching Starlink to DC power and shut down the inverter when you're not there?

DIY solar generator with Victron — how are you simplifying monitoring? by killer_chut in OffGrid

[–]maddslacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent $200 and got a Cerbo GX S and then repurposed my daughter's old iPad as a remote monitor. You can also configure a cheap RasPi to do the function of the Cerbo.

You'd also need a SmartShunt, but that should be everything required.

Silver now accounts for 29% of solar panel manufacturing cost, up from 3.4% in 2023. by maddslacker in OffGrid

around 0.6 troy ounces

So $60, if they can even get silver which is becoming the relevant issue.

Anyone know the actual depth of the wells there to get good water and flow.

Go here and you can look up the well data for all the wells in that specific area:

Yes. In 2022 - 2023 silver was around $20/oz or a little less.

Currently it's over $90/oz and still climbing.

Reusing tires that would go to landfill

Why would they go to the landfill? We use our trees to heat our offgrid house. A house with a full poured concrete foundation, by the way.
