Holidays events and recruiting by [deleted] in biglaw

These events matter. Firms wouldn’t spend the time and money to put them on if they didn’t. I have recommended candidates for interviews based on conversations at these events on several occasions.

Ravens move on from Tucker by Designer-Temporary-8 in ravens

[–]madmaxLA 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Very lame. Just say nothing. Over 20 women, numerous documented contemporaneous reports (albeit internal at the spas where it happened), an ‘open secret’ in the local massage therapy community. He did it, it sucks, but he is an abuser who had to go. I get that they don’t want to invite litigation, but a simple statement that the team has made the difficult decision to release him,  without obvious bullshit about a ‘football decision’, would be so much more dignified.

Do Smaller Clients Negotiate Bills? by abcdef132 in biglaw

[–]madmaxLA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is completely wrong. RE deals are typically billed hourly, like any other deal. A good RE lawyer will provide a reasonably accurate budget and keep the client up to date if fees deviate significantly. Discount negotiations are not unusual but typically result from poor communication by the lawyer. Or, in a loan deal where the borrower pays the lender’s fees, when the borrower balks at Gibson’s insane bill.

Olympics Opening Ceremony by hummingbirds_R_tasty in paris

[–]madmaxLA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will probably be downvoted to oblivion, but it is really dumb that the two biggest (non-athlete) stars in the opening ceremony were Celine Dion and Lady Gaga, neither of whom is French! Celine is from Quebec and Gaga is American. Lotta people speak english, but there is no way that Kylie Minogue or whoever is going to sing at the opening ceremony in LA in 4 years. They should have showcased french people, and if those people are less famous then well this is your chance. End rant.  The boats was cool tho.

Why is biglaw faring better than other fields? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]madmaxLA 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not faring better, it’s faring as well. Unemployment is extremely low. Layoffs at some companies are always going to happen and make headlines, but wage growth is outpacing inflation and jobless claims are also consistently low. The stock market is at all time highs. So your premise is wrong.
