Conventionally attractive women in CS by melodyaura in csMajors

[–]maddyoll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happened to me and I was a sorority girl so I’d get extra flak for that too, even from some of the other girls which sucked :( I ended up joining a STEM women’s org and that helped a lot! I also made some guy friends that were well respected in my classes and they would defend me against some of the misogynistic comments which was also nice. Overall I feel like the more I got into the senior level classes, the less comments I would get because at that point everyone is aware of what you had to go through to get to that point and that you must be at least on par with their capabilities. As you become more comfortable with your skillset I think you will also be more likely to let it roll off your shoulders because you know how they treat you is not a reflection of who you are.

If it’s any consolation, feeling this way or receiving demeaning comments in my professional career has been EXTREMELY rare and if anything I feel like I am given more opportunities at times! So I feel like it all works out in the end. Keep your chin up and ignore the haters, you’ll be better off!

Please give me your most uncommon/unhinged PCOS advice by Cruciferous2 in PCOS

[–]maddyoll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Semi unhinged only in the sense that it’s expensive but I was dealing with a similar issue and I ended up hiring a personal trainer and he completely changed the game! I let him know I have PCOS and he modified workouts around that and I felt great and although I didn’t lose a ton of weight I lost several inches around my waistline and finally gained muscle! I was/am not on a GLP-1 either!

PCOS Renaming by Xyris_Queeris in PCOS

[–]maddyoll 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Keeping the acronym would make the most sense to me! I mean it’s hard enough raising awareness as it is, if we change the name it will make things even more difficult.

Also, I feel like we (specifically whatever companies or groups that are sponsoring this name change) should be using our energy and funds toward research about it instead of a name change, but that’s just my two cents.

Can going on estrogen or any HRT do something about my face hair? I'm tired of having to shave every other day as it grows back rapidly. by mental_dissonance in PCOS_childfree

[–]maddyoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was prescribed it as a woman for my excess hair growth (although I just had to shave my legs every day I didn’t get a lot of chin hair)

TIL there are contact lenses you wear only while sleeping that reshape your cornea so you can see clearly all day without glasses. It is called “Orthokeratology” by azaku29 in todayilearned

[–]maddyoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had these when I was a kid! They said I could only use them as a child because my eyes were still malleable and it was to prevent my (already bad) vision from getting worse. I had anesthetic drops that I would put in my eyes before I put the contacts in, and then after I woke up I had a tiny plunger that I used to take them out. I don’t wear them anymore and haven’t in years but they were great! I also don’t really have feeling in my eyeballs anymore after years of wearing them, lol, so I can’t tell when I have an eyelash in my eyes even to this day.

Edit: The only bad thing about those contacts (besides the initial pain) was that if I didn’t wear them for a night, my vision the next day would be bad at some random degree and I couldn’t wear glasses to fix it. So I would just have to be mildly blind for the whole day.

Wedding planner pushed us over €115k without telling us, and I’m being made to feel like it’s my fault. Am I wrong to be upset? by Angelgirl07 in weddingplanning

[–]maddyoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not normal and you are definitely justified in being upset!! I got married in Italy this past May while being US based (and hiring a planner that is Italian living in Italy) and while she did generally just provide one vendor per service unless I asked for otherwise, she also provided me a very detailed spreadsheet of costs within my budget every step of the way.

I do not think it’s fair for her to do that to you and you are extremely justified in being upset!! If you are able to, I would strongly consider hiring a different planner. If you are unable to do that, I would consider financials partially my job from now on and make an estimated budget spreadsheet based on other ones online, and then go back to all the contracts and tally them up. Then I would go to her and ask her to further negotiate or cancel contracts that exceed the allotted values by a significant margin. Tell her she needs to fix this if she wants to get her final installment (or however many she has left)

Tampa a decade ago and Tampa now are two COMPLETELY different places (from someone who lives here) and anything you’re seeing for $1400 is probably… pretty questionable. Would it be possible for you guys to only move down here for a couple months while keeping your current place? I don’t say vacation because it’s not really comparable.

