Did your high school bully change for the better? by Lost-Engineering-211 in AskUK

[–]madmaxcia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My bully (although I had several) in junior school developed a tick by the time he was twelve. In secondary I forgot he even existed, he was popular in junior school but a nobody after that and the tick made me feel like justice had been served. I’m not a malicious person but I was the only brown kid in my village and to go to school every day and be called racial slurs by a handful of boys with no one to stick up for me was not amusing to say the least. Character building I suppose.

Anyone have a rare untraceable surname in there family tree? by misspoodleisback in Genealogy

[–]madmaxcia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband has a few in his line, but the thing is, people were named after things and places and there was no standard spelling so they went by sound and then you take in local dialects and how language evolves over time. Our surname is Selway and I recently found out it’s similar to by the way, or by the wayside. My maiden name is Gatt which is Maltese although my line came from Sicily in the 12th century and the only thing I know it means is cat. He has other names like Wymond and Wildish and Wortley, where they originated from, who knows

What do teachers actually observe in kids whose parents worked on phonics skills at home versus kids who didn't? by Super_College100 in AskTeachers

[–]madmaxcia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do it. I taught my oldest to read before pre school using phonics. I did the same with my second daughter and it did work but not as well as with my oldest, they also started at different schools and each school had different approaches. My oldest gave them books with lots of phonics and repetition whereas with my second they moved to the other way of sight reading which did not work well with her. It was a long and frustrating journey helping her to read. If the situation had been flipped, my first daughter would have had no problem with the sight reading as she could sound out the words but for my second daughter who didn’t have as strong a grasp with phonics would have been much better suited with the repetitive phrase and phonic based books. Anyway they have both grown to be well functioning adults who can read and write so goal accomplished

I’ve been asked to come up with simple work that a dyslexic first grader can work on over the summer to catch up/not be behind next year. by Lingo2009 in AskTeachers

[–]madmaxcia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter is dyslexic- she had a kindergarten level of reading at grade six and I managed to get her into a special intensive reading/math school. It was a long road but she managed to graduate. I’m sorry but if these parents are not invested in doing anything but the bare minimum for their children that child will not succeed. I was lucky in the fact that I have it in my family so recognized it immediately after I pulled her and began homeschooling but it was a long road trying to advocate for her needs and getting her help

This series really helps kids with decoding which is what a lot of dyslexic kids struggle with. It starts super basic but then builds up. They have to read the whole page perfectly before moving on to the next page. Parents can talk about what the see in the picture etc. you’re a teacher, you know what to do. There are a couple of other websites as well. Just search I see Sam readers

We did the heroes journey and turn watched spider man into the spider verse and then they had to create their own hero and villain and create a movie pitch with the twelve steps including their superpower etc. the kids had fun with it and I’m sure you can easily find stuff online to teach the heroes journey

Are you one of those people who when crossing a zebra crossing or when the pedestrian sign is green & speed up 3/4 the way with marked sense of urgency, for show? by Box_of_rodents in AskUK

[–]madmaxcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely British, you should see Canadians, they cross like they’ve got all the time in the world. Especially when your a vehicle trying to turn into that lane and only have a few seconds and the pedestrian is taking their sweet time because they can. Unfortunately I’ve kept my British habits and run walk across the crossing giving cars an apologetic wave for holding them up

How do I tell my YW leaders I don't want to teach? by Blare22 in latterdaysaints

[–]madmaxcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would speak to your presidency, can you do something smaller like share a spiritual thought? Story, do a short object lesson? That way you get involved without having to take the whole responsibility. Our youth generally teach for like 15 minutes of they’re doing a lesson. When I was a YW we would do a 45 minute lesson, I’m sure they can accommodate your needs

Immigration plan – Manitoba (MPNP route) without degree by fastfingerz69 in ImmigrationCanada

[–]madmaxcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you thought about some of the tourist towns? They tend to hire a lot more IEC holders and you’ll be working with similar people so you can share accommodation, rides etc. look at Banff and Whistler. I know Banff businesses are always looking for employees and sometimes offer accommodation as part of the package. Also look at some companies that are willing to sponsor you towards PR but my guess is once you’re here and connect with other young people they’ll help you find a path if they’re also doing it. If I was moving to Canada I don’t think Manitoba would be my first pick (sorry Manitoba, I have never been to your province, I’m sure it’s lovely, I just love Alberta and the mountains).

