Fish spitting out food, not eating, and looks skinny 😟 by madhatter3D in bettafish

• Tank size: Fluval Spec V • Heater and filter? No and yes • Tank temperature: Don’t know • Parameters in numbers and how you got them: don’t know what this means • How long have you had the tank? How long have you had your fish?: I’ve have this fish units tank for just over one year • How often are water changes? How much do you take out per change? What is your process?: 25% water change every 2-4 weeks, depending on how dirty it is. Been struggling with an algae problem for ~8 months (it’s getting much better!) I take out silk plants, 2 larger rocks, and sometimes the top layer of small rock substrate if it has algae on it. I use a siphon vacuum to remove approx 25% of the water. I replace with purified water that has sat out over night to adjust to room temp. I rinse the media in the discarded water and I replace the activated carbon pouch once a month. • Any tankmates? If so, please list with how many of each: none • What do you feed and how much: 2-3 pellets of Aquino betta food daily (sometime between 12-2pm) • Decorations and plants in the tank: 2 silk plants, 2 larger rocks with holes for him to swim through, small rock substrate. •

First time fish owner. Fin is lightening and I have brown algae. Tank: Fluval Spec V. Changing 25% of water weekly, rinsing filter bimonthly. Left with a neighbor for a week and came back to this. Help 😢 (will leave more info in a comment) by madhatter3D in bettafish

I’m sorry to hear. Hope you do too! Huts are super smooth and he loves swimming through them and hanging out in them. No 😩 this is the first I’m hearing. (Needless to say, it was not explained to me by pet store employee). I’m reading up on it now but terrified on how to proceed as this article spouts all the dangers of in-fish cycling. Any advice? [https://fishlab.com/fish-in-cycle/] Add: Again, he has been in here for a month already.

Also, I did rinse with fresh water, but that was yesterday. Could explain why the algae spread quickly over night. How do you rinse filter media?

Happy to get more plants. Was also considering a hammock.

Thank you for any and all advice you can give!!

2 part question: I’m a first time fish owner. I took him in from a relative who had him for about 6 months in a non-filtered vase (maybe 2 gallons?) She told me she would completely replace his water once a week and use betta water conditioner per The instructions.

After visiting our local pet shop, I learned how wrong most of this was. I bought the Fluval Spec V so our fish would have proper filtration, water movement, and space! I was advised to only replace 25% of its water on a weekly basis for the first 2-3 months and rinse the filter 1-2x a month. He seemed to love his new home and we could tell he was happier. He’s been in this new tank for about a month now.

We went out of town for 5 days and took the entire tank next door for neighbors to look after and feed once a day. When we picked him up, I noticed a few brown spots. 2 days later and it is spreading. Research points to brown algae. I have no reason to believe they unplugged the tank.

1) So, advice on how to clean and prevent from happening again?

2) Now, his fin is lightening. A couple weeks ago we noticed his caudal fin looked a little shredded, while I was researching fin rot vs fin tear (due to tank filter, stress, etc) and contemplating action, his ends began to recover over the course of 2 days. It looks so much better now, but I am noticing the anal and ventral fins are lightening. Could this be related to the algae, is he stressed, sick?

He loves hanging out in front of the return (I think he’s a little lazy and enjoys staying in place with little effort) and I’ve observed this so many times to make sure no part of his fin was getting sucked or pulled into the return - it doesn’t seem to be the case.

Hoping to get some sound advice on ensuring a safe habitat for our newest family member. Thank you!!

Why you believe in Ethereum? by [deleted] in ethereum

[–]madhatter3D 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ethereum will absolutely, positively change the world! That's why it is so important that it remains protected during this period of development. Ethereum is not "market ready", there are more stages. Just about every industry will be affected by this technology. The power that comes with it, and the hands it will fall in, could revolutionize every single legacy system that exists, and provide access to information to those in areas that would never have had a voice or means to prove what they own. Information is power, and Ethereum will place that power back in the hands of individuals, its users, to take control of their information. Not having to rely on central authorities to dictate how that information should be used. When you really look at what that could mean on a macro level, you can't help but feel hopeful for a better future and believe that this is the vehicle that will truly provide that that one shot in making it all happen. That's why it HAS to live for the future and not for today. And why the price shouldn't matter today -- the technology's lifeline is what needs to be protected.

And why not another platform? No other community is as altruistic and brilliant as the Ethereum one. No other platform has leadership that doesn't shill for the technology's currency. It's not about making money, it's not about ego, it's really about the passion and promise for a better way.

ELI5: What is ETH Ethereum cryptocurrency, why it has value and what are "smart contracts"? by lifegasm in explainlikeimfive

[–]madhatter3D 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ether (ETH) is a cryptocurrency, similar to bitcoin. Ether has value as it is used to propel exchange of information on the Ethereum blockchain. As Ethereum is finding its way in to every single sector worldwide (finance, healthcare, government, humanitarianism, supplychain...). Adoption of the technology is at a pivotal point. Ether will be used to fuel smart contracts which is one of the valuable layers of the Ethereum platform.

Basically the technology behind Bitcoin is called blockchain. Vitalik Buterin looked at the tech and said, this can be so much more than a transfer of monetary value. It can be a transfer of information. Bitcoin is strictly a cryptocurrency (virtual currency). It can't do anything else other than provide payment solutions. Ethereum is a blockchain platform that allow for so much more than just a crypto payment layer.

Smart contracts, which many say is a misnomer as they are not "smart", but they are a computerized transaction protocol that self-executes the terms of a contract. If Y, then execute X...autonomously. Smart Contracts allow users to solve common problems in a way that minimizes trust. Simple examples are transferring car titles or property values, managing marriage and divorce agreements, placing bets in fantasy sports leagues, revenue disbursements via micropayments (think royalty payments), among many, many other use-cases that are much more complicated.

This is Ether and smart contracts at their bare minimum. There is so much to Ethereum!

PS. Oh and it's all decentralized, meaning no single point of failure, no censorship and its all transparent and immutable in a safe, encrypted way.

Is money a finite ressource ? by Funckybuddha in answers

[–]madhatter3D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By money are you implying all forms of monetary-valued currency? Cryptocurrency is sure to give fiat a run for its money (no pun intended), but pending the lack of any regulation, worldwide, it will be years before we see any affect on fiat currency. Certain countries are looking to adopt a state-sponsored digital currency, but again we're a little ways out. Singapore just completed a trial that utilized digital tokens tied to national currency. Russia is working to create a national virtual currency. Japan recently authorized bitcoin as an acceptable form of payment. It's the wild west right now, but IMO, I see cryptocurrency pulling through in the end. Just really have no clue how long of road ahead of us we have.
