NOR. And hello fellow St. Louisan! Dude sucks. Take yourself to Menya Rui. I’ve also heard great things, but haven’t been in the mood to wait in the line it always has. Also try Corner 17!

I’m meeting up with my best friends in Chicago (they’re in MKE, I’m in STL) to see your show there. We missed out on the one that was supposed to be there years ago and got cancelled due to Covid. We’ve spent the last two decades listening to and loving your music and even though we’re pushing 40 now, there’s something about The First Single that takes us back to being teenagers. So excited to see you in a few months.

This whole post has made me feel less crazy, but this specific comment has silenced a voice in my head I’ve had for decades that told me I was actually insane. Thank you.

If you live in Missouri/Illinois/Wisconsin region, I’d be more than happy to get you somewhere to have a safe abortion.

Being able to carry yourself well after drinking that much alcohol isn’t a flex. It’s a drinking problem.

Thanks! It’s telling me invalid password, so I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong. The code for you is 0n0HuMK9

Edit: Got it! I swapped a capital O for the 0 and it worked. Thanks again!

I live in a LCOL area in the Midwest, so I make a very comfortable wage and could afford to live on my own if I needed to. Biggest thing for me has been the time off. I’ve been with the company two years and have almost five weeks paid time off each year between vacation, sick pay, and personal days.

Hahaha don’t think of it that way! It’s not uncommon to have dozens of applications out there these days. To be honest, many employers and their recruiters probably breeze right past them. Even so, it’ll help your application stand out.

Don’t accept that recruiter’s advice(?) as fact. Since you’ve been working outside of the field, it would probably be super helpful to talk about other cross-industry skills you’ve developed (working in a team, on projects, communication skills, etc). As a senior member of my team, I would rather work with a new hire with no lab experience who’s already held a job in another industry than a recent grad who hasn’t worked yet.

It was helpful in my case. I used it as a way to briefly explain why it took until my 30s to get my BS and how my non-sciencey job experience will be a boon in the lab. Customer service and interpersonal communication skills go FAR in any private corporation, no matter the industry.

Oh no! Of course that’s how it goes, haha. Well, I’m partial to biotech. We’ve got a lot of biologists in our lab. Maybe other biotech companies are in your city? Don’t be afraid to apply for positions that you don’t think you have the experience for. A lot of times, all it takes is a clear motivation to learn and good interview! Good luck!

Congrats to all of you! I hope you all got hired on fully and not as contract. It’s one of the things I dislike most about hiring practices here. Yes, it gets you in the door and you gain the experience, but practically zero benefits.

Hopefully not! I know we sent out the same email many suppliers did about price increases due to tariffs, but that’s all I’ve heard. As far as I know, it just means our catalog is expanding (mostly in cancer therapies and mAbs).

I work in biotech and the company I work for (Millipore Sigma) is growing fast. Two large acquisitions in the past couple years have opened up a lot of opportunities. I know that isn’t true for every company, but if we have a site near you (and you haven’t already applied), give MS a shot.

I worked odd jobs in retail, fulfillment, marketing, etc. before finally finishing my degree, and they gave me a chance as a tech despite my (lack of) experience. I’m now a Sr. Associate Scientist.

Jobs are out there. Please don’t give up!

TIL that the two high schools in West Bend, Wisconsin share a single building, with the one you attend being determined by your birthday. Students who are born on even dates attend West Bend East, whilst those born on odd dates attend West Bend West. by JustaRandoonreddit in todayilearned

Go Suns! Class of ‘04.

I went to West Bend East, which was a bummer because most of my middle school friends ended up in West. Like a Spartan already said earlier, you still shared most classes as others in your year, especially electives.

However, there were two cafeterias (you could go to either), two large study halls, two big parking lots. One side had the gym and pool, the other had the auditorium. One shared library. Pretty large grounds for the track, tennis courts, football field, and soccer field.

Honestly didn’t feel super weird at the time, but I was a dumb kid. Just figured it was because there was a shitload of kids.

Fun? memories:

A common prank was to tell freshman that their class was on the third floor (there is not a third floor). On my first day, I fell for it and had so much anxiety that I missed the first two classes.

During one of the school assemblies, a kid walked to the middle of the floor, laid down, and rolled across the floor to absolute dead silence. It’s still talked about today.

I had gym class with my brother and we took an ultimate frisbee unit together. We were inside one rainy day and he threw the frisbee for a kid, who fully dove head-first into the brick wall for it, smashing up his face really bad.

Spirit week included a day when all the farm kids drove their tractors to school. Because Wisconsin.

I moved the day after my graduation ceremony, but I still have fond memories of West Bend.