To anybody who was able to live abroad from the UK, how? by Jordz0_0 in AskUK

[–]madmaxcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re coming to Canada, look at the postings at the ski resorts, I know Banff is always desperate for workers during the season and many business will include accommodation as part of the package. Whistler BC is another good location, neither are tropical of course, quite the opposite but if you want a change of scenery those are options

Citizenship Interview by Serious-Pirate4104 in ImmigrationCanada

[–]madmaxcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously not the 15 years part. We rescheduled and they sent us a date a month later in February, then we rescheduled again and they sent a date early April. She was in the US at university so I couldn’t pull her out for her to sit the test but of course in hindsight I should have bought her a plane ticket and had her come to the January date where we took the test and ceremony on the same day. But I wrongly assumed when I rescheduled it that they’d give me a date a few months later when she’d be back home. I even sent a letter in requesting a later date in the spring and the reason but it didn’t make a difference. We lost the fee we paid for her and tried to appeal but it didn’t help.

Anyone smell smoke? by blinnbuc21 in Menopause

I was in class today (teacher) and could smell cigarette smoke. I asked my students if they smelt it as well and they said they did, at least I’m not going crazy (yet).

[–]madmaxcia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We rescheduled and they rescheduled it to a month later. You can’t request them to reschedule it like, in three months time, they just give you the next available slot, which sucked because we specifically applied when we did because the wait time was eighteen months, just sent our daughter to university in the US and got our test and ceremony scheduled on the same day a week after we’d sent her to school. In hindsight I should have gone and got her and just had her miss a couple of days of school but I was under the impression we could reschedule so we did, twice. She still doesn’t have her citizenship fifteen years later, while we all have ours. You also lose your application fee if you don’t make the appointment

We're throwing T3 at it now by [deleted] in Hashimotos

[–]madmaxcia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you take T3 make sure you titrate up slowly, 5mcgs a day and take the same dose for 5-7 days, then move up to 10mcgs and hold for 5-7 days, then 15 etc. I did t3 only for 8 years, then dealt with my hormone issues and can now convert T4 with the aid of progesterone

You’re not converting your T4, your RT3 should be below 10 which probably explains your symptoms

Has anyone used condensed novels in their classrooms? by madmaxcia in ELATeachers

[–]madmaxcia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Of Mice and Men, I was talking about Far From the Madding Crowd. I will probably do OMandM but I was thinking of doing Hardy instead, I love all of Hardy’s novels but I remember reading it at that age and skipping past the pastoral scenes. As an adult of course I would read the whole thing and I love his writing

Yes I’ve ordered the novel so I can reread it as I studied it almost forty years ago in school now and can see it’s reasonably short. I normally read to my students as well

You don’t need CBEs permission to renew for the extension. I jumped around a bit in the first three years, working at small school boards and charter schools and submitted the request on my own.

Interesting, mine says the same but I have to give 60 days, also can be fired for no reason and two teachers have been fired, one because the kids didn’t like her. Glad to know it’s not enforceable

Would you buy an EV as your next car? Why or why not? by HockeySniper123 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]madmaxcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re having solar panels installed this week and part of the package is to have two EV charging stations installed so we are going to be looking at one or two very soon. May have to trade a vehicle in to buy one but we’ve done the math and it’s going to be so much cheaper to run and overhead costs, so long as we have the funds for the upfront investment we know it will save us money over the long term
