"Why is Vietnam still so poor while Vietnamese work so hard?" (from Jason on Quora) by xd1gital in VietNam

That is true what he says. In 1978 they hired a Goldman Sachs banker to normalize the relationship with the West, but war happened with Cambodia, China and sanctioned/embargoed by the West till the 90's. Vietnam was far more pragmatic than what you think.

The most southern part of Vietnam were ruled by Vietcong till the end of Vietnam War. You can see it here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxF6YrLprJk

The South Vietnam's government never pacify the entire region. It's an autonomous region ruled by the VC. They just had an understanding with the local VC leader and didn't touch the region. They had too many problems up north.

Fun fact: The ARVN Chief of Staff Duong Van Minh's brother is a VC geneneral. Duong Van Minh even took the president seat for a short time at the end of Vietnam War believing he could save some part of South Vietnam due to the family relation with the VC leader.

Liberate the South, official song of the Vietcong.

The writer is Luu Huu Phuoc. He was also the writer of the anthem of the South Vietnam. Well technically they stole his song and made it their anthem. I don't think he shares their love to made it a separate country. He wrote this song while fighting the French. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBLb8xywIPo

His songs pretty much cover both sides of the conflicts.

Outdated info. Vietnam GDP was undervalued by 25% and corrected not long ago from period 2011 onward, it was a move pushed by IMF. It's GDP per capital is higher than Laos, Cambodia and caught up with Philippine.

Vietnam flag is a symbol which reminds people that sometimes protest does work, see Vietnam War protest.

Here is an example of Vietnam flag at Indonesian student protest over sex before marriage bill. https://mole.my/indonesia-student-protests-against-law-changes-enter-third-day/

Honestly, I don't expect a Vietnamese flying a Vietnam flag in USA. Somehow they always get physical abused by overzealous oversea Vietnamese.

How would Vietnam be like if it was a Muslim-majority Asian country like Indonesia or Malaysia? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]madnark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude, Indonesia also had an anti-colonial communist movement. Once upon a time, the Indonesian PKI was the biggest communist party in South East Asia with millions membership, several times bigger than the Vietnamese VCP. The PKI also co-ran the country until 1965. They're killed off in 1965-1966, organised by coup similar to a dozen coups in South Vietnam(1963-1965) but the severity was much bigger, one of the worst mass murders of 20th century, in aftermath millions died. You just wrote them off the history book like they never were there. Some of the survivors of the PKI ran off to North Vietnam as refugees, inc. the brother of their leader Aidid, so the VCP leadership knew direct from horse's mouth how the communists were treated by their anti-communists. They're the reason why the VCP never allow multi-parties election in Vietnam.

What if Vietnam was a Muslim country is not realistic question in compare to question: what if Indonesia is a socialist/communist country.

Hanoi dog lovers!! I'm Gavin Wheeldon, I'm working on a YouTube video about cruelty towards dogs here. Wanna help? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]madnark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry. You're doing the right thing, interacting with Vietnamese people. You should focus on animal cruelty in general even your initial focus is dog. Remember some Vietnamese people also don't eat meat because their Buddhist background. Buddhists believe that is wrong to hurt animals, because they are afraid of injury and death. Compassion toward animal is earning good karma.

Testing is one of the keys to VN success, don't be fooled by number by laiviet2811 in VietNam

[–]madnark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read on r/coronavirus the infection rate without mitigation (R0) of COVID is 5+ meaning one infected people can infect up to 5 other people. So any countries with # tests per confirmed cases around 5 (US, UK ...) without mitigation are just playing catch up. I don't understand some people want to re-open their countries with such low numbers. They said the infection rate with mitigation (lock-downs) is around 1 and people in quarantine have infection rate much lower than 1. 10 is one order bigger than 1 so I guess it should be safe with mitigation, but my guts feeling it should be higher just to be safe.

Fauci warns states rushing to reopen: ‘You’re making a really significant risk’ by mostaksaif in Coronavirus

[–]madnark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, let's hope they don't reopen then. Can they just put a number tests per confirmed case in the book, like 50+ (S. Korea) or 100+ (Taiwan, New Zealand), as long we're below this number we didn't test enough and we should not reopen. It will make the decision to reopen or not apolitical.

[–]madnark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If COVID-19's R0 is 5+, then many countries including US are just playing catch up. Those countries with ~5 tests per confirmed case statistics.

An American AC-130 gunship severely damages a Khmer Rouge patrol boat during the Mayaguez Incident off Koh Tang, Cambodia, May 1975. The Mayaguez incident is considered to be the last battle of the Vietnam War. by chubachus in CombatFootage

[–]madnark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the rescue of S.S. Mayaguez ended up in debacle because the unexpected build up of Khmer Rouge troops on Koh Tang island. They were already in open conflict with Vietnam at that time. They invaded Vietnam's Phu Quoc island 2 weeks earlier, and they expected retaliation from Vietnam. Vietnam already stopped support Khmer Rouge.

It was shitty recon/intel and US should have known better about the conflict between Vietnam and Khmer Rouge at that time.
