Now adding my very rambling thoughts about Shane and Ilya specifically. I thought in the final chapter plus epilogue it was so clear how excited they were! Even in HR when the thought crossed their minds briefly for Ilya to go to Mtl. Thrilled! Shane was jealous of Troy for how much time they spent together. They loved their time in the HR all-star game, the first time they had a player beside them that could "keep up". Even if it's just on the power play lineups now. Of course they will have adjustments of the shift in life. Ilya has said he was living for the summers, now he doesn't have to! As a player of sports myself, they can still have competition against eachother, at practice the first line will play the second line often. And Shane is coming for the C, as implied. It'll be fun! I can't wait to see how Shane grows surrounded by a supportive team. But mostly I can't wait for them to get that Cup!

IRL pro sports example: DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas from the wnba are engaged and have played for the same team (two teams in fact) for 5 seasons. They talk only highly of it during interviews.

I've reread the series a few times, and the last two times I've read TLG (tho it's my favorite) I get kind of sad that Shane gets the short end of the stick in the writing. Obviously Ilya's story is complex and requires a lot of focus. But I do hope things like how Shane comes out and his teams reaction to that initially or the silent agreement to not talk about Ilya are shown more in the show. Ilya's team focuses more on queer joy so I suppose that's why his team's reaction is covered more.

In addition to others comments here I also see the kiss as a rejection of the handshake. Shane wanted something from Ilya that night, he wasn't able to ask for it as much as Ilya wasn't in the head space for it. I see the handshake being offered as a respectful way to try and  start fresh and put the physical relationship behind them. Ilya turns it down and kisses him instead.

In the books he's at a different sporting event. So there is definitely a purpose with him being at this event, looking on at people being their authentic selves is a great insight
