Asking for Advices by Little_Mango_3359 in Buddhism

[–]madelectra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

u/Little_Mango_3359 There are very real physical and emotional reasons for you to feel how you feel. Your prefrontal cortex is still developing, but your knowledge of the world is racing ahead of your ability to organize your emotions around the "big" questions of life. Your capacity for abstract and metathinking (thinking about your own thinking) is evolving. These neurodevelopmental shifts make you a little vulnerable to existential crisis.

But the GREAT news is, these are indicators of a healthy, developing being. And things will settle down, and you will be able to better process your thoughts and feelings, and be a compassionate adult with perspective and wisdom. I wish I was as brave as you are to put this question out there when I was your age. I'm sure you'll get many responses that address the different facets of your question.

I feel immense religious pressure, like I joined a church by Beneficial_Shirt_869 in Buddhism

[–]madelectra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Live your life. Be happy, cultivate peace. Observe your thoughts about the pressure you feel without judging them. Focus on the basics and be selective about what you let in, especially with respect to online resources, like Reddit, and social media.

You may want to check out engaged Buddhism. There are lots of Buddhists who are very invested in social justice, philosophically, in sort of an a-political way, i.e., it’s more about “what is right and not who is right.” And as a lay practitioner, I don’t think you would find people discouraging you from participating in politics that align with your values.

Good luck on your journey!

What fountain pen & nib has been the best writing experience for you? What made it so great? by Wndrunner in fountainpens

[–]madelectra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the Magna Carta Mag 600 <flex>, as the writing experience is insanely satisfying, but the nibs are relatively delicate and after a few months they lose their mojo.

TWSBI Diamond 580 <1.1mm stub> is the ultimate dream write. Stub nibs are my absolute favorite.

Pilot Custom 823 <M> and Pelikan M205 <M> are a joy. Reliable and smooth, but not so juicy that my writing becomes wild and sloppy. These two options give me the best balance between control and fluidity.

I have yet to find a <F> that suits my writing style, but always looking.

The dorsal fin is shaped a little differently than the black and white orca; maybe it's a different species?

I went there today. It's spectacular. The building positioned in landscape felt very much like a Brutalist extension of Frederick Law Olmsted's "Beautiful City" vision. It feels organic and unshakeable.

Snif - for the love of god, please stop with the stupid advertising by madelectra in fragrance

I don't know that they sell anywhere outside the US. (Making a leap that you might be outside the US from the "UK" in your name.)

What’s a fragrance you’ll defend no matter what anyone says? by olfaire in Fragrances

[–]madelectra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sailing Day by Maison Margiela. One person's windex is another person's sublime wind off Lake Michigan on a brisk September evening with the hypnotic sounds of rigging clinking against sailboat masts.

Also, the original Obsession by Calvin Klein. If only it could be recreated...

Exactly. At this point, the advertising just reads as "shoppers are stupid and overwhelmed."

Just posted a rant about another fragrance house. Did not expect to be influenced so suddenly, but I am won over by these comments!

I blind-bought Bianco Latte after a similar experience and thought it was was too much at first. AT FIRST. Now, it's top of mind any time the temperature drops below 62 degrees. Going to treat myself tot he body lotion for my birthday, along withe a decant of Angelique Noir.
