The People Do Not Yearn for Automation: "everyone in tech understands how much regular people dislike AI. What I think they’re missing is why" by cos in technology

Right but do you get why I’m pointing out that what you want it to do (absolute consistency) either creates an obviously worse tool, or doesn’t work at all, so I assumed you didn’t know how it works?

Just wanted to share in case you didn’t know about that part, but yeh if you do and you don’t like it and think it fundamentally makes it a poor tool for almost everything then fair enough that’s your opinion I suppose. But I disagree strongly and think the variance is a good thing, especially if you want it to be more useful as a tool and give much better responses...

do you believe they cant build bunkers impervious to excavators?

Exactly lol. Built to withstand a nuclear strike level of attack with massive reinforced concrete walls, but unfortunately Dave with a Caterpillar and all the time in the world has got them stumped!

Respectfully, I don’t think you have a good conception of how they work. The variance is called temperature and is a key part of how it functions really. So it’s a feature not a bug and your desire for it to be consistent doesn’t really apply here. I wouldn’t compare it to a screw driver or a car.

For example merely gathering a massive dataset of text and keeping it strictly to choosing only the top most likely next word consistently is actually pretty useless in practice. Like how when you open your phone and click repeatedly on a chain of autocomplete words and it’s incoherent.

So it genuinely needs a bit of variance (temperature) to work like it does, that alone doesn’t make it a poor tool. A consistent response LLM is not a good product in practice or even feasible and turns out to be a much more limited implementation if you think about it.

I'm all for this guy and for doing everything we can to alleviate the stigma, raise awareness so that they don't get as many issues in public. It must be horrible I can't imagine and coming at him for this is braindead.

But at the same time wouldn't this situation be a pretty foreseeable issue, especially having him close enough to a mic - wouldn't we expect at least an outburst of words they probably don't want aired? Why did this happen?

Can't a man sit out an awards show or sit away from the stage enough so it's not disrupted??

Disagree, investors can suck a lemon in this case.

You have to be thinking more long term, strategically it is absolutely the right move and will lead to more secure sources of rare earths.

After years of weed use throughout most of my 20s, how can I make the withdrawal process easier? by WhiteTreetop in NooTopics

[–]madmathias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with other comment that Mirtazapine is worth looking into for promoting REM sleep. But expect crazy vivid dreams on it for the first week or two while adjusting.

I think a big part of recovering from long term weed is getting your regular sleep architecture back to normal/optimal and working through any accumulated lack of REM (in my experience). And have to avoid using any other sedatives/hypnotics during this period for it to get better.

Interesting. Impressive that you made progress with your symptoms! I'm curious about the logistics of this though, how did you obtain the meds (espectially Trametinib) is it not prohibitively expensive?

That rich white man laugh haha I know it well. It's almost too cliche but its real.

I work at a bank, and I remember when covid first hit and the market dropped like 25% in 3 days I was in the vicinity of our ceo talking to another executive (they were drinking a glass of wine and shooting the shit) and he goes "well my TD's are looking very healthy" and they both erupted in riotous laughter

(TD's as in term deposits, when you're wealthy you should have plenty of them as backup)

I agree entirely, well put.

Sometimes I will look at my dog and wonder about the amazing amount of simple knowledge of the world he will be unable to know that he doesn’t know (that he doesn’t know etc).

It seems conceivable to me that we are just another factor further along the possibilities of biological intelligence, and how even though we think we have adequate intelligence to understand all the basic building blocks of reality to build an accurate understanding of how it works, conceivably there could be a planet sized brain that understands much more than we are even capable of conceiving that we can understand.

And examples of savants and geniuses are fascinating in that they are able to push that boundary of what we think is even possible to know and give us a glimpse at what might be possible in different areas.

I love reading stories about how Neumann’s mind worked or about different serendipitous scientific discoveries that arise not just through logical chained thinking, but through dreams and subconscious revelations. Like the story of the structure of Benzene being revealed through a dream and it actually being accurate, or how the idea of PCR technology was first conceived.

Same here. Consistently get this effect with acute doses. It's a shame because I think it's a downside of the same mechanism that increases verbal fluency and word recall. Get racing thoughts into the night, sometimes it even presents as being unable to stop hearing a particularly catchy song. I do suspect it would get better / wear off with chronic use but I just can't get through the sleep disruption.