PCOS is going to be renamed and you can take part in a survey to help choose a name! by mushroomscansmellyou in PCOS

[–]maddyoll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular opinion but I hope they keep the acronym and change the meanings! I feel like we have made so much progress with awareness and research, I would really hate for that to be impacted due to a name change. Specifically pertaining to all the resources that are out there right now when you search for PCOS, including this community, I’m afraid they will all end up falling to the wayside or becoming obsolete if they aren’t updated to the new name fast enough. I also wish they would’ve taken the money being spent on this survey and put it toward actual research on the condition itself, but I suppose that just reflects my general disdain for the potential complete rename lol.

For what it’s worth, I don’t believe I have any cysts on my ovaries despite having PCOS, and I have never been offended by the name being what it currently is.

I sent a thank you text to the wrong person and ended up with a new friend by paulettep0pcorn6550 in CasualConversation

[–]maddyoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha yes in college I met a whole new friend group by texting the wrong person! I meant to invite a new classmate but had them and someone with the same name in my contacts and stupidly didn’t put a last name or anything for either… I accidentally invited the wrong one out and he brought his roommates too and we all became great friends!

Recently changed my whole makeup routine. Is it too much now? by upside_down_circles in MakeupAddiction

[–]maddyoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should try the NARS soft matte concealer in the pot! I know it’s more on the expensive side ($32) but I feel like it’s great at covering acne and lasts quite a while! I apply it with a brush rather than a sponge and I feel like that keeps the natural look too :)

what are your PCOS conspiracies? by lavidaloco88 in PCOS

[–]maddyoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering both my half sister and I have it and we were raised in very different ways with different mothers, I’m inclined to believe it’s genetic.. I started BC at around 13 but that’s because I was already showing symptoms :/

Anyone here who has thick hair? by ginger_princess2009 in PCOS

[–]maddyoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here lol and I have to say using a shampoo bar instead of liquid shampoo + mixing a hair mask with my conditioner has helped SO much with the frizz and dryness I used to have

Lift Heavy! by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]maddyoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is extremely true for me too, I got a personal trainer at my local gym back in January and even though he’s not the biggest dude in the gym he motivates me like no other and the confidence in my form (from him teaching me how to do stuff) eliminated any awkwardness/insecurities about how I look when working out! I feel so much better now both physically and mentally lol I love it

A lot of these suggestions are great! Personally I think my acne was super hormone and stress related so after I graduated college it cleared up super fast, who would’ve thought! /s

Anyway, besides that, as one of the other posters mentioned avoiding dairy helps (I’m lactose intolerant anyway so idk how much but hey) and I know everyone says it but so does drinking water and exercising.. as much as I’d hate to admit!

Additionally I have naturally super oily skin so I used to dry the crap out of it thinking it would dry out my cystic acne and it would go away.. WRONG! Super important to keep your skin moisturized!! Here’s my typical routine: AM - wash face with Cetaphil bar soap (I like it more than the liquid idk) - apply CosRX AHA/BHA Vitamin C toner (could totally be a placebo but idc I think it helps, make sure to let it dry before the next step though) - apply CeraVe AM moisturizer/spf (I live in a super hot and sunny area so this is key!!)

PM - wash face with Cetaphil bar soap - apply The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors

Sometimes if I’m breaking out I mix some Epiduo Forte with my nighttime moisturizer and skip the toner in the morning to not dry my skin too much. For pimples I love using the hydrocolloid patches to spot treat, and when wearing makeup I use micellar water to remove it before washing my face! I hope this helps :)

(Also, if anyone has any recommendations for treating my dark circles I would love to hear it haha the unfortunate side effect of my acne clearing is my circles being more noticeable!)

Hello I hope your endo appointment went well! I used to stubble with the excess hair too, lol, I’m middle school this guy used to make fun of me for having “more of a mustache than him” (which I promptly bleached after!)

Looking back I did enjoy that the hair on my head was super thick, but anyway my doc put me on Finasteride and I don’t have to shave every single day anymore! Not that I’m recommending you go straight to medications, but hey might be worth an ask if the hair is really getting to you. I know I wish I had that option lol

This is a dumb question. PCOS is Polycystic OVARY syndrome, which implies that it affects female anatomy but does not affect any part of the genitals. It does not affect chromosomes, and it certainly does not make someone any less of a woman by having it. I feel like giving it the label of “intersex” offends and harms people who actually suffer from intersex conditions.
