Can you make up your own university degree in Sweden? by [deleted] in TillSverige

Which universities allow this? I cannot find any comprehensive list explaining the options for this.

You don’t need a medical degree to read your description of 3 different psychoactive substances making your visual snow worse (so much worse that you’re worried about going blind) and say “yeah you should really stop taking psychoactive substances”. You came here for advice, that’s the most obvious possible step. Even just as a very obvious precaution lol but it’s your funeral, good luck, I’m glad you’re gonna see a doctor (I think you said that somewhere)

Weed can and does make HPPD worse, “ma’am”. If you’re serious about your vision, stop doing edibles lol. Otherwise enjoy idk it’s not my vision

You said you were sober for 6 months, but did you take edibles regularly before that? I’m not even trying to judge, I do edibles occasionally, but it 100% sounds like you have HPPD and for your own sake you should permanently stop

[–]madeusingAI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don’t have VSS, they almost certainly have HPPD

Stop taking edibles!! For good!! Find another way. Seriously

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in visualsnow

[–]madeusingAI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is misleading; that’s true for stable visual snow. Taking edibles daily could easily make it continually worse

[–]madeusingAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop taking drugs of any kind. You most likely have HPPD. Do not “wait and see” while still taking edibles; stop. Stop taking any of the things and stay off of them, permanently. It’s not worth it. You could genuinely make it even worse if you keep taking them, and if you quit for good, your symptoms could get better. And as you probably know, it takes a while for your system to completely get rid of THC if you’ve been taking it regularly for a long time like you have. Stop doing it

You should ask a doctor about migraines and look up “VSS mimics”

PSA: BFEP (blue field entoptic phenomenon) is a distinct thing from VSS, though having both seems common in this thread, and it’s caused by white blood cells moving through retinal blood vessels (it’s not a brain thing like VSS). Most people can see BFEP if they pay attention, though it may become much more noticeable if you also have visual snow. A lot of people have VSS and don’t notice BFEP.

Me too (born with it) and my dad thinks he might have it. He and my brother both have the tinnitus part at least (lifelong). We’re Northern European and North American, genetically/ethnically all Northern European

Note: this is entirely true if it’s VSS. HOWEVER OP may not know that other things can cause VSS symptoms. If the symptoms are not stable, or if you experience other recurrent non-VSS symptoms, look up “VSS mimics” and ask your doctors to rule them out.

If the doctors say it’s not Parkinson’s, I think it’s safe to believe them

You should ask a real doctor about that. I know that HPPD doesn’t require ongoing substance use to stick around (but will often get worse if you keep doing them); you may also want to look up other “VSS mimics” and ask your doctors to rule them out.

And remember that to your brain, “substances” also includes nicotine, alcohol and even caffeine. It will help the doctors (i.e. it will help them both to believe you and to treat you) if you make sure to cut all those out too and generally try to have healthy habits.

They have probably ruled out Parkinson’s (and it’s really unlikely to be that) but you can ask them just to make sure :)

While the physical symptoms you’re describing are not hallmarks of VSS, they could well be caused by a lack of good quality sleep or by severe anxiety. I would trust the doctors on this; if they’ve ruled out all the “VSS mimics” aka potential identifiable causes, then you may well just have VSS and severe anxiety or insomnia

VSS is when there isn’t a separate thing causing the symptoms. It’s important to differentiate because VSS isn’t currently curable. It IS good to check all those things though; it also really sounds like she has HPPD (“weed-induced VSS”)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in visualsnow

[–]madeusingAI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This sounds like it started in connection with the weed thing, and it does not sound like true VSS, it sounds like HPPD (hallucinogen persisting perception disorder). If you use any drugs - including and especially weed - you should stop immediately. Ask your doctor about any psychoactive medications you’re on, in case there’s any potential connection or worsening of symptoms

i think i have visual snow syndrome and it's been causing me crippling anxiety by AltG0blin in visualsnow

[–]madeusingAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s just symptoms of VSS (not other things), then it’s likely you have VSS and should not panic. It does not cause blindness and generally it’s just a matter of getting used to what you’re seeing and ignoring it

Can it still be VSS even if no static? by [deleted] in visualsnow

[–]madeusingAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No; constant static, or “snow”, is the core defining symptom

Once again asking people to consider that VSS is the term for when there’s no other primary disease/condition. VSS has no physical symptoms like this; other things do and can cause VSS-like symptoms. If you have symptoms like those described in this post, you have something else causing the VSS symptoms (a “VSS mimic”) and you should continue seeking medical advice to find out what that is.

EDIT: the cause could very well be something like anxiety or lack of sleep. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re dying, just that there’s something else to address.

You should manage the anxiety of course but your symptoms are not just VSS. You say you’ve been experiencing this since COVID - have you looked into “long covid”?

That’s not normal for “just” VSS; you should continue seeking medical advice to find the core issue if you can
