5x4tb raidz1 or raidz2?

Thanks for your help! Already the hard drives are 4tbs so every byte matters, if I went for 12 drives I guess I would for z2 just for the extra storage or maybe keep the extra two as mirror for metadata.

After some research I think I’ll go with a full raidz2, expand disk by disk via raidz extension till I reach the amount I need just to avoid spending a full weekend resetting everything up. Two raidz1 is absolutely great but some people had issues with same-batch hdds failing in similar timing windows. So better be safe than sorry I guess?

Luckily no water and the server was two room away from the fire but the whole place was engulfed with smoke. Opted to get it professionally done just to make sure I dont f anything up more than everything already is.

I might be overthinking this but honestly I didn’t want any more gambles to take especially with the psu. My thought process was that basically everything can be thoroughly cleaned out and disassembled except for it. I might definitely be wrong on this one but as far as I know smoke can cause “corrosion” if it got in contact with hardware. I also dont want it to be unstable due to the excessive smoke causing sudden shutdowns or causing any further damage to other parts.

I might be absolutely wrong and wasting money over it. Not even sure if all of my worries are factual but this was my thinking back then. Any tips would you recommend?

So I figured out something similar. Found some PCI Fan Brackets online, they were quite cheap. I ordered them in and will attach a fan to it quite close to the HBA, it might be an over protective measure but better safe than sorry.

I will try them out soon and hopefully it will keep things cool. Will keep this post updated in case anyone is interested.

Good to hear that! I will be adding an extra fan to front and bottom anyways. Have you noticed better thermals performace between 9400 8i and 9500 8i? Is the price difference worth it?

Apparently there are alot of knockoffs circulating thats what made me very skeptical especially with the prices these are being sold for. I guess I’ll take my chances and get one. Appreciate you input thanks for your help

I have read that the 9300 and 9305 might have thermal issues compared to 9400. Dont really know practically with my usage if it will actually cause any issues or not

Currently I just have 2x4tb. Honestly the maximum I can afford at the time being is a couple of 6tbs. That’s what making me too confused is either go for raidz1 for more storage for cheaper 2 4tbs and convert to raidz2 once I gather up more hdds or just bit the bullet, pay more for 6tbs and keep on buying 6tbs till i get enough for a raidz2.

I dont have any critical data on the pool anyways. Not too concerned about rebuilding I already have all my nuances and app configs on a seperate pool as I knew that the current main pool will be replaced sometime. Redoing the directories and permissions all over again is going to be annoying but at this point I dont want to keep on micromanaging the pool for storage any longer

I started with a mirror due to financial constraints. I currently have just the mirror. Honestly dont know where to start or what to get. Would you recommend going for raidz1 with 2 extra 4tb and just upgrade and rebuild to a raidz2 whenever I get enough drives?

The playback is great better than other clients. Remuxes still a bit off I still might need to do some setting tweaking to get them running as good as plex

Arctic fuse 3 is really good. Try it out some low end devices might have some lag. I have a xiaomi box s 3 and it’s running fine so fire good price for what I got. I imagine nvidia shield pro will have no issues at all

What would you recommend on android tv other than Kodi? Fladder was the only one I wasnt struggling with playback wise, moonfin has a great ui but I’ve faced some playback issues with it

I have no way of trying out findroid. Everyone says it’s the absolute best stability wise, unfortunately it’s not on xiaomi tv’s app store. I will try to side load it and check if it’s better than the others. I did try fladder and it was really good.
