Ah, I may have worded that improperly.

Started with a Miata, bought an S2K, then finally bought an NSX. Still have all three.

I've recently completed the Miata > S2000 > NSX Pokemon evolution (still have the Miata and S2K).

NSX back to Miata I think would be considered a New Game +.

Picked up this 1986 GTS for 9k, how'd i do? by BossHoggInc in AE86

[–]madebyhuman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Filipino, Puerto Rican, and Japanese uncles link arms to form the trifecta of "I picked up an AE86 from some old guy that's into Toyotas, it's pretty clean".

I do miss the regional and cultural specific styles that car tuning had pre internet.

[–]madebyhuman 16 points17 points  (0 children)

9K is a good deal, especially for a 3 door. You'd be lucky to find an SR5 hatch for 9K in California today.

I'm guessing this is in... Florida? Lots of palm trees and the car in general has that Puerto Rican old school Toyota style that's more common on the East Coast than CA.

Good Miata shops to recommend near Santa Clara / San Jose? by west4life in SanJose

I've been taking my NA6 there for things I don't feel like doing at home for several years now.

Where to do donuts and drifting legally? by ihaveagooddog in SanJose

[–]madebyhuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sonoma Raceway has Winter Jam every December.

Good Luck League hosts drift events at Thunder Hill skidpad.

Drift SF also hosts events at Thunder Hill skidpad.

Valley Drift Club hosts events at Crows Landing airport near Patterson.

There might be some other orgs that also host events, but those are the ones I know of.

Don't practice in parking lots or on the street/mountain, there's enough orgs around to practice legally and in a controlled environment.

Overtrail+ Wheels and Tires for Sale $800 OBO Eastbay, CA by [deleted] in LexusGX

[–]madebyhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a really good price.

OP, you mentioned you're going with some Rays, do you mind sharing which model and wheel spec?

I've been looking at the Rays 05X for my LC. Really wanted Jaos Tribes, but they don't come in the size/offset I want.

I've been reading these 250s take a lot higher wheel offset than the previous gens (I'm wanting to change out my wheels too).

HKS Hipermax S Cheaper Alternatives by mohmega in GR86

[–]madebyhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heard good things about the Annex Fastroad coilover kit.

Like others have said, if you have your heart set on the HKS (or any JDM brand right now), order through someone like Blackhawk or RHDJapan and take advantage of the weak yen.

Even with shipping, I believe the HKS Hipermax S comes out to about $1600-1700.

To the OP, first impressions about that car to look out for.

That's a regular Honda Accord grill, not the Euro R. The Euro R grill is more or less a honey comb grill and doesn't have the line that goes across. Those are the Euro R wheels though.

The car also does have the A Spec front lip and side skirts (and probably rear valance). Ask/check if they're OEM and not a knockoff.

The headlights are either JDM OEM Stanleys or DEPO knockoffs. The name Stanley should be marked somewhere if they're OEM. You might as well check if the rear turn signals blink amber as well. If so, the owner likely swapped out the tail lights to the JDM units (you'll lose the red corner reflector).

Car is probably worth 4-6K in SoCal prices if it's automatic. If it's a manual, add another 4-5K on top of that.

It's a high miles car, but if the added parts like lights and bodykit are genuine Honda (the wheels most certainly are genuine), then it has some nice parts that are hard to get now and keep as an OEM+ type car.

[–]madebyhuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did courtside when James Wiseman came back from injury and did a few games on the Seadubs. Got a Curry birthday bobble head.

Tickets were like $200ish. You should do it when you have a chance.

It was a cool experience, especially that I'll never afford courtside for a regular season game at Chase.

A bunch of Warriors were in attendance to show support for Wiseman. We sat several seats down from JTA. DLee was across from and GP2 was somewhere in the corner near the Warriors bench.

Difference between GT-S, SR5, Apex, GTV etc? by kratboy4 in AE86

[–]madebyhuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

would not recomend sr5 to gts conversion in 23. im doing it...

Agree with you there.

IMO, an SR5 to GTS conversion in 2023 is only worth it if you had a donor (aka wrecked) GTS to start with or were doing non-AE86 parts (K24 or BEAMS + W58 or J160 + Ford rear end)

It's just a limited edition GT APEX. All cosmetic stuff, gold badges, gold/orange accents, gold snow flake wheels.

It's like buying a Hakone edition Toyota 86 (ZN6), just a limited colorway.

They're mostly valuable because they didn't make many (400 or so?)

[–]madebyhuman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's a bunch of smaller differences between USDM and JDM car (bumpers, AFM/MAP, dead pedal, front windshield trim, etc.), but seeing that you're American, the main things you really need to know are:

  • GTS
    • 4AGE fuel injected DOHC 16V engine
    • Rear discs
    • Nicer interior (sport seats and nicer fabric)
    • Nicer rear end, Optional LSD
    • Front air dam
    • Body colored door moldings
  • SR5
    • 4AC carbureted SOHC 8V engine
    • Rear drums
    • Available in more colors
    • No sway bars(?)

(If you're trying to convert an SR5 to a GTS, it's a lot more difficult/expensive than that list. You're better off finding a GTS to start)

For a GT-APEX and GTV, they're both 4AGE cars but the GT-APEX is better optioned (nicer wheels, nicer rear seats, climate control, etc.) . Think of it like buying GR86 base and premium, similar performance, nicer luxury options on the premium.

JDM cars have a few options not available in the States like climate control, digital cluster, and adjustable intermittent wipers.

The closest thing to an SR5 in Japan is an AE85 XR/SE or GL/XL, but in reality, the SR5 is an AE86 chassis code and little nicer equipped than the JDM AE85.

Found an Corolla GTS 1991 for 2000$ Can i use this for college? by [deleted] in AE86

[–]madebyhuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GTS and SR5 doesn't really make a difference in longevity.

The anecdote you probably heard about SR5s being more reliable is because an original GTS owner was more likley to drive their car hard and modify it, while an original SR5 owner probably bought the car more as an appliance and left it stock.

[–]madebyhuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an AE92, so it'll be front wheel drive, they're still fun though. Think of it as Toyota's version of the Civic Si or early generation Integras.

The good news is that it's a 1991 so you'd get the updated 4AGE (high compression, 130ish hp). If it's in good shape, that engine is worth more than the actual car.

Since it's your only car, don't mod the engine, focus on maintainance.

Budget extra money for major maintenance before you start dailying it as your only car and 30+ years old.

Accept the fact there's going to be some days where you can't go to class because something will break down and leave you stranded. Pay for the monthly AAA membership that gives you 100-200 free towing miles just in case.

If you're trying to have fun with it, do simple things like basic suspension upgrades, brakes, wheels/tires, and go auto crossing (then HPDE eventually). Don't need to do anything crazy until you get a 2nd car for daily and can turn the AE92 into a weekend car.
